Historical Haven in France

5 of 5
My husband and I plus two friends stayed in this wonderful rental in September for one week. The four of us have rented properties several times together in Europe and decided La Chouette was among the best. Property was accurately represented in description and very clean upon our arrival. Access and lock up were easy transitions. The owners had an extensive amount of information on the area that proved useful. We loved Semur En Auxois. It was a real French village experience that had a good variety of stores and restaurants that filled our needs without the line of tourist buses that have plagued other vacation spots. The combination of the the hilltop towers and church combined with the river that flows near the rental is lovely, and we all have several photos to prove it. The house itself had quality furnishings and combined the old and new with a great deal of taste. The spiral wooden staircase was one of our favorite things about the house, creaks and all. And the stonewall in the kitchen was a WOW. I was a little worried about the street seeming to be so close to the house, but traffic was light and slow going because of the twisty nature of the road. Parking was easy and convenient. It is a hike up to the local boulangerie and patisserie but the walk gave us an excuse to indulge in an extra croissant. (We are all past 60 and had no problem with the climb.) We used the home as our base as we biked the Burgundy Canal, which I would recommend. We rented bikes at three different towns that were all less than 30 minutes away. The canal paths were scenic and not crowded at all in September. We thought the biking was more fun than the barges which we easily passed as they continually had to stop for the numerous locks. In the evening we would rest our legs, drink luscious Burgundy wine and watch one of the CDs that the house has available. I would not hesitate to recommend this special haven to any friend or relative, If you are looking for a taste of France rich in history and beauty, you can't go wrong with La Chouette.
