The Swabian Jura is actually the name given to the Swabian Alps, in the south of the country of Germany, leading up to the Black Forest. The highest mountain within this range reaches 1,015m and much of this part of Germany is on a plateau which is over 400m above sea level. Given the elevations above sea level here, this produces a micro-climate which makes it a little snowier than other parts of the country. Holidays in Swabian Jura are extremely popular due to the fact that this is such a beautiful part of Germany, surrounded by many interesting and historic towns to visit and plenty of different activities for you to indulge in.
There is one activity that is available to enjoy on your holidays in Swabian Jura that can only be found in a few select locations across the world: fossil hunting. In fact, it is not unusual for people to find fossils on their own land here that can date as far back as the Jurassic Period (we’re talking around 180 million years of age!). There is even a museum devoted to this Palaeontological pastime: Urwelt Museum Hauff. Other activities to enjoy in Swabian Jura include swimming, canoeing and kayaking, nature walking, abseiling, spelunking, golf, mountain biking and fishing.
You will soon discover that there are a number of interesting towns to visit on your holidays in Swabian Jura. Heidenheim is one of the largest towns in this part of Germany and definitely well worth a day of your holiday to have a good look around. There are many museums here that will help you to better understand the history and culture of the area and these include The Roman Baths Museum, The State Museum of Württemberg (which is actually housed in Hellenstein Castle) and The Heidenheim Art Museum. This will be especially pertinent during the winter months when temperatures can actually struggle to get above freezing. Summers are very pleasant indeed, with temperatures regularly hitting the low-twenties degrees Celsius mark or more.
