The Greek island of Cyprus is a popular destination for holidaymakers and there are many fantastic places to stay outside the main tourist areas. One such place is the village of Akapnou, which is located in the southern half of this Mediterranean island. Here visitors will find numerous different places to stay including self catering accommodation, villas and apartments.
Akapnou and the surrounding area have some great places to explore and are popular for hiking and horse riding. The village is at the foot of the Troodos Mountains, which is a popular destination for mountain biking and climbing as well as skiing in the winter with 10 ski runs for people of all abilities. There is plenty on offer here for sports enthusiasts with several golf courses and tennis courts in the south of the island including Vikla Golf & Country Club. Lovely sandy beaches for sunbathing and swimming in the Mediterranean Sea can be found by taking a 20 minute drive to the south coast. Various watersports are available in Cyprus including water skiing, paragliding, jet biking, fishing and diving. There are a few places to dine in the area including restaurants, coffee shops and tavernas serving mainly local and Greek cuisine. Visitors will find shops here too selling souvenirs including local arts and crafts. Self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and drink here but there is a greater choice of shops at larger places such as Limassol.
Akapnou and the surrounding villages have some charming old buildings. In Akapnou there is a lovely little church for example. Other notable places of interest just a short drive away are the 15th century Kolossi Castle and several other churches in the region. The island has many interesting towns and buildings to visit including the ancient Curium in the Limassol area. The Stone Age settlements at Choirokitia are also well worth a visit. The city of Limassol is not far away and has many interesting sights such a medieval castle and a couple of notable museums.
Cyprus is generally warm throughout the year and very hot in summer. The warmest time of the year to visit Akapnou is generally July and August when the average is approximately 32 degrees centigrade. However temperatures can reach as high as 42 degrees centigrade during the summer months. January is the coolest time of the year with an average of 15 degrees centigrade. Rainfall between June and September is rare with the wettest time of year normally around December and January when there can be occasional heavy thunderstorms.
Larnaca International Airport (PFO) is approximately 40 kilometres from Akapnou and has flights to and from various international airports including Amsterdam (AMS), Athens (ATH), Brussels (BRU), Dublin (DUB), Frankfurt (FRA), London-Gatwick (LGW), London-Heathrow (LHW), Manchester (MAN), Moscow-Sheremetyevo (SVO), Paris-Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Rome-Fiumicino (FCO), Vienna (VIE) and Zurich (ZRH) amongst others. Taxis and car rental services are available at the airport.
