Wonderful rural Italy

5 of 5
We stayed here for a week at the end of August and had a really wonderful holiday. We were a group of seven: a family of 5 (children aged 6, 4 and 1) and two grandparents. The house is beautifully kept and has all the modern comforts you could wish for, lots of clean linen and towels, lovely spacious kitchen with dining table, instant hot water etc. There are 2 bedrooms in the main part of the house, one further bedroom upstairs but only accessed by an outside staircase and the fourth bedroom is part of an 'annex' with its own little kitchen, bathroom and front door. The gardens are stunning; landscaped lawn areas, an olive grove, vegetable garden (which supplied us with tomatoes aubergines beans and peppers), shady areas under trees and plenty of sun loungers, sun umbrellas, outside dining tables and chairs, traditional pizza oven and barbecue. And the whole place looks straight across a deep wooded valley to the dying city. It is completely quiet day and night except for cicada song. The photos do not do the place justice! Although the house is isolated and peaceful it is very easy to reach places of interest. We made two trips to Lake Bolsena, where we sailed, and Orvieto (the caves and underground tunnels there are amazing and even suitable for our 4 year-old). Both are about 25 minutes away. And Bagnoregio is a steep 20-30 minute walk away, where you will find shops, banks, gelateries! We could not recommend this beautiful, rural retreat more.

A real find!

5 of 5
Absolutely perfect for kids - the best villa pool we've swum in (super-clean, kid-friendly steps into the shallow end, mini diving board, plenty of shade/pool furniture) plus an excellent games room for when the sun got too much or the odd shower passed over. Simple but tasteful decor with lots of lovely personal touches made us feel instantly at home. Incredibly peaceful setting but close enough to venture out for the day to some of the amazing towns, villages and restaurants in this region. Received a delightful welcome from Floriana and Maria - thank you! And thanks, too, to Ingrid and Pete for the incredibly thoughtful and accurate directions to the property. Made the journey so much easier! Had thought that having to use only bottled water would be a bit of a pain but we soon got used to it and filling up our empty bottles in the local square proved something of a highlight for the kids! Wouldn't hesitate to recommend Casa Glenister to any family searching for a true slice of Umbrian life, but with some real home comforts thrown in.

Villa set in beautiful garden and countryside

4 of 5
We had the most wonderful time at this large, peaceful villa. With it's gorgeous garden and lovely pool we really relaxed and unwound - just what we wanted! The surrounding countryside is beautiful with very interesting medieval village and nearby towns. The roads are hair-raising in places with the sharpest hairpin bends we have ever seen and it took some time to feel safe & confident when driving. We would not have found the villa or the nearest train station in Orte without the satnav and even then we had some difficulties. We suggest that there should be a file with essential information for non Italian speakers as we found it very difficult to find out things such as where the nearest supermarket was; how to buy train tickets (from the tobacconist!); where to get the train to Rome (Orte); what to do if the electricity cuts out as it did with us twice -once because of a storm; and so on. Maria is very helpful but only speaks Italian and her assistant who speaks a number of languages is very helpful but not always available. As the villa is quite isolated it would be helpful to know information such as the nearest doctor and number; nearest hospital; how to get to the supermarket and so on. Maria has wonderful tomatoes and cooks delicious meals and it is worth treating yourself to one or other. We really enjoyed the pool and swam both day and night, which was lovely. Despite the local dogs barking all night, we felt refreshed and rested and did not want to come home. Thank you Maria (and Florian too).
