Known as the City of the Village of Douglas, this small lakefront community is situated on the east shore of Lake Michigan. It is just south of Saugatuck and about 45 miles southwest of Grand Rapids. Once a lumber mill town, it is now a centre for fruit growing and tourism.
Although Douglas is a small town, there is always plenty to see and do. Rent a canoe and take to the water, go fishing or charter a sail boat. The lake has trips on an old-fashioned sternwheeler as well as pleasure trips and dinner cruises. Tours of the area on the amphibious “Duck” craft, developed during WW2, give a taste of the town’s sights before plunging into the water. Douglas is on the “Art Coast of Michigan” and is one of America’s top arts destinations. As well as having many art galleries in the area, there are many art-based activities and events throughout the year at the Saugatuck Centre for the Arts. Photographers and artists will enjoy capturing the area’s towering dunes, pristine beaches and lakeside setting. The area is also popular for walking or cycling around the small towns in the area. There are three championship golf courses around Douglas holiday rentals for keen golfers to enjoy. In the evening, book seats for a performance at one of the local theatres such as Mason Street Warehouse or the Red Barn Playhouse Community Theatre.
Douglas is home to the SS Keewatin, an old steamship which is now an interesting floating museum. The historical buildings around Douglas can be discovered on a self-guided tour. Nearby is Oval Beach, ranked one of the top beaches in the world by Conde Nast and National Geographic Traveler so it is definitely worth a visit from your Douglas holiday home. Stroll along the boardwalk and window-shop in the dockside shops at Saugatuck, picnic at Wicks Park overlooking the harbour or take a trip on the Victorian hand-cranked ferry.
Holiday rentals in Douglas experience hot summers and very cold winters. In July and August temperatures average 29°C (84°F) and they drop to well below freezing in January with deep snow from November to March. The area has precipitation and showers throughout the year.
