San Michele Salentino is a commune in the Brindisi Province, near the south-east coast of Italy. The town offers visitors the best of both worlds – a rural setting in a tranquil location, but within easy reach of the sandy coastline and tourist attractions of Brindisi. Consider renting a traditional stone trullo in San Michele Salentino for your next vacation, and enjoying some of the many culinary delights this destination has to offer.
This part of Italy is one of the best places in the world to enjoy a self-catering holiday, due to the wide range of local produce you can enjoy. Olive and grape growing are staples of the San Michele Salentino area, and the town has a number of butchers, bakers, fishmongers, grocers, wine shops and a weekly market, where you can purchase freshly baked breads, locally-caught seafood, delicious wines, cheeses, fruits and much more, to take back and cook with in your accommodation.
Nightlife in the town is enjoyable and laid-back. There are a number of bars, restaurants and cafes in the piazza, and open air entertainment is held on a regular basis.
The Torre Guaceto National Marine Reserve is just a short drive away, and is home to seven kilometres of coastline, with a number of bays of crystal-clear waters, and dozens of small, unspoilt beaches. Here you can try your hand at a number of activities, including sailing, horse riding, biking, snorkelling and wind-surfing.
The use of a hire car is a near-necessity when staying in San Michele Salentino, as the various towns, villages and tourist attractions are well spread out and the area is rural, with limited public transport. The neighbouring villages are Ceglie Messapica (12km) and San Vito de Normanni (7km), and both are well worth a day trip. 30km towards the coast lies Brindisi, which is a renowned wine producing area and capital of the province. Here you can tour a vineyard, sample the local olives and almonds, and visit a number of Roman ruins.
The climate in San Michele Salentino is hot and dry for most of the year. July and August are the busiest months in terms of tourists and the temperature regularly reaches above 30C during this period. Even winter temperatures are often above 15C, and with low rainfall throughout the year, a self-catering break can be enjoyed at any time.
Brindisi Airport (BDS) is conveniently located just 26km from the holiday rental accommodation of the San Michele Salentino area, and Ryanair offers a direct service from London Stansted (STN). As previously stated, renting a vehicle is strongly recommended for the duration of your stay, and there are several firms to choose from in Brindisi Airport.
