Holidaymakers looking for a fantastic scenic destination might like to try Sondrio in Northern Italy. Located in the Lombardy region of the country this beautiful place has many exciting things for visitors to see and do throughout the year. Sondrio is a great location for holidaymakers any time of the year with winter providing good downhill and cross country skiing as well as snowboarding. Holidaymakers will find numerous interesting places to visit in and around Sondrio including historic buildings in Garibaldi Square. Visitors can see the 14th century Masegra Castle with its two towers and large portal. This is also currently home to the museum of the Grisons Domination. The Church of Saints Gervasio and Protasio has a huge bell tower and is well worth visiting. The Palazzo Sassi is another fine part of the city to visit and is home to the History Museum of Valtellina. The Scarpetetti Quarter is the oldest part of Sondrio and is full of old religious buildings and monuments. The area is also well known for its terraced vineyards, which are surrounded by dry walls. Como is approximately two hours away and has many interesting museums. Visitors can also take a day trip to Milan, which is about two and a half hours away and features some magnificent buildings, not to mention plenty of shops.
The temperature in Northern Italy does not get as hot in summer as the south, but average maximums in Lombardy are around 29 degrees centigrade in July and August. Temperatures normally stay in the 20 degree centigrade area between May and September. October is usually the wettest month of the year with an average of 110 mm rainfall.
Milan Bergamo Airport (MXP) is about two miles outside central Bergamo and approximately two and a quarter hour’s drive from Sondrio. Ryanair operate flights here from other Italian cities as well as numerous international airports such as Berlin-Schönefeld (SXF), Brussels-South Charleroi (CRL), Dublin (DUB), Eindhoven (EIN), Liverpool (LPL), London-Gatwick (LGW), London-Stansted (STN) and Madrid (MAD) amongst others.
