Nestled in the heart of the Nock Mountains, in the Styria area of Austria, is the charming village of St Georgen. Ideally located for winter activities, St Georgen is situated near Murau and is surrounded by awe-inspiring scenery, striking alpine peaks and beautiful rivers that will leave a lasting impression.
St Georgen skiing facilities make the area popular during the winter months. Within St Georgen is the ski resort of Kreischberg, which has 29km of scenic pistes and slopes including challenging black runs, as well as Europe’s longest half-pipe. The Turracher Höhe ski area is only 30 minutes away and offers skiing until May. Nearby skiing areas that are accessible by bus include Frauenalpe, Grebenzen and Lachtal. Winter activities include skiing, snow boarding, tobogganing, sleigh rides, ice-skating, and Dinopark for children. During romantic getaways to St Georgen you can take a horse and carriage ride through the Mur valley.
The charming village also offers a wide range of things to do in the summer including walks through the peaceful Mur valley, hiking, horse riding or cycling along 300km of mountain trails known as Murradweg, as well as swimming in the “Zwiefeln” glacier lakes. The Mur River is ideal for white water rafting during the summer, and is a great way to enjoy the magnificent scenery that surrounds St Georgen. There is also an 18-hole golf course only 5 minutes away from St Georgen chalets.
The most important festival of the year is the 6-week long Attergau Kultursommer festival that takes place in July and August. The festival features a variety of events such as music and theatre events, recitals, concerts and literary readings. Venues include the beautiful St George Parish Church, the Narzbergergut am Kronberg, and the Vöcklamarkt Parish Church.
From St Georgen self-catering ski chalets you can easily reach towns such as Kufstein, Salzburg and Innsbruck. In Salzburg visitors can tour locations used in “The Sound of Music” film or visit the birthplace of Mozart. About 40km south of Salzburg is Hohenwerfen Castle, which is built high on a hill overlooking the Salzach valley. You can also make a day trip to Werfen, where you can take a guided tour of the Werfen castle and visit the Ice Caves.
The Mur valley is blessed with the highest number of sunny days out of all the Alpine regions in Austria. In summer temperatures can reach 28˚C during July and August. In winter temperatures drop below 0˚C, perfect for the long ski season.
The nearest airport to holiday rental chalets in St Georgen, is the small Graz International airport (GRZ). There is only one scheduled flight route between the UK and Graz, which is a Ryanair flight that departs from London Stansted (STN). The airport is 90km from the village of St Georgen and it is recommended that visitors hire a car and enjoy the scenic journey to their St Georgen chalet. Alternatively, visitors can take a train to the Kaindorf station that is only 2km away from St Georgen.
