Castagneto-Carducci is located in the south of the Livorno province and is a pretty Tuscan town with its historic red-roofed villas running down the hillside to the Mediterranean Sea. It is dominated by the 1000 year-old castle of the della Gherardesca counts and the influential family still live there. The streets are built in concentric rings around the castle and there are a few ruined remains of the defensive walls.
