Photos and Description of this 6 bedroom holiday home in Grolejac - Le Verger and Cottage
4/6 bedrooms, sleeps 8 - 16 people. Perigord Noir near Sarlat and Dordogne River

Le Verger and its Cottage are charming 18th Century stone houses situated on a hilltop, with beautiful views overlooking its 20 acres of sloping lawns and woodland. The house and cottage have been lovingly restored, whilst retaining all their original features. Its private swimming pool is just a few meters from both houses amongst fruit trees and palms, overlooked by the property's terraces. It is located in one of the most sought after areas of the Dordogne, famous for its numerous castles and prehistoric sites. The stunning scenery, renowned cuisine and wonderful climate have earned the region the reputation of being something of a french paradise, containing some of the most beautiful villages in France. Activities include canoeing on the Dordogne, golf, tennis, wine tasting, horse riding, theme parks and attractions. The main house has 4 bedrooms and sleeps between 8 to 11 people, whilst the Cottage has 2 bedrooms and sleeps 4 to 5 people, and both have fully equipped kitchens.

A WELCOME NOTE FROM LILA & GARETH: We are the proud owners of Le Verger. We bought the property in 2003 and have been renting it successfully ever since, getting great feedback and with many families revisiting. We have been busy making lots of improvements including adding the pool and renovating the Cottage. We have also renovated the house that we now live in, which is down the hill from Le Verger. Since we have moved to France, we personally look after the running of Le Verger and our guests. We really enjoy meeting our guests and love to see people enjoying their holidays here. We are at hand should you need anything or if total seclusion is what you are after, we won't be disturbing you.

Some comments from previous guests:: 'We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday at Le Verger. The property is lovely and in such an idyllic location.' .......'We had a wonderful time. Peaceful, secluded, private and relaxing. Le Verger is a wonderful house.' ........ 'We would like to warmly thank you for our wonderful stay at Le Verger as well as for the bottles of wine which we greatly appreciated.' ........ 'Your property is fabulous, we found exactly what we were looking for; some calm, nature and relaxation.' All these comments and many more can be found in our guest book at Le Verger.

Review of le Verger, Grolejac.

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 04 June 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
3 generations of the family from the age of 5 to 67 spent a fantastic week at Le Verger in May. We were very lucky with the weather which was gorgeous. The house was exactly as advertised and in the most beautiful part of France. It was peaceful and private with the owners on hand if needed.
Excellent walking, cycling and running in the woodland and swimming and sunbathing in the pool made the holiday an active one for all family members.
The house itself was well equipped for 16 people and very comfortable. Every meal was eaten outside on the terrace.
Table tennis table was an extra bonus, providing entertainment for adults in the evening, while barbequing!!
Lovely towns within half an hour drive gave the opportunity to experience some of French life.
All 16 of us rated the holiday 10/10!

What a great place to holiday!

Review Submitted: 23 September 2011 Date of Stay: August 2011
We had two glorious weeks at Le Verger in August 2011. There was 12 of us in the group and the two houses meant we had ample space for everyone. We took full advantage of the super pool and gardens as the weather was fabulous throughout our stay. The house is in a great spot for exploring the area and there is so much to do! We loved our trip to Rocamadour and the Foret de Singe - fabulous for all ages - plus also le Roque de St Christophe - amazing!. Also had many good trips out locally to Domme, Le Roq Gageac and le Jardins de Marqueyssac. The kids enjoyed the swimming, canoeing, horse riding and the climbing near Sarlat. ( A car is fairly essential of course if you want to reach all these places). All in all a very relaxing and enjoyable time for all.

The house was very comfortable if a little hot at night when the temp went up to nearly 40! Lots of fans to use though so we tried to stay cool despite the heat. We spent most of our time at the house outside - great for eating al fresco and for star gazing with plenty of shooting stars - but would have found more sofas were needed in both houses if we had spent time inside.

Thanks to Lila and Gareth for a lovely stay and to Liam and Emily for their occasional visits to see us!

Perfect house to explore the Dordogne region!

Review Submitted: 08 November 2010 Date of Stay: October 2010
We just spent a week at Le Verger, and we really enjoyed it. The house is very charming, very well located to explore all the sights, but at the same time secluded and peaceful... just beautiful. It was also very clean and well equipped.
Although cold to be outside in the mornings (late October, and we were sightseeing during most of the day), my girls loved the garden, hanging laundry in the laundry line, trying to play ping pong! We enjoyed running in the beautiful countryside. Having said this, we were very lucky with the weather, and enjoyed sunshine most of the week.
And I can't name all the amazing places we visited and the yummy food we had throughout the week.
I also think the area is great for every age and activities, there were more adventurous activities we couldn't do with our 3 year old, but there is plenty to do!
I can't recommend it enough!

I loved the house. We went to lots of places, including La Roque St Christophe that was my favorite place. Me and my dad played table-tennis, we loved it. We did a photographic lesson, it was fun. Thank you. From Mia. (aged eight)

Lovely house, especially enjoyed Sarlat market, Beynac village + castle, canoeing/kayaking on the Dordogne, and Monpazier. The pool was very welcoming in the heat, and for a meal out we would especially recommend La Bastide restaurant in Monpazier, or La Rapiere in Sarlat.
Thank you!

A family getaway

3 out of 5
Review Submitted: 25 October 2010 Date of Stay: July 2010
Three generations (grandparents, 3 adult children, 2 in-laws and 8 grandchildren - aged 12 and under) of the same family spent a very happy week at Le Verger in July 2010.

The setting of Le Verger is magnificent. It is a haven of tranquillity within a stone's throw of the hustle and bustle of the major sites of the region. There are trails for mountainbiking or walking on the doorstep. The pool is spacious with lighting for midnight swims and a wonderful view. The garden is big enough to cope will all manner of activities.

The reason for the average rating is that the main house (and most notably the kitchen) is poorly equipt, particularly for a large group. The kitchen is fairly small with little by way of work surface. The hob is difficult to light and the kitchen utensils are aged and of poor quality. More thought could have gone into providing some basic provisions (e.g. a couple of washing tablets or washing up liquid, matches etc.) and more suitable bedding for the climate (i.e. a sheet and blanket rather than heavy duvets).

Luckily for us the weather was good and we were able to prepare most meals on the BBQ; and having spent the week prior camping we had some of the basic necessities (such as a decent sharp knife etc.)

We would recommend this property for its setting. With a trip to Ikea :-)and a small investment on the part of the owners it would get an excellent rating.

Owner's Response: Dear Sarah,
Thank you for your review. We are pleased that you and your whole family had a very happy week and that you found Le Verger and it setting is magnificent. It certainly is a unique and beautiful spot.
You also left some very glowing comments in our house book, which we thank you for.
We are however, disappointed and slightly bemused, with regard to your later comments. Bearing in mind that you, by your own admission, had such a good time at Le Verger, we find your review rather harsh and in particular the low score, especially as Le Verger has never received lower than a 5/5 rating.
We are also disappointed with the fact that none of this was ever mentioned to us at the time. Lila and I welcome our guests very warmly and make it very clear that we are always at hand, day or night, should you have any problems or concerns. The first we knew of these issues, was when we received a notification of your review from Holiday Rentals. I find this disappointing as many of the points you raise are very minor and could have been resolved in an instant.
In answer to your issues raised:
The kitchen of Le Verger is 23m2, and whilst not huge is by no means tiny and is in keeping with a three hundred year old property. Not mentioned on your review however is that the property has two fully equipped kitchens, one in the cottage.
The kitchen hob, even though of very good quality, has become a little temperamental this year and is due to be replaced.
Unfortunately I cannot agree that the kitchen is not poorly equipped. At the beginning of the season we bought many new items for both kitchens, including two new sets of sharp knives.
As for the items such as dishwasher tablets, matches and washing up liquid, though we are not obliged to, we do provide these as a matter of course for all our guests and were definitely supplied at the beginning of your stay. Maybe because you were in the cottage you were not aware of this.
With regard to the duvets, I think this is just a question of personal taste. The duvets provided in the summer are the lightest available and our most of our guests find these very comfortable.
In conclusion, whilst we are glad that you and your families had a wonderful time at Le Verger, we are of course disappointed that you were not happy with certain aspects of your stay and we would have appreciated the opportunity to address any issues you may have had, however minor.
Gareth and Lila Kirkland

September charm

Review Submitted: 09 May 2010 Date of Stay: September 2009
We spent many days by the pool in between trips out to the many local sites and attractions. The log fire was great especially when having dinner in the early evening. The weather was fantastic, much better than we expected and Gareth and Lila were very helpful when we needed them.
