About Emma James

I moved from London to LA in 1994 and then to New York in 1995 and I've been here ever since! I lived for 8 years in Greenwich Village in Manhattan and then moved to Brooklyn in 2002.

Emma James purchased this apartment in 2005
Why Emma James chose Brooklyn

We bought the property because it had a garden and there was more space for our family. Once we moved in, we discovered that we live on the friendliest block in Brooklyn!

What makes this apartment unique

We live in the building and so we are on hand every day to help with directions and recommendations.

Great place to stay

This is a fab apartment in a great part of Brooklyn. the bedrooms were both light and airy, and the living room and kitchen were comfortable and relaxing. The place was clean and tidy and well-decorated. The owner, Emma, was welcoming, helpful and easy to get on with, she made some great suggestions for things to see and places to go. The tube is a two minute walk away and takes about 15 minutes to get to Manhattan, and after a day in Manhattan, it was great to go somewhere a little quieter. From the tube it's easy to get to Prospect Park and Coney Island, both worth a visit for different reasons. Also, convenient for JFK airport. I would highly recommend staying here, and may well be staying here again in October next year.

New York Holiday

Review Submitted: 08 January 2011 Date of Stay: November 2010
My husband and I stayed in the studio at the end of November 2010. It was fantastic! It had everything we needed to make breakfast of a morning and the shower was fantastic at the end of the day. We travelled around the world and this was the best shower we had the whole trip!

The location was perfect - just around the corner was the subway station. The trains ran frequently and it wasn't too busy. Supermarkets and restaurants were close by. If you have a sweet tooth, we recommend you get some yummy desserts at "Desserts by Michael Allen" about 20min walk from the studio.

Even though it was freezing cold outside, we were nice and toasty inside.

Brooklyn is a wonderful place to stay and explore with many great restaurants, shops, parks and sightseeing spots. Well worth staying here. It was great value for money!

Brooklyn in October

We've just come back from a week in the 1 bed apartment in Brooklyn and it was fantastic. The apartment is just as in the pictures and as Emma describes. It is perfectly sized for two people and with the kitchen equipment great to have breakfast before the sightseeing begins.

It's a short walk to the subway station which takes you to Manhattan in about 15 mins and which we used all times of the day and night.

Emma is constantly on hand to offer advice and hints and tips. I would recommend Fort Greene - 2 subway stops away for a great selection of restaurants and shops etc.
The area is residential based and so we had no problem with noise and when asking for directions everyone was really helpful.

We’ve already told several of our friends especially about the larger apartments for groups or family’s which were upstairs.

What a fantastic place to stay! Nice friendly neighbourhood with Supermarket and deli's handy and Emma the owner could not due enough for you, she made you feel so welcome.
Everything was in the apartment that you needed, coffee maker, fridge and micro.
Previous guests also left bits and pieces but as Emma supplied the basics you wanted for nothing.
It was a clean and trendy apartment, the bathroom was amazing especially the shower!
This will definately be our destination for future visits to New York from now on!
Emma was always on hand with useful information on surrounding area that you would not normally bother with and because of this we have discovered a different side of Brooklyn!
We have stayed in Manhatten a couple of times but the apartment ideal as we would sit on the bench in the garden to relax after a hard days sightseeing...
It was especially handy getting the Air train from JfK then the A subway train, this cost just $7.65 a huge saving than using a taxi.
See you very soon Emma! xx

Great quality holiday at a budget price in NYC

Review Submitted: 17 September 2010 Date of Stay: September 2010
We have just stayed in the studio apartment this september and found it very comfortable with everything we needed including a coffee maker, fridge, microwave and iron. It is in a perfect location for Manhattan which we found it very easy to travel to and from everyday, with 2 subway stations nearby. Emma and James were extremely helpful before and during our stay, willing to answer any questions that we had. I would definitely stay here again and recommend this place to anyone wanting a great quality holiday at a budget price in NYC.

A great place to stay!

We just finished our trip to New York and we stayed in the Studio. It was very comfortable for two people. It was spotlessly clean on arrival. The kitchenette was more than adequate for our needs and the bathroom was excellent. The tub was massive and the shower has a head as big as a dinner plate! Both of these were a godsend after a hard day's touristing! The bed was very comfortable and the air con kept us comfortable during our very hot stay.
Emma and James were really helpful both before and during our stay. The communication before we arrived was fast and very helpful and informative. On arrival Emma made sure to explain all the details about the apartment and gave us lots of really useful information about what to see and do during our trip.
To get onto the subway you literally turn right leaving the house, walk to the end of the street, turn left and the subway is on the corner of the second block you reach - it's incredibly simple.
The area feels very safe and the people are friendly and welcoming.

It is an excellent place to stay and we would recommend it fully!

Great apartment!

Review Submitted: 17 November 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
We stayed in the Jefferson Annex apartment in October 2009 for 7
nights and thought it was fantastic.

It's cosy, clean, modern and has absolutely everything you need.
There's more than enough space for two people. The bathroom is big and very stylish with a great shower and plenty of hot water. The
kitchenette is very well equipped - we didn't actually cook but it
was really handy having a fridge and microwave etc.

Emma the owner is so friendly and welcoming, she's incredibly helpful
and happy to answer any questions you might have.

The apartment is a real bargain, and far nicer and cheaper than
staying in a hotel in Manhattan. The nearest subway is only a couple
of minutes walk away and very well connected with trains to Manhattan every 10 minutes or so. Plus you get the bonus of being able to explore Brooklyn and get a different perspective on New York.

We would definitely stay here again!

Perfect appartment to visit NY

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 10 July 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
This appartment is what you need to visit NY, it's not an advertising it's reality!
It's clean, well decorated and the owner is very friendly.
It's near of subway and you can go everywhere quickly.
A lot of advices from the owner, very good communication.
We are french and were afraid about rental of appartment in US. After two weeks if I need to come back in NY I will take same appartment because with this owner I will have no stress next time.
To finish, I think Brooklyn is a very good point of start.
Don't rent in Manhattan it's really full of tourists and in brooklyn it's like "real life" situation and with no stress
(we came back at midnight by subway from our visits)
it's perfect!

Clean, modern apartment - perfect for couples

4 out of 5
Review Submitted: 26 June 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
This apartment is exactly as the photos show - modern, bright, clean and with everything you need - with a small outdoors space to sit and enjoy the sun. The bathroom has a fantastic bath and rain shower with constant hot water. The bed is comfortable, ample wardrobe space, fridge, microwave and best of all a coffee machine so you can wake up to your very own Starbucks!

Emma, the owner, emailed me back immediately, answered all my questions thoroughly. She was always around during my stay and very friendly and helpful as she knows the area well.

The subway stop, Franklin Ave, is just a few minutes walk to take you to Manhattan or pretty Brooklyn Heights (I walked the bridge after Sunday brunch which was lovely). Also about eight minutes walk you can get the subway (Bedford-Nostrand Ave) line up to Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg - a mix of San Francisco and London's Camden, it has a relaxed student feel and is the best place in the area for coffee or meals to then get a cab back. There aren't many cafes or restaurants immediately around the apartment so if you're planning to eat at home, buy food before you return.

If you are arriving at JFK airport, the A line subway takes you to Nostrand Ave which is about five minutes walk from the apartment and takes about 50 minutes.

The area is suburban and quiet. I felt at home in the apartment and it's a great opportunity for seeing the alternative, less touristy side of New York. Ideal for young couples or savvy travellers.

Studio Annex

Review Submitted: 19 September 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
The studio fulfilled all our requirements, wishes and expectations: it was clean, comfortable, cheap and the connection to Manhattan is perfect. The next subway station, which is Franklin Avenue, is within walking distance (it takes about 3 min). The C-train takes you directly in the center of Manhattan.
We definitely liked the neighbourhood. The people are very friendly and you get to know the non-touristic side of New York City, which has much more charme =). A supermarket is also close-by.
Emma is very kind and helpful as you can call her anytime if you have any questions. She tries to make your stay in New York City as comfortable as she can. Our emails were rapidly answered and Emma was really cooperative.
We do absolutely recommend this studio!
