Radicondoli is a municipality in the Province of Siena, deep in the heart of Tuscany, Italy. Rising high on the Metallifere Hills, this quaint town has a population of just 1,200 people, but still attracts its fair share of visitors, who often stay in stay in farmhouses and apartments dotted around the area.
With such a small community, Tuscan life continues in its traditional manner, and locals are extremely friendly. Recent tourism has brought more money into the area, and much of the area has been recently restored. Radicondoli offers visitors a slice of Tuscan life, at considerably less cost than the nearby big cities.
Radicondoli was a fortified town, and the original town walls are almost totally incorporated into the fabric of the houses. Many of these town houses are impressive architectural works, and date back hundreds of years. Some even act as tourist accommodation, and offer a great base from which to view the town.
There are several churches in Radicondoli, including the Chiesa del Crocifisso, which dates back to 1724. It originally provided accommodation for pilgrims. The Collegiata (Collegiate Church) dei Santi Simone e Giuda, the Augustinian monastery and the attached Chiesa di Santa Caterina are also well worth a visit when sightseeing.
There is more to do in Radicondoli than just walking around the town and sightseeing. There are a small but friendly selection of cafes, bars and restaurants, and several family-run shops along the main street. It is also highly recommended that you make a journey into the outlying countryside, and soak up the Tuscan sun in the process.
If you would like to try something different, the area is also renowned for its thermal baths and smoke holes. The spa waters at Bagni delle Gallleraie are just 15 kilometres away.
When staying in Radicondoli you are spoilt for choice, should you wish to venture further on your travels. With Radicondoli located in the Val d’Elsa, there are many other charming medieval towns’ just short journeys away, as well as the cities of Florence, Siena and Pisa little more than an hour’s drive out of Radicondoli.
As with much of Tuscany, the climate in Radicondoli is ideal for visitors. Summer temperatures average around 24C, making it ideal for enjoying the outdoors, whether it is walking around the countryside or relaxing outside your holiday villa with a glass of wine. Rainfall is also relatively low for most of the year.
There are several options when flying to your holiday accommodation in Radicondoli. Pisa Airport (PSA) is around an hour away by bus or car, and Florence Airport (FLR) is another option at a similar distance. Budget airlines fly to both of these airports (though Pisa is more common), and it is recommended that you shop around for the best deal.
