Naudoux - a rural retreat

Review Submitted: 01 November 2012 Date of Stay: September 2012
This is a delightful house to stay in, and a really interesting part of rural France, which is great for walks. We visited in September and had mixed weather, but little stopped us enjoying the all weather veranda and the biggest swimming pool we have ever experienced.
If you want a quiet retreat, this is for you. You are surrounded by fields and cows and little else, and the real treat is the beautiful light that streams into the house at sunrise. If you taking a large family and friends, (not that I would want to do that) there is plenty of room to spread out so you are not on top of one another. Having space like this is great.
You are a 45 minute walk away from the nearest large community which is the historic hill top town of Curemonte - if you are an artist you wont want to move from here. The only cafe there was unfortunately closed for holidays, but during the summer I cant think of anything nicer than walking there early evening, enjoying good food and wine, and walking back.
Meyssac is a delightful market town about 15 minutes away, and the boulangerie in the market square sells the best bread for miles. Do go there on market day and have a drink in the sports cafe, and watch the locals shuffle about their business. On the Friday market they have an excellent fish stall.
We did not visit any restaurants, mainly because they could not compete with the delight of sitting on the veranda in the evenings, and because we love to cook.
The house keeper, Fiona, who lives the other side of Curemonte, took good care of us, supplied us with some DVD's, and is a very interesting to talk to.
I would highly recommend this property. i would say that the initial description we read about this house understated its charms.

Naudoux

Just returned from a stay in Naudoux so thought I’d write a review for once as I always find reading other peoples reviews so helpful. Having stayed in numerous French villas over the past 20 odd years i'd say that Naudoux is probably the pick of the bunch (including some much more expensive properties). We were there to relax but also had children, so you always wonder if there will be enough for them to do to keep them occupied – luckily the pool and exploring the garden and surrounding grounds takes care of them and so in fact you don’t really feel the need to leave the property at all. However when we eventually did venture out I was pleased to find that there are lots of other diversions i.e. caves that were truly impressive (huge stalactites) , renting canoes on the river (great fun), reptile park (some pretty unusual creatures), the red village etc, so in short we avoided the ‘dad I’m bored’ syndrome which is key if you want a relaxing break! There were some great French pubs, bars and restaurants some of which have very good food and surprisingly cheap prices and some which are more haute cuisine for a treat but still don’t break the bank, and also lovely views everywhere (the views from the property grounds are spectacular esp. on the balcony having dinner or breakfast) and the rather beautiful house itself which is a classic large old stone French house with a big sitting room with a huge fireplace which would also be great in winter which has already got me thinking about a let over this winter. On a practical note it was very well kitted out with lots of things that had us saying ‘look they’ve got one of these’ ie games and things for the pool etc (none of which is mentioned in the advert but makes a pleasant surprise when you discover them)
All in all this is a big recommendation – great for the kids and great for non-kids, in a stunning house tucked away with well kept grounds, yet on the doorstep there are lots fun things to do and explore. After so many years of French hols this is one of the few places we have vowed to return to! Enough said.

Thank you for sharing your gem

We are just writing to say what a wonderfully special place Naudoux is, and to thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to share in its beauty.

The times we stayed have been most memorable, the views are to die for and sitting by the pool watching the swallows drinking from it on the wing was a pleasure of pleasures.
The house is so comfortable and has so much character we wonder if anyone could ever be anything but enthralled by it .Also the thrill of finding a house in France that has more than one loo is amazing so three is unrivalled. We really love it, the beauty of the “beau village” nearby and the close proximity to Collonges-la-Rouge - the area is packed with exciting places to visit and the bliss on returning to the silence and beauty of Naudoux makes our stay . In fact, we love the house ,garden and views so much we find it difficult to drag ourselves away to do the above mentioned touristy things!

We will return and enjoy its charm again hopefully soon .We would highly recommend this beautiful house and this wonderful part of France to anyone. It suited us perfectly as a couple and was a delight when we took guests. It is a firm favourite of ours. Once again, thank you so very much for sharing your gem.

Home from home

We spent two weeks at Naudoux, doing as little as possible, very slowly. And it was perfect for that. We did make the occasional sortie for market or restaurant, but most of the time we simply relaxed by the pool or on the verandah. The valley is properly agricultural rather than what's now called agritourism, so as country-dwellers in the UK we found the view and the habit of the landscape to be familiar and comfortable. The house is just the same, giving the impression that the family has popped out and left you in sole charge. All the stuff of family life is around you, and it feels as if you've known the place for years.
I'm sure there are loads of things for the more adventurous to find round about, but why leave Naudoux? We didn't.

amazing view over peaceful surroundings

We stayed in the house with our family of five: two adults and three older children .We had a perfect holiday at Naudoux. The house is spacious and well equipped. We loved the beautiful views from the veranda over the hills with cattle. The swimming pool is fantastic with salty water.
It is a great walk from the house to Curemonte, a medieval village in the neighbourhood. Meyssac is a nice little town where we visited an interesting "vide grenier". What really impressed us was the utter quietness of the place. You could actually hear the cows chew!
The very friendly housekeeper visits once a week to renew the linens and take care of the pool. The house was very clean, the grass was cut and the grounds were taken good care off. Contact with the owners was excellent, they even organized a ping pong table at our request. This is the perfect home if you are looking for a peaceful stay, away from the crowds, in this part of France,

Escape to the country

Naudoux is the perfect place to get away from it all. Limousin cattle make great neighbours and birds of prey are beautiful to watch from the terrace. Naudoux is very well maintained and well equipped with full kitchen and washing amenities. Lack of television was a bonus! Charming villages to explore near at hand and Meysac, the nearest town, has a large supermarket, post office and butcher among a good range of shops - so completely caters for daily needs. A very friendly restaurant is located just down the road from the property and there are many other good restaurants in nearby villages. All in all a wonderful place to stay and enjoy.
