Jamaica is one of the world’s most desired holiday destinations, and the picturesque North Coast is where many of the top tourist accommodation and attractions lie. Ideally positioned in the centre of the north coast within touching distance of both Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, Runaway Bay is a town in the Saint Ann Parish which offers plenty for any visitor, with its excellent beaches and activities in the blue of the Caribbean Sea framed to a stunning mountain backdrop.
Once a satellite town of nearby Ocho Rios, Runaway Bay is now a popular destination in its own right, with many of the same attractions but less of the crowds of its more famous neighbour. This includes a big white sandy public beach, as well as several private stretches. Ocean View Beach is an example of such a private beach, and offers excellent sunbathing and swimming, as well as showering facilities and bar/snack shops. A small entry fee is charged.
Plenty of bars and restaurants can all be found in and around the area, with the main difference being that Runaway Bay nightlife is more laid-back and less hectic than some of the other nearby resorts, making for a laid-back but fun atmosphere in the evenings. At the other end of the scale, the open-minded may wish to consider the famous Hedonism III nudist resort, an adults-only resort which is built on 10 acres and has a liberal attitude to almost every vice going.
Breezes Championship Golf Course, Bamboo river rafting, catamaran cruises and helicopter tours are just some of the various other options than can be pursued in and arund Runaway Bay.
Discovery Bay is just 7km east of Runaway Bay, and is a popular destination for tourists, due to its many historic sites such as Columbus Park and the Green Grotto Caves. 16km in the opposite direction along the coast, Ocho Rios has busy beaches and many water sports opportunities, including top quality scuba diving. A great range of tourist facilities make Ocho Rios the second most visited destination in the country and a must-see for any holidaymaker.
The fantastic weather is one of the main reasons why Jamaica is such a desirable holiday destination. Year-round hot temperatures peak at well over 30C in July and August, but even January and February can receive temperatures above this mark. The start of the year is the driest period, with rainfall highest in October and November.
Most tourists visiting the north coast of Jamaica head to Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, which is around 40km from Runaway Bay. Thomson Airways offer direct flights from Birmingham, Manchester and London Gatwick, and Virgin Atlantic and British Airways also fly from London Gatwick. Flight time is approximately 10 hours.
