Lancaster is a delightful historic city and university town with a wealth of attractions amidst beautiful scenery. Lively shops, theatres, restaurants and bars are clustered around the foot of the hill which is topped by the 11th century Lancaster Castle. Just four miles west is the seaside resort of Morecambe which has the second largest bay in England. It is an important marine site and is known for its potted shrimps, festivals and its long promenade.

Lancaster has plenty of small retail shops in the pretty town centre. Morecambe's main shopping area is around the Central Drive Retail Park and includes two excellent markets – the Festival Market and the Morecambe Sunday Market where plenty of bargains and local crafts can be found.

Morecambe hosts many annual musical events and annual festivals including the Kite Festival, the West End Community Festival, the Morecambe Jazz Festival and the Tutti Frutti 50s Festival. Visitors are welcome to join in the events.

The area is popular for golfing with its fresh sea air and scenic views. One of the most popular events is the Golf Festival which draws golfers from all over the UK to play at the Heysham, Lancaster and Morecambe Golf Clubs.

Places to Visit Near Lancaster and Morecambe Lake District

Lancaster and Morecambe are on the doorstep of the Lake District which offers spectacular lake and mountain scenery. Take a driving tour to see the quaint cottages, old inns, sheep farms and pretty towns with craft shops. The lakes offer peaceful boat trips and the area has miles of marked footpaths through some breathtaking natural scenery.

Cartmel is a pleasant 25 mile (40km) drive from your Lancaster and Morecambe holiday home. It is well known for its horse racing at the local racecourse. The town also has an old Priory and beautiful Holker Hall with its formal gardens and Motor Museum. The local shops sell the traditional local dessert, sticky toffee pudding.

Steam engine fans will love the miniature train nicknamed “La’al Ratty. The miniature Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway was opened in 1875 to transport iron ore from Eskdale to Ravenglass. Now fully restored, visitors can take a 7-mile journey on this miniature railway through some of the most unspoilt Lake District scenery.

Lancaster and Morecambe generally have cool winters with average daily highs around 44°F (7°C). Summers reach 68°F (20°C) in August and may be cloudy with showers. Spring and autumn are the most popular seasons to visit this beautiful scenic area.

Travel to Lancaster and Morecambe

The nearest airport to your holiday home in Lancaster or Morecambe is the Blackpool (BLK) Airport which is about 20 miles (32km) away. The Leeds/Bradford International (LBA) Airport is 50 miles from Lancaster and slightly further from Morecambe.

Lancaster and Morecambe are also very accessible by train from London’s Euston Station or Manchester to Oxenholm (Kendal). You can pick up a hire car from the station, making the journey very pleasant and hassle free.

There is an excellent road network connecting Lancaster and Morecambe with the rest of the UK via the M6 motorway for those who prefer to drive.
