Perugia is the capital of the Umbria region, and the town of Tavernelle is a mere 26km from this popular destination. As a result Tavernelle provides visitors with an enviable base – close to the attractions of the famous artistic city, yet far enough out into the countryside to provide a truly rural feel to any family holiday. Tavernelle is situated 300 metres above sea level, on a hill top overlooking this green and unspoilt paradise.
Tavernelle has a pleasing array of cafes, restaurants, bars and shops, with more to be found in the neighbouring towns and villages. The village has a number of well-preserved old buildings, including several castles and there is also a small Monday morning market, so there is more than enough in the village centre to fill at least a couple of days of your holiday.
Relaxing walks are the order of the day in this part of the country, and will allow you to take in some fantastic scenery along the way. There can be few activities as relaxing as exploring the undulating Umbrian countryside; stopping to pick at fruit, chat to farmers and enjoy the views as you go. The hilltop position of Tavernelle means that it is a great viewpoint, and on a clear day you can see many of the old castles, olive groves and small villages that characterise the local region.
With the holiday rental accommodation in Tavernelle being of such a high standard, many visitors choose simply to relax in its confines for the majority of their stay, allowing the stresses and strains of everyday life to disappear as they sit back with a glass of local wine and listen to the sounds of nature.
At least a day or two of your vacation should be spent exploring some of the cities, towns and villages that make up the Perugia area of Umbria. Perugia itself is just 26km away, and a city where artists go to learn their trade and visitors go to enjoy their creations. July is a great time to visit Perugia as it is when the annual Umbria Jazz Festival is in full swing. Also worth a look is Panicale, which is the main commune in the area and is just a ten minute drive away.
The weather in Tavernelle is wonderful and warm throughout most of the year, with the period between May and September the most popular time to visit. July and August are the hottest months with daily average temperatures of 29C, whilst January and February are the coldest (but also some of the driest) months of the year.
Tavernelle is just 38km from San Egidio Airport (PEG), which is also known as Perugia Airport due to its close proximity to the city. Ryanair offer the only direct services here from the UK, however, and an alternative is to fly to Florence Airport (FLR) – though this will add around an hour extra on to your journey time upon arrival.
