Saas Fee is a magnificent village in a stunning V shaped valley in Valais, Switzerland. There are no less than 13 Alpine peaks surrounding the village and the glistening Feegletscher glacier is simply the icing on the scenic cake. The ice pavilion which stands on the top of the glacier is a remarkable place to visit from self catering accommodation in Saas Fee, displaying a range of ice sculptures and explanations of the inner workings of glaciers. Saas Fee is a delightful car free village which seems to have changed little, if at all, since its popularity with tourists first started.
The village is filled with little shops and little bars, giving the village a wonderfully exclusive atmosphere. However, people do not rent a Saas Fee apartment or chalet for the shopping! Saas Fee ski holidays are absolutely magnificent, with a range of blue and red pistes snaking from the very top of the Feegletscher right down to the front door of your self catering Saas Fee accommodation. The glacier is available to ski on during the summer, although straying wide of the piste markings can be dangerous as the glacier is fast moving and crevasses are not uncommon away from the marked ski routes. Ski holidays in Saas Fee are best suited to learner and intermediate level skiers, as the pistes are not altogether fearsome, and the off piste potential is stifled by the ever-moving glacier.
Walking holidays thrive from a Saas Fee apartment, in both summer and winter. There are endless trails throughout the mountains, ranging from the leisurely hour long stroll along the plateau on which the chalets and apartments on Saas Fee stand to multi-day hikes into the mountains. Climbing and mountaineering experience may be required for some of the longer hikes, but there is plenty of advice, route maps and guides available from the Saas Fee tourist information office in the centre of the village.
If you would like a day or two away from the slopes during your Saas Fee ski holiday, there is plenty to keep you entertained. The 5km toboggan run is a particular favourite but there are also fantastic ice climbing (the annual world Ice Climbing Championship is held in Saas Fee), indoor swimming pools, tennis courts, steam baths and saunas in the village, as well as paragliding opportunities.
The famous ski resort of Zermatt is located in the next valley over from Saas Fee. It is considered an almost perfect resort for advanced skiers, and if you are hoping for a great night out or a peak at the Matterhorn, the trip over to Zermatt is well worth while.
The climate on a Saas Fee skiing weekend or holiday is of course cold. Temperatures average -2?C in the grip of winter, so packing some warm jumpers is essential if you are staying in a Saas Fee apartment. In summer, the weather is excellent, with temperatures of around 16?C. The sun shine makes the glacier sparkle, adding to the unbelievable beauty of the landscape.
The closest airport to a Saas Fee apartment is Geneva International Airport (GVA) which lies 140 miles to the east. There are frequent trains from Geneva to the towns of Brig or Visp, both of which have hourly busses direct to Saas Fee, so despite its remote and wild location, reaching self catering Saas Fee accommodation is not as hard as it could be!
