memories of fresh eggs, oranges, olive oil & wine

5 of 5
Yianni's cottage is five star in terms of customer service, value for money, simplicity of booking, smooth organisation with car rental provided and waiting for us as we stepped out of the terminal building, clear directions to the house, helpful support and tips from Manolis and warmth, neighbourliness and generosity from Yianni and Katerina. A week after our return I am still missing the Kalimera and 'all OK?' exchange in the morning, the hens providing us with eggs which were sometimes still warm, the fresh oranges grown on Yianni's own land and the best sleeps I have had for twenty years. As mentioned in other reviews the welcome pack includes breakfast basics plus home made wine in a barrel which mysteriously never empties and delicious olive oil and raki, also home made. Cleaning is twice a week. Kolymbari: best Italian cappuccino by the very kind Yannis at Rosemaries which is next to the INKA supermarket in Kolymbari - also great for beer/wine/raki in the evening. Diktina Taverna serves wonderful fish (owned by a fisherman) as well as other Cretan specialities. Mylos nearby on the front is great for aperitifs/coffees first. The INKA is well stocked. The mini market next door also has Cretan specialities (try the Cretan sheep's yoghurt) and a great fresh vegetable section. There is also a well stocked mini market with a good cheese selection between Spilia and Kolymbari. We have visited Greece many times but this was our first visit to Crete and we are so pleased we came to West Crete. The welcome and friendliness has enveloped us. The drama of the snow covered mountains so close to a dramatic coastline is exceptional and a wonderful view from the cottage every morning and evening. In Spilia you can walk up to the church and cave of St John from the house, have a drink at one of the local kafenions or the Spillia Village Hotel or just walk around the village and set a few of the dogs barking. (The local taverna opens in May). Spillia is superbly located for coastal and inland car trips as well as hiking and we enjoyed all of these - too many to fit in this review. We spent three weeks here in April and the smell of the orange blossom especially when the wind was from the south was a delight. The vines were like twigs when we arrived and had developed full leaves by the time we left. Like many visitors before us we will return to Yianni's Cottage, and for longer next time. Great map - Anavasi Topo 100 CHANIA Touring and Hiking map from Stanfords.

What a lovely place to stay

5 of 5
This is the second time we have stayed here. The house is ideally situated for Kalives,Chania and of course Nio Chorio for a meal and drinks. The owners are very friendly and always at the end of a telephone if needed. We have had a great time here and would thoroughly recommend it.Always left on the table on arrival is local olive oil, raki, fruit etc.Just sitting on the terrace overlooking the village and out to sea, what a way to relax.
