Portmore is a coastal city in south Jamaica, an island known for its tropical beauty and reggae music. The suburbs of Portmore stretch across the plains to the west of Kingston, the island's capital and are linked by a causeway toll road. At the end of the causeway there are huge neon signs and the banks, shops and shopping mall which serve the area. The breeze-blown harbour and Port Henderson beach are the main focal points of Portmore, with Fort Augusta overlooking one end of the sandy strip. Portmore hosts the annual Caribbean Heritagefest each year in mid-October.
Portmore has a choice of beaches nearby, including the black sands of Hellshire Beach, Gunboat Beach and Fort Clarence. You can also visit Treasure Beach and Calabash Bay which are often less crowded than other beaches, however there is a strong undertow making swimming tricky but the crashing waves make this a dramatic place to walk or sunbathe within easy reach of your Portmore holiday rental.
Jamaican cuisine is quite unique to the island and is tasty, spicy and sometimes even hallucinogenic so check carefully before ordering! The local diet is generally very healthy, based on fresh fish and vegetables. Coconuts, chili peppers and breadfruit are widely used . Jamaican jerk chicken is a popular dish with a tangy flavor made from the 30 herbs and spices which make up the dry rub or marinade.
Hunts Bay Lagoon is close to your holiday villa in Portmore and race meets are held here every Wednesday and Saturday at the atmospheric Caymanas Park racetrack. It is a very popular event with locals from Kingston and the surrounding areas.
Close to your Portmore holiday accommodation is the seaside town of Port Henderson which has plenty of local fish restaurants. At the weekends, stage shows and dances are held at La Roose with local DJs and other entertainers.

It is hard to believe that this sleepy fishing village was once said to be the "richest and wickedest city in the world" with its ruthless pirates and buccaneers. It was destroyed in 1692 by an earthquake and then became the base for the British Navy. Visit the museum, the naval base and the tilting Giddy House or enjoy a meal at one of the fish restaurants.
Jamaica's weather is consistent almost all year round with temperatures averaging 30-32°C (86-89°F) every day. The rainy season is from August to October and during the rest of the year the occasional tropical shower may fall in the afternoon.
