Tranquil, well equiped villa for exploring Crete

5 of 5
Arriving at the nicely prepared villa around midnight, the welcome pack truly was a godsend as all the shops were closed on route from the airport. As we travelled from Heraklion airport and hired a minibus from the Almyrida Auto Club vehicle hire, the follow-me service at 35 Euros was invaluable and highly recommended. The villa is very well equiped, especially in the kitchen. The layout of the rooms and external patio areas provide the opportunity to indulge in a personal chill out. The one nuisance during the stay was the Wi-Fi service which failed abysmally. A 20 Euro token activated the dongle and was used by three people just to check emails for around 15 minutes before a later on-line check of the weather forecast. That was the last of it working. Fortunately bars restaurants in the locality offer decent free Wi-Fi. Villa Selene is set in secluded surroundings in the Crete within good walking distance to the village of Gavalochori or downhill to Almeryda. It is an ideal location if you have a vehicle for travelling further afield. Both the maintenance people and John the owner were very helpful throughout the stay and in organising the stay. Minor improvements would be in providing non-slip mats in the bath and shower. We used Selene as a holiday and gathering location for 4 generations (including 2 babies) with people travelling from Scotland, SW England and Thailand and everyone extremely sorry that the holiday finished having thoroughly enjoyed our stays. I would gladly recommend this place to friends. Although it was early season and pool was on the cool side, it was still well appreciated. Early morning showers could be really invigorated if the solar heated water had all been used previously. The large BBQ was spot on and well used during the stay in the evenings. Our favourite local restaurant/tavern had to be Gavalianos Kafenes in Gavalochori. Generally, we loved Crete and the diversity on the island.

'Perfect location for peace and privacy

5 of 5
My wife and I chose this villa primarily because of the location. It is situated between two greek villages, one called Almirida on the coast and the other called Gavalochory a few miles inland. We had stayed at Almirida on two other occasions but found the villas there are a little cramped for outside space and it can be a little unsettling to look over the fence at other people enjoying their pool and barbeque, just a few yards away. With this in mind, we were both delighted to discover VillaAsteria has a very private pool as the nearest other house on the olive grove is several hundred meters away and really cannot be seen at all from where we were staying. (Yes, you can still hear children in the other pool, but it is a long way away and really not a problem at this distance). Walking to either village was never a problem, even for us oldies as we are quite fit and we enjoy walking anyway, but I would recommend a car for people who cannot manage a hill or two especially in the heat of the summer. We would often walk down to Almirida for an evening meal by the beach (typically around 15 euros a head, including wine, which is exceptional value) and then get a taxi back (10 euros between 4 of us). Overall, a most wonderful and relaxing holiday, the best in fact for many years and we are planning to return with our grandchildren in 2015. One final thing to say is that we had excellent service from the local staff who changed the sheets during our stay and made sure the pool was clean.

Location, location, location

5 of 5
We found Amadeus to be in the perfect location for a peaceful holiday within a short walk of tavernas, shops and bars. There is always somewhere to sit in the sun or in the shade whichever you prefer. The views are glorious in every direction. The pool is a nice depth so you can stand up in it if you just want to cool down. The villa is very private - only one neighbouring villa which is positioned to maintain privacy. The only drawback I can find is that you need to remember to take the key with you when sitting by the pool as the only way back in is through the front door; we were always terrified we were going to lock ourselves out! We had a few light bulbs that were not working when we arrived but these were soon replaced by Martin. John was very helpful when making our booking and Andy the pool man was very friendly and chatty. For eating out we could recommend Thalmi and Dimitri's in particular. We had glorious weather apart from a little rain one day and spent the whole week chilling out. We enjoyed shopping in the local shops; you can get almost anything you need there. The baker does particularly scrummy spinach pies. We are hoping to return next year.
