If you can get it - take it ...

5 of 5
For us it was the perfect location, the perfect time and perfect 10 days. The place is quiet and you can get to bed with the roaring of the sea in the background. There is a very good restaurant 500m away and you can walk near the ocean to it (and back). A good swimmer which is not afraid about 18 Celsius water temperature can swim with respecting the oceans power. A not so swimmer can drive to a beach a few minutes away. I can write a lot of more lines but as remarked in the title: take it if you can

Best place ever....

Hidden in the banana fields, Sunny House East offers a wonderful Madeiran experience. It is situated a little back from the sea, along a passageway, with a security door onto its own courtyard and three stories - ground floor with very large well-equipped kitchen/dining room, huge shower room and double bedroom - a middle floor with two more bedrooms (one with own balcony) and shower room and top floor with living/utility room (+ washing machine) and a well-positioned balcony, from which you can see the sea as well as the mountains behind. The 'East house' balcony (unlike West house), has a roof over which is handy when weather is either baking hot or drizzly, and also allows some shade from its position. It has a built-in barbecue which works well and a large table for meals outside, plus washing line. The house is meticulously clean, very spacious and comfortable. The huge fridge was very welcome and small freezer. The cooking hob was a fascinating electronic version, plus a microwave and loads of crockery, cutlery & pans. Oddly there is no oven. There was a generous size dining table in the modern, well-designed kitchen. Plenty of hot water, plenty of electric sockets, spare blankets, loads of towels, toilet rolls, and a stash of household items like salt, washing up liquid, oil etc. to get things started. Paul, the landlord, is exceptionally helpful - a mine of information and accessible nearby for other enquiries. This was especially useful for us, as we knew little about Madeira or how to get the best out of our holiday. He was particularly kind, warning us about things like sea spray and small stones on windy days potentially damaging our hire car, advising us to park a little way away, like the locals. There is a delightful sea-front restaurant, called Sol-e-Mar, within easy walking distance, which does wonderful local seafood at good prices, and where the staff speak enough English and are very friendly and welcoming. The far end of the main street houses a couple of bars and a hotel (Hotel Paul do Mar) whose 3 pools + jacuzzi can be used by external people at a modest cost (including drink) which is great as the sea is too rough, generally, and the beach's big stones hard to walk over. Above all, it all felt very safe, even at night. I can only think of one negative - no shop in Paul do Mar. You have to drive to Calheta or Prazeres a few miles away.

Just right!

Blue Lar is a comfortable cottage in a beautiful setting with views to the local windmill from your own pool. If it gets too hot for you there are nice shady spots to chill in. Juan was very welcoming (english is only one of the languages he speaks) and helped us with local information ranging from the best olive oil to where to hire bikes! We hired a car so were able to visit the fascinating walled town of Mertola, Lisbon (just under 3 hours drive) and generally get around the area which is rural and hilly. Portugal is a lovely country and you couldn't do better than stay in Blue Lar or the larger cottage Juan has next door.
