Georgioupolis is a small village on the north coast of Crete. It has a pretty village square surrounded by small shops and tavernas providing nightly food and entertainment. The village also has two supermarkets, a bakery, pharmacy and a cashpoint machine. Once a small fishing village, it has retained its character with the advent of tourism. The area is a wildlife refuge with a small river, eucalyptus trees and a mountain backdrop. It is surrounded by historic sites, caves, museums and ancient ruins which are what make Crete so fascinating to visit.
There are plenty of boat trips offered from Georgioupolis around the beautiful coast of Crete. Boat tours take visitors up the Almaris river to see the terrapin colonies. Daily snorkeling cruises sail to the nearby island of Thodorou where divers can view the World War 2 crashed German aircraft. Lazaretta Island is also reached by boat and the crystal waters are ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

This ancient site was the centre of Minoan civilisation and was continuously inhabited from 7000 BC. The palace has many legends associated with it and many other buildings have survived from the Roman era. The Villa of Dionysos was built around 67BC and the splendid mosaics of this impressive house can still be seen.
This picturesque inland lake is the only one on the island and is just a couple of miles from your Georgioupolis holiday rental. It is surrounded by mountains and there are many tavernas and cafés along its shores.
These 24 ancient windmills are a landmark on the Lasithi plateau. They are all individually owned and some have been restored by their owners.
