Rodrigues Island is a dependency of Mauritius and remains largely undeveloped. The island is just 12 miles long and has a sheltered lagoon with dozens of islets. Exploring the island gives a general impression of mountainous terrain, being of volcanic origin. The locals are very friendly and welcoming. English is spoken in the main shops and restaurants although Creole is the official language among the 34,000 population. The island is dependent upon fishing, animal rearing and tourism for income and the pace of life is reassuring slow.
Meeting the locals is a highlight of any visit to Rodrigues and a chance to see their simple island lifestyle is an impressive experience. The island is an ideal unspoilt environment for nature lovers with several species of endemic tropical flora and fauna. Bird watching is also a rewarding and popular activity. Hiking around the island is a wonderful way to appreciate the scenic natural beauty along with visits to caves which have amazing stalactites and stalagmites. Four-wheel drive vehicles also offer excursions around the island. The best beaches are in Pointe de Coton and along the southeast coast. With snorkeling and diving to virgin dive sites, game fishing, kite surfing and boat trips, there are plenty of water-based activities around your Rodrigues holiday rental. Rodrigues has a flourishing handicraft business and shopping for a wide variety of hand-crafted souvenirs can be great fun.
Highlights to see on the island of Rodrigues include “La Reine de Rodrigues” which can be seen from one of the viewpoints overlooking the capital, Port Mathurin. This small town is very laid back. Visit the restaurants for octopus curry and pick up some polished coconut wood jewelry, raffia crafts and coral trinkets. The nearby island of Ilu Aux Cocos is a bird sanctuary for “noddies” and “sooty terns” and is an interesting excursion from your Rodrigues villa rental.
As Rodrigues is in the southern hemisphere, the warmest months are November to April when temperatures range from 29-34°C (84-93°F). The winter runs from May to October and has temperatures from 15-29°C (59-84°F).
Flights to Mauritius Airport (MRU) are followed by 90 minute transfer in a small 48-seater ATR Air Mauritius plane across the 550km shallow lagoon to the tiny airport at Plaine Coraile and your holiday rental on Rodrigues Island. By boat, the “Mauritius Pride” takes 24 hours to reach the island from Mauritius.
