Punta Ala (formerly known as Punta Troia) is an upmarket area of the town of Castiglione della Pescaia in the Grosseto province of Tuscany, Italy. Punta Ala is one of the most popular destinations in this part of the country, and it is easy to see why – as it is home to some of the area's best beaches, fantastic and unspoilt scenery, and provides visitors with panoramic sea views out from its position on a promontory jetting out into the Tyrrenhian Sea.
Since the 1970's Punta Ala has developed considerably, and is now a destination that caters well for tourists, but still does not become overrun with them. The beaches are the main attraction, but the town also has modern amenities, as well as a number of monuments and more historical attractions.
Punta Ala marks the start of a long sandy stretch of beach that runs all the way to Marina di Grosseto, some 20km south-east around the coast. The beach makes for good sunbathing and relaxing, especially during summer months, when the warm waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea can also be enjoyed for their swimming opportunities.
Punta Ala is also a great destination for a golfing holiday, with the nearby Golf Club Punta Ala offering 18 excellent holes amongst some stunning scenery. The whole resort is relatively upmarket, with a number of luxury yachts to be found in the marina and a selection of high-class accommodation options.
Punta Ala has many attractions, and it would be easy to spend the vast majority of your vacation either on the beach, exploring the town or enjoy the comforts of your Punta Ala villa. If you manage to head out and explore the surrounding area, however, you may wish to visit the nearby town of Castiglione della Pescaia, which has more in the way historical sites and cultural attractions.
Punta Ala weather is great beach weather between June and August, when temperatures average 28C, and you are almost guaranteed several hours worth of sunshine every day. A holiday in Punta Ala can still be enjoyed outside of peak season, and if you plan an active break you may wish to visit in the slightly cooler months of May or September.
Punta Ala can be reached from the UK by way of flight to Pisa Galileo Galilei Airport (PSA) . The drive from the airport to Punta Ala is nothing short of spectacular, and turns a 131km transfer into a 90-minute scenic drive through some of Tuscany's finest landscapes. Consider adding extra value to your holiday by stopping off at the port city of Livorno along the way.
