Best known for its fantastic beaches, the Punta Cana district of La Altagracia is one of the Dominican Republic’s fastest growing and most popular tourist destinations. Lying to the far east of the island, the Punta Cana resort is home to glorious beaches, a great nightlife, fantastic shopping opportunities and sporting facilities galore, making it a popular choice with newlyweds and other couples, and anyone seeking the ultimate in relaxation and leisure holidays.
The main thing that people head to Punta Cana for is to relax! The main place for this is the beach, and there can be few better places for beaches than the Dominican Republic. There are around a dozen fantastic beaches to choose from within the district alone, including Playa de Arena Gorda on the north of the cape, and Punta Cana beach in the south.
The nightlife in Punta Cana is vibrant, and there are a number of busy bars, restaurants and nightclubs to choose from. Many of these attract both locals and tourists, resulting in a friendly atmosphere, and you can choose from a throbbing basement nightclub, or a laid-back beach bar, and sip a cocktail as you gaze out at the clear waters of the Caribbean Ocean.
Punta Cana is also a great place to shop, with a number of top brands having retail outlets in the resort. Other activities you may wish to consider in the area include playing a round of golf, taking your pick from many types of water sports, visiting a casino or relaxing at a spa. You can even take a helicopter ride around the district and get a bird’s eye view of the spectacular surrounding scenery.
With so much to see and do in and around Punta Cana, you may be hard pressed to find time to leave the resort, but it is strongly recommended that you do. Nearby Saona Island is popular for scuba diving, and there are a huge number of high quality beaches scattered along the east coast of the island, just waiting to be explored.
The weather in Punta Cana could be described as consistently glorious, with an average temperature of above 27C all year round. The hottest time of the year is between May and December, when it can reach 35C or above, but any time is a great time to visit if you are a sun-seeker. The landscape is flat, which also results in low rainfall for the majority of the year, and a gentle coastal breeze will keep you cool all year round.
Punta Cana has its own airport, the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), which receives direct flights from London Gatwick (LGW) through British Airways and Thomas Cook, and from Manchester through Thomas Cook only. The flight time from the UK is around nine hours.
