Vale da Pedra (which translates as the ‘stone valley’) is a small neighbourhood of Albufeira – a region which is known as the ‘Gateway to the Algarve’. A decent number of self-catering accommodation options can be found in Vale de Pedra, including spacious villas and modern apartments, giving you close and easy access to the beaches and the attractions of this popular city.
A holiday villa in Vale de Pedra will give you a great base from which to visit Albufeira. The city is one of the leading tourist resorts in the region, especially during summer months, when the population swells with sun-seekers. A primary reason for this is the presence of over 20 beaches, which range from busy tourist spots to secluded sandy coves.
As the sun starts to set it is the bars and restaurants that start to fill up, with Albufeira providing a vibrant nightlife. The busiest bars are in an area known as ‘The Strip’, and often stay open until the early hours of the morning. If you fancy something a little bit more relaxed you should head to the old part of town, where you can enjoy a glass of local wine and a plate of the local speciality – steamed shellfish.
There are also more cultural attractions to be enjoyed, as Albufeira manages to successfully combine modern facilities with its well-preserved Old Town. This part of the city houses whitewashed buildings on its cobbled streets, and gives a real insight into what local life was like over 200 years ago. Albufeira Castle and the 17th century church are two must-see’s in this end of the city.
Whilst staying in Vale de Pedra it makes sense to take a trip out of Albufeira and explore this rich and varied region. Places to visit will depend on your interests, but two popular suggestions are the village of Guia (6km) – which has an astounding number of top quality restaurants for a settlement so small, and Lagoa (28km) – which has historical attractions and some excellent beaches.
The proximity of the Mediterranean Sea influences the local climate, with summers generally warm and dry, and winters extremely mild. This means that virtually any month is a good month for a holiday in Vale da Pedra, with over 3,000 hours of sunshine to be enjoyed every year.
The vast majority of visitors to Vale da Pedra get there via Faro Airport (FAO). A quick internet search will reveal a huge number of flights from this destination, from virtually every UK airport. Book early to get the best deals.
