The east coast of Almeria is largely unspolit, and with a large Blue Flag beach, good amenities and many tourist attractions, it is easy to see why the resort of Puerto Rey is fast becoming the choice of destination for many holidaymakers to the area. This purpose-built resort is well designed, boasts an excellent beach and is extremely well located – an all-round excellent choice of holiday rental destination for those seeking a ‘sun, sea and sand’ break.
Puerto Rey has many of the traditional attractions that holidaymakers look for when heading to Spain. This includes a good selection of communal swimming pools, tennis courts and other sporting facilities, supermarkets, bars and restaurants – meaning if you plan to relax during the daytimes and enjoy your evenings, you will not go home disappointed.
When it comes to the beaches, Puerto Rey is also extremely well equipped. The main beach – Vera Playa – is a long sandy stretch that has been awarded the EU Blue Flag for its high quality. There are more amenities on the beach, including the all-important beach bar and water sports options, and the water itself is warm and of good quality, making it ideal for swimming.
Despite its increasing popularity, Puerto Rey is still a relatively quiet resort, and ideal for a relaxing break. Those seeking a more hectic atmosphere and nightlife can take the short journey along the coast to Mojacar, which one of south-east Spain’s most popular holiday resorts, with many more cafes, bars and restaurants to choose from. The beauty of this is that you can enjoy the party atmosphere, but then return to your quieter resort when it is time to sleep.
When visiting Puerto Rey, an effort should be made to visit some of the surrounding towns and villages, which offer more in the way of traditional Spanish life. These include Vera, Garrucha and Bedar. There are also further sporting attractions just a short drive from Puerto Rey, including a number of high-quality golf courses, Go-Karting and a water park.
The Almeria province receives some of the best weather in Europe, which a whopping 3,000 hours of sunshine every year. This means that you can expect to sunbathe on the balcony of your Puerto Rey accommodation in summer temperatures above 28C, with July and August the hottest months in which to visit. Rainfall is almost non-existent in the area from May to September, and even winter months are largely dry.
The best airport to fly to when holidaying in Puerto Rey, Spain, is Almeria Airport (LEI), which is located around 80km from your destination. Airlines flying from the UK include Bmibaby (East Midlands), Ryanair (London Stansted), easyJet (London Gatwick) and Thomas Cook (Manchester, Birmingham and London Gatwick).
