About Mrs Pat Colson

I was actually born in Cowbridge, South Wales, but my parents moved to the Cotswolds to farm when I was 3 months old. I have lived in this area on farms ever since!

Mrs Pat Colson purchased this cottage in 2003
Why Mrs Pat Colson chose Witney

We bought this small farm 9 years ago, as we wanted to downsize and concentrate on stock farming and breeding rare-breed pigs and Welsh Ponies. We also have commercial sheep and cattle. The Old Bakehouse was a disused barn next to the main farmhouse which housed the bread oven and washing copper. We converted it 7 years ago into a holiday cottage and it has been fully booked ever since! We have many regulars stay with us.

What makes this cottage unique

Field Farm is a unique farm in the traditional manner. It has lovely old listed barns, stone walls and acres of old permanent grasslands with no corn in sight. The rolling hills descend into a beautiful wetland with stream and young woodland, a breeding ground for snipe, barn owls and other lovely wild birds.

A perfect basis for exploring

There is so much to see and do in the area. In less then one hour, you can reach lovely villages, castles, gardens and much more in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and the Cotswold area.

The location of the cottage is perfect, sorrounded by countryside and farm animals, its peaceful and relaxing.

The owners are very welcoming, discreet and though helpful, don't hesitate to ask where to eat in the area. We were suggested some local Inns, with great food and atmosphere.

The cottage fulfill in al ways our expectations. Wonderfuld beds. It was spotless and provided with everything we needed.

We will definitely recommed this property to our friends.

Superb cottage

We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at The Old Bakehouse to find to a very tasty home made cake, milk in the fridge and fruit in the fruit bowl. Pat and Peter greeted us with a warm welcome which gave a relaxed atmosphere for the coming week. If you run short of eggs, they are happy to oblige with a supply from their chickens.

The cottage is very well equipped, with good instructions from Pat on how all the appliances work. Having free Wi Fi in the cottage was a real bonus. We are lovers of real coffee, and there was even a cafeteria so we could make some real coffee.
Both bedrooms are downstairs with en suite. We didn't use the lounge upstairs as the conservatory was warm and very comfortable with a sofa and free view TV.

It is situated in the middle of a stud farm and farm yard, surrounded by open countryside where there are horses and farm animals. With horses stabled in the yard there is always something to watch throughout the day. We had two dogs with us and the cottage has a paved courtyard leading from the conservatory which is very well fenced. The farm has footpaths leading to beautiful countryside where we were able to walk the dogs.

We had such a relaxing week in tranquil and pleasant surroundings that we have booked for a return visit next March and it will be so nice to see Pat and Peter again, the owners of the Old Bakehouse, who made us so welcome and were the perfect hosts.
Owner's Response: Thank you!!!! Look forward to seeing you both in the Spring.

Beautiful cottage and location

Review Submitted: 22 August 2012 Date of Stay: August 2012
The Old Bakehouse provided both fantastic location and accommodation. It had everything necessary for a relaxing stay and was close to numerous places to visit. We spent most of our time in the sunroom at the back and the courtyard garden as it was so pleasant and we had our meals outside most days as it was nice to see and hear the daily routine of the farm. The cottage was great for my parents who have some mobility problems as you can happily stay downstairs if necessary. The owners were very welcoming and provided us with all we needed during our stay.
Blenheim Palace is very worth a visit, both the house and gardens, and try and see the man-made cascade in the grounds which are amazing. Burford and Burton are lovely villages to visit with lots of walks. We went to Oxford twice and would recommend the Park and Ride plus the museums. It is easy to walk around without relying on any of the tours.
Everyone on the farm were friendly and happy to talk to you about where to visit. We had daily updates about the mare that was due to foal and were lucky enough to see the foal the day after it was born.
I would definitely recommend the Old Bakehouse and am hoping to return sometime in the future.
Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the review Gill. It was lovely to meet you and hopefully we will see you again one day!

The Best Cottage we've ever stayed in!

The Best Cottage we've ever stayed in!

Review Submitted: 01 March 2012 Date of Stay: February 2012
We had the pleasure of staying at The Old Bakehouse on two separate occasions this year. Our first stay was out of necessity as we needed accomodation in the area for work purposes, however, having stayed the for a week in January, and having enjoyed it so much, we booked and stayed for 5 days at the end of Feb 2012. The Old Bakehouse is a wonderful place to stay and retains some beautiful features, whilst offering every comfort you could wish for. Located in a breathtakingly tranquil setting, it is the perfect place to unwind and get away from the stress of very day life. Though a comfortably short journey time from London it is however a million miles away from the hustle and bustle and lives up to everything you would hope a countryside bolt hole to be. Fantastic though the cottage is, the real selling point of the Old Bakehouse is it's owners, Pat and Peter. Even the fantastic facitilities and excellent location pale in comparison to these truly kind and lovely people, who immediately make you feel at home and genuinely welcome you. Over the years we have stayed in some great cottages, however, sometimes a place and the people capture your heart and we have to say the Old Bakehouse is one of those places. The cottage was immaculate upon our arrival and the kitchen is really well stocked with all the equiptment any budding chef could wish for. Perfect for reading the morning papers, the conservatory looks out on stables and you can while away many an hour watching the comings and goings of the farm. We particularly loved the living room upstairs in the Old Bakehouse, which with it's original beams was a perfect place to snuggle up at the end of the day and relax before heading to bed in the very comfortable and beautifully furnished bedroom. With a nicely sized en-suite bathroom, with a great power shower to wake you up in the morning, every comfort is catered for, whilst retaining a really homely and cosy atmosphere. We are definitely looking forward to returning to the Old Bakehouse and can honestly say that our search for the perfect retreat has ended. We can only thank Pat and Peter for sharing their beautiful farm and cottage with us and for being the best hosts one could wish for.

Ideal Holiday Location. July 2011

Review Submitted: 14 August 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
We have just returned from a lovely fortnight in this charming cottage. The cottage is full of character and is equipped with everything you would need during your stay. The surroundings are idyllic and peaceful and the owners are more than happy to supply tips on where to visit, where to eat etc. The cottage was also extremely clean and well cared for. It is an ideal base for visiting both Oxfordshire and the Cotswolds and in particular we enjoyed walking in the grounds of Blenheim Palace and a trip to Bourton on the Water in the Cotswolds. It is also an ideal place to take dogs as there are so many local footpaths and plenty of dog friendly establishments nearby. Would not hesitate to recommend this property and would definitely return. Many thanks.

The Old Bakehouse June 2011.

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 11 July 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
This is a gem of a place situated on a delightfully peaceful farm in the beautiful village of North Leigh. The cottage itself is immaculately decorated and furnished, with traditional features. The farm is a really relaxing place to stay and this was our third consective summer holiday there. There are loads of things to do locally and slightly further afield. We spent an afternoon in Witney, another afternoon at Blenheim Palace walking in the grounds and a day at the Cotswold Falconry Centre near Stow on the Wold. The ancient Rollright Stones were a fascinating visit too, as were the Ruins and Dovecote at Minster Lovell. Pat provides a warm welcome each year too. I would recommend the Old Bakehouse to anyone who is looking for a relaxing holiday in idyllic surroundings. We're already booked for next year, and the year and the year after.

Amazing Renovated 17th Century Bakehouse

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 22 October 2010 Date of Stay: September 2010
This property had all the modern conveniences while at the same time maintaining its old world charm. The kitchen (including the original brick oven) was spacious with tile floors, granite counter tops, microwave, dishwasher, clothes washer, and well equipped with essential cooking tools. The dining/sitting room was very comfortable with the roof and one side being all glass and opening out onto a walled courtyard, complete with barbeque. Both bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with twin beds had ensuite bathrooms. One bathroom was a fully-tiled wetroom and very spacious. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were warm and cozy. The upstairs loft area was a great reading area and a place to watch cable TV.

This place was also special because of its location on a beautiful farm in the small village. It was ideal for walkers as public footpaths were accessible from the farm and we could walk to many nearby villages. The market town of Witney is a fun place to explore and is a short bus or car ride away. There are many places of interest within an easy drive (Blenheim Palace, Oxford, Cotswold villages).

The Old Bake House was far better than we imagined from reviewing the property listing. It was in immaculate condition and Farmer Pat went out of her way to be a gracious hostess and a reference for what to do and where to eat in the area. One of our favorite pubs was The Old Plough Inn, which was about 3 miles from the cottage.

We have traveled extensively in England since 1975 and this is definitely one of our favorite lodgings and we look forward to returning. It is a five-star property and you will not be disappointed.

Delightful Cottage in Brilliant Location

5 out of 5
Review Submitted: 18 October 2010 Date of Stay: October 2010
This was our second visit this year to 'The Bakehouse'. Again, the facilities and home comforts were all that one could ask for.
The cottage is uniquely situated in the centre of a working farm and stables, yet providing you with total privacy and space. The owners, Pat and Peter, are busy people but most welcoming and there to provide you with helpful advice and support whenever required.
The immediate surrounding area provides beautiful rolling countryside featuring fields bordered by trees and hedgerows and a network of paths and lanes. Great walking opportunities for the dog! And some exercise will be necessary should you wish to combat indulging in the culinary delights afforded by the numerous tearooms, restaurants and pubs!
The delightful town of Witney is a ten-minute drive away. Woodstock and Burford are nearby. But the Cotswolds are teeming with 'must-visit' spots. The cottage has a great collection of tourist brochures and pamphlets to whet your appetite. Enjoy!

Owner's Response: Thank you Iain for reviewing the cottage. I hope the weather was a bit better than the weather you had in Scotland last Summer. Thank you also for leaving the cottage so beautifully tidy and clean. Hopefully we will see you again. Very best wishes.
