Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday home in Roatan - L'Alizé
5 BR 5.5 Bath home, salt water pool, 1500s/f travertine terrace, water view

Nestled above a private cove beach ( locally called a “keyhole”) on the South shore of the tropical island of Roatan, L’Alizé enjoys both a constant sea breeze and a dramatic view of the Caribbean every day of the year. L’Alizé derives its name from the French word for African trade winds, (alizés) which flow East to West during the warmest months of the year. These dramatic winds account for a such a surprising cooling effect on the hottest days, that it quickly becomes clear why Roatan’s earliest settlements established themselves on the South side of the island where these winds rarely fail to cool and refresh while they keep the bugs in check.

L’Alize was built by one of Roatan’s premier builders in 2008-2009. The building techniques and materials reflect attention to detail and quality construction. Keen usage of space, and maximization of views and sea breezes, remind one that this exquisite home was built to be enjoyed year round by the builder himself.

In 2011 a major renovation added the pool, deck, cottage, two bedrooms and two baths.

In 2014 L'Alize was selected by a leading luxury travel company, Andrew Harper TM, for Homeaway's Luxury Rentals site. Only two of Roatan's vacation rental properties have qualified for this distinctive rating (see luxury.homeaway.com).

L’Alizé, is spaciously laid out to maximize the 3500 sq/ft., with a large master bedroom and master bath complete with double shower. The 3rd floor guest room enjoys a spectacular view with a private deck and spacious bath. The second floor great room completes the open island ambiance with kitchen, living and dining room occupying the entire second level. Grabbing all the attention upon entering this room, the stunning Caribbean ocean view leads the eye through the ample, and comfortably furnished covered deck, overlooking turquoise waters to the mainland of Honduras. An ample half bath is conveniently located on this level.

The first floor addition can be perfectly autonomous with its own kitchen 2 bedrooms, 2 baths and a living area which overlooks an equally stunning view of the pool, patio and the Caribbean.

This first level is ideal for young visitors who can use the living area to enjoy their own media or visit privately with their friends. Young families with small children may prefer this level as well.

The house is rented as a 4 bedroom home but, we offer discounts to parties of 4 or less. The guest cottage can be added to offer more space for larger parties.

Eddie our capable groundskeeper will tend the pool and rake the beach each day and assist you as needed. Olga, his wife, will competently provide daily housekeeping so everyone can relax a little more. A bilingual babysitter is also available.

Guest House: The guesthouse is a separate building located on the North side of the home. This perfect little cottage has a double bed with travertine floors, granite counters and a private bath. It does not have air conditioning but two very effective fans. The guesthouse can be rented additionally for $250/wk. It is not rented alone.

A vehicle is available for our guests' use throughout their stay as available. Please ask for details.

Nestled in a pristine wildlife retreat that exhibits a wide spectrum of eco systems, L’Alize only gets more stunning as you leave the home to explore the iron-shore. From mangroves to volcanic iron-shore and ancient coral, this nature walk is worth the effort. Mangrove canopy tunnels and the pristine keyholes are sure to delight observers as they wind their way on the nature trail leading to Pirates Cove. Of all the features that make this home a sanctuary from the pressures of busy lives, the one that sooths the soul best, is the unspoiled habitat surrounding L’Alize. L’Alize added to its collection of fun things to do, two tandem ocean kayaks. (see picture) Let these Kayaks glide you to sights few eyes have seen as these silent crafts make their way past the uninhabited iron shore.

Whether seeking sanctuary from a pressure filled life or celebrating the beginning of a new life with your special someone, L’Alizé offers adventure or relaxation, luxury and privacy, unspoiled nature and plenty of nearby activities to suit all tastes.

A true getaway. Nestled in dramatic untamed beauty on pristine turquoise shores with abundant wildlife, makes this home a refuge as well as a great place to celebrate family gatherings. Restaurants, and grocery stores are only minutes away.

L'Alizé has all the modern conveniences of home with the feel of an outpost on an uninhabited island. The view from the second floor great room took our breath away the first time and each time we visit. We never get used to the beauty.

From the minute we decided to book L'Alize until we boarded the plane to leave Roatan we were given top notch service. Our pre-trip planning was a breeze and we had tons of help from the owner and manager. Upon arrival we were met at the airport and taken to the local grocery store to stock up on supplies. From the store it was about a 20-minute ride on curvy and pot hole riddled roads to the house.
The drive into L'Alize is STEEP! Thankfully the house came with a van because without one you would be hard pressed to walk out to the road. We were given a tour of the house by Tish (the manager) and introduced to Olga, Edie, and their family (our caretakers, cooks, and concierge).
The house is as described, perhaps even better, and pictures can not show how truly amazing it is. From the second you walk through the door you are preoccupied with the incredible view out every window. We spent a great deal of time on the decks but there were nights we had to eat inside because the breeze could be a bit much. However, waking up in the morning in the master suite is unbelievable! The breeze rolls through the room, the sounds of the ocean are in the distance (along with a rooster), and you can lay in bed and watch the sunrise.
We had a BBQ chicken and Mahi Mahi on the charcoal grill (grab charcoal at the grocery store). We had to be creative with the grill placement because of the breeze but that was easily done. We also made pasta one night and brought in pizza from Bananarama in West Bay (very good). The kitchen is very well stocked and it was easy to cook for our large group (12 total).
There are stairs everywhere at L'Alize and you must conquer a fair amount of them get to the beaches. Both beaches are decent and Edie attempts to keep them clean but a fair deal of trash can wash in each night. The surf was a bit much for snorkeling for most our group but it was possible. The beach in front of the house is next to the caretaker's house but the second beach (a 10 minute walk) is quite secluded. Edie gathered up wood one night and started a beach fire for us, all we had to do was ask.
You are between West Bay and West End and both are easy to reach (we spent the majority of our time between the two). South Shore Zipline is a very short ride from the house (You will pass it daily). We ended up spending $140 for gas but we were constantly on the move.
The guest house was a good add on for us. The pool was perfect. You will NOT be sorry if you stay

A South Shore Hillside Treasure

Rosann, thank you for opening your beautiful L'Alize to guests! We are a family of 7 who rented this hillside home for the week between Christmas and New Year's Day. We enjoyed the privacy and the breath-taking beauty of this property. Imagine waking up to constant ocean breezes then enjoying a cup of coffee on the 3rd story bedroom's deck while a lit cruise ship sails past the private beach...that's L'Alize every morning!

Safety, amenities, and location to activities for children ages 7-22 are a consideration when we vacation as a family. We felt completely safe at L'Alize, as well as, in the areas we drove to on Roatan, although we followed the advice Tish provided upon check-in. The house was stocked with everything we needed to cook our own meals and to live comfortably for the week. We would highly recommend having Olga make her delicious lemon beignets one morning. She also makes a wonderful Honduran breakfast and dinner. Eddie was always available to assist us when we had questions about the van which was included with the house (a huge bonus!). He was also present to start the generator when the power went off...something that just happens on Roatan.

L'Alize is only a short drive to the airport and centrally located to all the activities and attractions we wanted. West Bay and West End have plentiful restaurants, resorts, beach bars (we had to watch the Wisconsin Badgers bowl game), and dive shops. We found that a 40 minute drive to French Harbour was worth it for more upscale shopping. As for activities, Roatan provides world-class diving and snorkeling within 100 feet from the shore. Tish warned us to stay away from the sea urchins in L'Alize's private keyhole. We found them easy to navigate and enjoyed hours of snorkeling right in front of the house...even with our 7-year-old! Our scuba divers recommend the Bananarama Dive Shop in West Bay. They thought the night dive was incredible! Our whole family snorkeled with dolphins at Anthony's Key. We have done a dolphin experience before, but never like this! Another first was the Mayan Jungle Canopy. For $10pp, we turned a rainy Friday into a day filled with interacting with monkeys and macaws--priceless photos!

We will return to L'Alize in the future! We put the Shark Dive, Zip Lining, and dinner at the Roatan Oasis (reservations needed) on our to do list.

By renting L'Alize, we felt immersed into the culture of this beautiful, island paradise! Thanks!

My partner and members my family rented this house for 4 days last week. Great ocean views! Comfortable beds and enough space for a group of 10. I would highly recommend this house for other large groups and families. We took advantage of the car that was available at the house and this came in very handy. Our driving from the airport made a stop at the supermarket before heading out to the house. I would highly recommend the same for groups that are staying for more than 2 days. I would also recommend taking advantage of the housekeeper's cuisine. She cook a breakfast and dinner for us that were excellent. We will definitely rent this house again if we return to Roatan.

2013 Christmas Week Getaway

  • 5 out of 5
  • Review Submitted: 31-Dec-2013
  • Date of Stay: Dec 2013
We rented this house on Roatan for Christmas week as a warm weather getaway. Our group of 8 included 2 families, with adult children so we needed a house with 5 bedrooms. The accomodations were exactly as described, and location was better than we expected with beautiful ocean views, secluded yet close to West Bay beaches and a short drive to West End. The kitchen was well equipped and we used it to prepare meals daily as well as a special holiday meal on Christmas Day. I would recommend bringing bug spray and water shoes if you plan to use the beach, and also flashlights for use during power outages. We lost power 3 times, but none lasted longer than a few hours.
The keyhole was too rough for snorkeling the first few days, but after the wind shifted it became calm enough to explore the shipwreck and coral reef. We enjoyed using the ocean kayaks to padddle over to the rope swing, but none in our group was brave enough to try it. We were able to see all the way down to the bottom when the water was calm. Tish was friendly and helpful and patiently answered our questions about the island, restaurants and tipping practices. An excellent vacation spot!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to give a thoughtful review of L’Alizé.
We are so glad that you found our vacation home to be “an excellent vacation spot”.
The electricity on Roatan is produced by a large generator, which supplies the entire island. Most of the year the electricity works with few significant interruptions, but with winter storms the outages can be as often as what you experienced. The power company is efficient about bringing the power back within a few hours.
Since your stay we have added to L’Alizé a generator that services appliances and lights for two floors very nicely. It is our hope that it will make the pesky power outages less of a bother. Thanks again for staying with us. We hope you can come back soon.

Time of refreshment and relaxation

We are grateful for the time we had staying at L’alize. Very refreshing and relaxing.
L’alize. What a great and ample name for a house perched on a knob on the Caribbean coastline. The house is level with the birds of prey gliding through the mountain rift. This vertical space allows the ocean breeze unhampered access to the large covered veranda on each floor. Despite the brilliance and intensity of the tropical sun no air conditioning is needed and even the terrace pool water remains cool and refreshing because of the the breeze.
Echoes of the water rustling against the reef reach the house. It’s a short distance down the hillside to a private cove. This cove is a great place to snorkel, especially in calmer waters. In addition, L’alize is positioned between West End and West Bay, which are reef-laden primo areas to snorkel. We found the house comfortable and well stocked. The support staff was kind and very helpful. I hope we have another opportunity to stay at L’alize.

Words do not describe this amazing paradise. Home is perfect, location is secluded but close to everything. Hiking, fishing private beaches. There is even a small wreck in your own private keyhole. We will be back. I love the place.

My husband and I are very particular, so when it came to our honeymoon we picked this place because it had room, privacy and beauty. That is exactly what you will get. The island is beautiful, however the vacation was made because of this house and the location. The snorkeling was great right off the key hole. You can hike around, lay on the beach or hang out in the pool. You don't need to bring beach towels and I suggest water shoes for the key holes. Kelly was fabulous. She helped out whenever we needed it. Make sure you stop at the grocery store in Coxan Hole and load up for breakfast and lunches. You are not going to want to leave and there are no full service grocery stores in West Bay or West End. The water at the house is filtered which was great. If I were to come back, I would bring along a smaller soft cooler to take drinks down to the beach more easily. If you get a taxi, ask for Sonja. You will need to rent a car. Unfortunately our car insurance wouldn't cover out of the country so we couldn't rent the van they had at the property but it is easy to rent on the island. She was really sweet. The only negative that we had is the house below has a rooster that tends to crow at 4am and every hour after that. It didn't happen every night but make sure the upstairs patio doors are closed and you will hear him less. I would recommend this house over any of the resorts on the island and to anyone that would be traveling to Roatan. Thank you so much for the memorable honeymoon!

Absolutely lovely house!

A group of us stayed at L'Alize for 10 days. The house is absolutely fantastic, and the pictures are completely accurate. The location is perfect - very close to West Bay Beach but an easy escape from the crowds when necessary. The house is gorgeous and well-appointed and maintained; it had everything we needed to feel at home, including comfortable beds, spacious and well-equipped kitchens and bathrooms, plenty of towels, and A/C in the bedrooms (we didn't even need the A/C with the trade winds coming through - the house is situated perfectly to take advantage of them!). The owner and Kelly (manager) were wonderful - very helpful, very responsive, and very professional. I've rented quite a few properties via VRBO, and I've always had good experiences, but this experience was the best yet in terms of the quality of the property, its location, and the professionalism and helpfulness of the management. Please don't change a thing!

Tips: Instead of Gumbalimba for monkeys, check out Bodden's Monkey Tour between West End and Sandy Bay (I believe the sign says "Maya Canopy Tours.") It's way less expensive (about $8), and you can actually play with the monkeys. They also have two kinkajous. Also, "Cindy's" (if I recall correctly) in West End has an amazing chicken burrito, and Rotisserie Chicken in West End is also a must. JavaVine in West Bay Mall has very good coffee and pastries, and the Hungry Munkey makes great sandwiches. We found snorkeling to the reef in West Bay easiest in front of Infinity Bay - there seems to be a "channel" of sand there that will take you between the sections of the reef to get out to the deeper parts (instead of winding your way between coral outcroppings just off Tabayana near Black Rock). On a calm day, snorkeling in front of the house is pretty cool, too!

We all highly recommend this house. We definitely plan to return!

Beautiful house and location

The house and property were beautiful, exactly as advertised. We had everything we needed and more. Kelly and Luis were very attentive and will offer as much or little assistance, as needed. A car is a definite must, as there is not much within walking distance. One could walk to West Bay if motivated to hike up an extremely steep and long driveway to the main road. Snorkeling between the keyhole beaches was nice but not always possible with rough seas.

We would choose L'Alize again if we return to Roatan.
