Heavenly!

5 of 5
In keeping with its celestial name, this place is heavenly - we have just had 11 wonderful days there and loved every minute of it. The villa sits on a hillside overlooking the town of Callas. It is well equipped, very comfortable and offers wonderful indoor-outdoor flow. It is clean and well maintained by Gill, the lovely caretaker. Eating under the mulberry arbour was delightful and late afternoon drinks on the sunny patio became a daily ritual. Being Antipodeans, we made use of the BBQ, purchasing our produce from the local markets- we particularly liked the market in Fayence. The pool is superb - salt-water and heated - it simply entices you to relax, and you can't resist. The village is delightful with a lively and colourful Saturday market. We frequented the friendly local cafe daily for coffee, and ate our pastries there, which we bought from the nearby bakery - just a few minutes walk from the villa. We dined at La Grupie in the village and loved both the food and the friendly service. Callas is a perfect base for exploring local villages, the Riviera and the magnificent Gorges du Verdon. We drove the southern side and took an electric boat ride through the Gorges - utterly amazing, plus we enjoyed the towns of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Aups. L'Etoile du Sud is definitely a star. Thanks Debbie!

Highly recommended

Stayed as a couple for one week in July 2013. Really enjoyed and highly recommend it. Particular highlights: - situation: very appealing setting just along the ridge from Callas, in an olive grove but surrounded also by plenty of larger trees; lofty but not vertiginous; very private but not remote; - village of (and the walk to) Callas: definitely underrated; has everything you need; the 10-minute walk to the boulangerie each morning, along the track and through the woods past the old medieval springs/washing place, was a truly memorable pleasure; La Grupie good for dinner (if you can be tempted not to cook for yourselves in the outdoor kitchen); - outdoor kitchen: beautiful views over the pool and across the pool to Callas - the sort of view you get back and find you took a photo of 20 times over; had an outdoor kitchen in a Majorcan villa last year and wouldn't now rent a place without - local produce excellent (esp. the village rose (Bastide du Plan) and goat's cheeses, olive oil, jambons persilles etc.) gave a real sense of being there; - pool: not huge but very nice and in good condition; the terrace it sits on is a very nice place to be, sheltered and lightly shaded by trees but with views; not one of those barren, sweltering hot pool terraces; - villa itself – much bigger inside than it looks in the photos; reasonably basic downstairs but has a kind of rustic charm of its era and everything you need, plus in summer you probably won't spend much time inside anyway; the two main upstairs bedrooms are bright and airy and have lovely views; - the location: easy drive to Bargemon and beyond to Grand Canyon du Verdon; south only a short drive to Draguignan and the coast/St Maxime beyond - the families of wild boar that occasionally pass through the garden in the evening! They were utterly endearing. All in all, a great stay. We would go back.

amazing villa

5 of 5
Les Rays truly is a beautiful villa in a stunning location. Inside there are large spacious rooms, which are all furnished to a high standard. The property was lovely and clean and well maintained. My husband and I stayed with my daughter and boyfriend, we had the lovely bedroom on the first floor which had a verandah with the most stunning view. I found it difficult to drag myself away from here each morning whilst enjoying my breakfast overlooking the village and church. My daughter had the double on the ground floor which was just as lovely with double doors opening out onto patio area. The villa was large enough for us all to have our own space and privacy. Outside the pool area was stunning, more glorious views. Plenty of sun beds for everyone, a very well equipped area and great pool! I also found it difficult to drag myself away from here, but glad I did,as the area is so beautiful. A must is the Gorge du Verdon, the many hill top villages, and a visit to the fabulous beaches. After a days sightseeing it was great to come back for a swim before going out to dinner. We did'nt travel far in the evenings as we really enjoyed the hotel in the village. The food was excellent, well presented and good service. Italian was also good. We also enjoyed shopping locally for produce, cooking for ourselves and then relaxing in the garden at Les Rays, followed by a game of boules, what could be better especially after a few glasses of wine!. I would recommend a stay at Les Rays, and am looking forward to our return.
