Situated off of the east coast of Tanzania is the beautiful island of Zanzibar. Made up of several small islands, a Zanzibar holiday will give you lasting memories of adventure, culture and natural beauty. No matter what kind of getaway you are looking for, a Zanzibar rental villa will not disappoint. You can spend your days in total seclusion, admiring the beautiful Indian Ocean views on the west coast of the island, or dive head-long into some adrenaline-pumping activities in the north – the choice is entirely up to you!
If you can tear yourself away from your luxurious Zanzibar holiday rental villa, there is a host of activities just waiting to be enjoyed. Zanzibar has some excellent sandy beaches that are perfect for sunbathing. Visitors can also indulge in a spot of snorkelling, water skiing, windsurfing and fishing. Diving is a popular activity in the north and the east of the island as the coral reefs have an amazing array of marine life to be seen including Manta Rays and turtles. On the south coast, visitors can have the memorable experience of swimming with dolphins in the Indian Ocean. Other activities available on Zanzibar include cycling, walking, hiking, tennis and golf.
Not to be missed on your Zanzibar holiday is a visit to the UNESCO Heritage Site, Stone Town. This town is thought to have been occupied for over three centuries and is a magnificent example of an old African coastal trading town. It is also the birthplace of former Queen front man, Freddie Mercury. Visitors will love the winding narrow streets and alleys, home to many shops, houses and bazaars. The architecture of Stone Town is just one reason for visiting; it is possible to see grand 19th century Arab houses with wooden verandas and almost every house in the town has an intricately carved door.
One of the notable attractions of the town includes the Old Fort which was built in 1560 and is the oldest structure in the whole of the town. The fort was used as a defence against the Portuguese and has the remains of an intriguing Portuguese church within the internal walls. Part of the fort has been turned into a cultural centre where visitors can see art and traditional dancing.
Zanzibar has a wonderful climate that makes it an ideal place to have a holiday rental villa. The warmest months of the year are between June and October where daytime temperatures can range from 21°C to 26°C. In coastal areas on the island, visitors will be kept cool by wonderful sea breezes. The wettest months of the year are April and May, which is monsoon season for the island. There is usually 15 inches of rain each month!
Visitors on a Zanzibar holiday will fly into the only airport on the island, Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ) (also sometimes known as Kisauni or Stone Town airport). There are no direct flights from the UK to Zanzibar but several carriers including Precision Air, Kenya Airways, Air Tanzania and JetairFly offer regular, affordable flights. Passengers can depart from several UK airports such as Aberdeen (ABZ), Edinburgh (EDI), Newcastle(NCL), Manchester (MAN) and London Gatwick (LGW).
