Idyllic location to press "Pause" on a busy life.

5 of 5
Le Gicq really is about as quiet and free from hustle and bustle as its possible to get in France. It took us 3 days to adjust to the pace of life and slow down to enjoy the peace and tranquillity. In the area theres lots of historic places to visit, and also the fantastic cognac producers (that filled our car for the return). Colin and Ann run a lovely couple of gites. They are not huge, but they are very clean and come with all the cooking stuff you need to be self sufficient for a family of 4 for a week or two. The best thing however is the pool! Colin maintains this with the fevered attention to detail that you would expect from the groundsman at Wembley or Wimbledon! Its literally the cleanest pool I have ever been in and its not overly chlorinated and is heated just right so is perfect for swimming in. Ann keeps a wonderful garden maintained and the smell of flowers while we sat outside and BBQ'd was great. Colin is also a mine of information on what to see and do in the area, most days we could ask him what was on and he would have a selection of markets, seasonal events and suggested destinations to visit. They really are wonderful hosts and if you book with them then you won't be disappointed. There is 3G in the village, next time we would take a 3G dongle as two weeks with no internet was nearly as tough on my wife and I as it was on the kids! Thanks again for creating such a wonderful haven at La Forge in Le Gicq. Conrad and Nishe.

Peaceful simplicity

5 of 5
This lovely and quite roomy cottage offered simple, yet perfectly adequate accomodations combined with the quiet and elegant ambiance of Chez Foucaud's unique setting. Everything was neat, clean, fresh and ready for us upon arrival. The owner went well beyond the usual courtesies to make everything comfortable and easy for us. All that one might need for a holiday stay is available in the surrounding villages, towns and daily rotating markets. Cognac and St Anne d'Angely offer interesting shops and restaurants as well as pleasant walks and sights. And... I'm going to call the quite nearby natural beach areas magnificent for swimming, along the shore walking or simply being in pristine, natural settings. It was a renewing time for us to stay at Chez Foucaud where the passing of days gave us a sense of being at one with both ourselves and our surroundings. We're returning this year, because everything about it was truly pleasant.

Great Escape

5 of 5
We spent the last 2 weeks of May here. It was sheer bliss in this lovely quiet but vibrant part of France. We found the cottage clean and fresh, beautifully furnished & well equipped---in fact exactly as it is described. We found the area a great place for exploring whether it be cycling around the various villages or taking a day out in the car. Our holiday began on a high note by visiting a wine festival at Beauvais sur Matha where we bought some very good wine to take back (Thank you Derek for the info) We loved the town of St. Savinien which we visited during a drive around the coast & the marais salents. We went from Saintes to Marennes & back through Tremblade & Saujon. Matha is within walking distance (20-30mins) You can be sure of a good lunch at the bar Le National but unfortunately it isn't open at night but Pinocchio is where you will find value for money. There are at least 3 lakes in the surrounding area, one is exclusively a fishing lake. The one on the Mons road out of Thors was a favourite of my husbands----day permits can be bought at the bakery in Thors where the cakes are good!!! It goes without saying that Derek & Lynn are excellent hosts who have a wealth of knowledge of the area & are always willing to help.
