Fantastic views, no information.

4 of 5
Simply stunning views from every window. Ideally situated a stones throw from the market place in Keswick. Outside entrance stairwell not for the unfit or infirm, as it is up 63 steps. Also the bed is virtually on the floor, as it is just a wooden frame 12 inches high, with the mattress recessed within. Not easy to get in and out of if you are not very mobile. Had to collect key from Sweeneys bar 100yds from property, no problem and were show up to the door and checked all heater etc. were working before the gentleman left. Wallpaper was peeling off in a few places and some small holes were in the windowsills, but not a lot that a little simple maintenance could not sort out in a few hours. Do not understand why this has not been done. It looked like there had been a built in oven at one point, as there were oven trays and roasting tins in the utensils draw. This has now been replaced with a microwave oven. Why then have the utensils not been updated? Nearly everything was available apart from a spatula for eggs etc. There was underfloor heating in the bathroom and heating throughout. There were however no instructions for anything in the flat, no welcome pack or leaflets, no books, maps or dvd's. No instructions on what to do with the key at the end of the rental. We 'phoned the owner and it had to be returned to Sweeney's. Plenty of pubs and restaraunts in Keswick to satisfy every food choice. We used The Oddfellows in the Main street for cheap and cheerful meals and also ate in the Packhorse Inn which we found to be excellent with a pleasant atmosphere. We visited the Puzzling Place and it is well worth a visit. We would return to this accommodation again in the future without hesitation. The lack of information may be disconcerting to some, but We would recommend to family and friends, armed with the knowledge we have from visiting the property.

Croft House. Beautiful gardens

4 of 5
My extended family stayed at Croft House Aug 2012. A Tesco delivery arranged for our arrival gave us a good start. We found the house on the whole to be well equipped, even a dog bowl and fishing nets (although couldn't find scissors!). The kitchen was fairly small (2 cooks max!) but was well stocked with plenty of equipment. It didn't have any children's sized plates/cups/cutlery but we'd brought our own anyway. It had a dishwasher, various cleaning items incl dishwasher tablets, washing machine and tumble dryer, range cooker was great once we'd worked out how to use it, and it was good to have 2 fridges (and 1 freezer). There are no towels/hand towels/hand wash/soap/loo roll, so be sure to bring your own. There are dish towels though. The decor is a nice relaxed feel, nothing too new or fussy (sofas a little floppy though!). It is an upside down style house with the kitchen, living room, shower room and 2 bedrooms upstairs and bathroom + 4 bedrooms downstairs. We didn't have the best weather, which was a shame as it meant we couldn't make full use of the gardens....and the gardens were the best bit! A big lawned area with a babbling brook/stream running through it (can get quite fast flowing after heavy rain so watch small children), total privacy provided by lovely old trees, little wooden bridges across the stream that lead to a hidden picnic area and wooded areas behind. Some parts a little treacherous for younger children but older ones (8yrs+) will find it a delight to explore. There's a big patio area too and ample parking. The only thing it missed was a rope swing from the trees and perhaps some outdoor play toys! For us, Croft was the better house of the 2 large ones simply due to the gardens and privacy. The local area was charming and peaceful. We managed to find a little shop at a nearby static caravan park (turn right out of the house then right at the top of the lane). We can recommend the beautiful waterfall at Buttermere and the new cafe that sells lovely tray bakes and milkshakes! There is a lovely walk to be had around Loweswater. Not impressed with Kirkstile Inn food sadly - expensive for such small portions. Ravensglass railway at Eskdale was nice (nearby Boot is pretty and has a nice pub for food - and free parking). Nearby Ennerdale lake was nice to walk around, as was Grasmere and Muncaster Castle gets a big thumbs up too. All in all a lovely week in a lovely house in a lovely area
