Port Maria is the capital town of the St. Mary parish on the beautiful island of Jamaica. Once an important port, the town sits inland from a wonderful horse shoe shaped bay with steep hills as its backdrop. The town is quiet compared to other tourist areas of Jamaica which makes it an ideal location for renting an apartment. You still have access to various outdoor activities in Port Maria, but you are guaranteed to be secluded from the crowds and bustle.
Going on a Port Maria holiday is one of the best ways to find peace and relaxation alongside fun and adventure. The town has its own beautiful sandy beach where visitors can enjoy a spot of swimming, sunbathing, diving, snorkelling, sailing and fishing. Other activities available in the town include cycling and hiking, thanks to the hilly areas above the bay of Port Maria.
One must-see when on holiday in Port Maria is Firefly, the holiday home on Jamaica of the famous playwright Noel Coward. The house is now a museum and Noel Coward’s final resting place. Firefly was built on a high point above the town which was once the look-out point for the pirate Henry Morgan. Not only is Firefly one of the best places to get stunning views of the town and the sea, it is a perfect subject for those who are keen on painting, drawing or photography.
No trip to the wonderful island of Jamaica would be complete without venturing further a field to the capital city of Kingston. If you can tear yourself away from your wonderful Port Maria accommodation, you will find culture, music and Jamaican history in abundance. Fans of the legendary Bob Marley should make a stop at the museum in the city, which was the star’s former home. There is a lot of information to be found here including a tour of the museum and a film about Marley’s life.
Nature lovers will want to visit the Hope Botanical Gardens which not only provide peace and tranquillity away from the centre of the city, but a collection of immaculately green lawns and sprawling palm trees. Adjoining the gardens is Hope Zoo where you will find many animals including crocodiles, flamingos, zebras, lions, gazelles and the Jamaican Fruit Bat.
Port Maria lies on the coast but is 1,000 metres above sea level which means that it is slightly cooler than other areas on the island. The warmest months are between May and September. The months of July and August are the hottest in the town with temperatures reaching a daytime average of 28°C. The good news is that there are regular sea breezes to help visitors stay cool. Visitors should note that Jamaica is within the hurricane and earthquake belts although these incidents rarely occur.
Travellers can arrive at Norman Manley International Airport (KIN), which is just under 70 kilometres from Port Maria. There are a few operators who offer affordable direct flights to Jamaica including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways. Other airlines offering indirect flights include American Airlines, Air Canada and Caribbean Airlines. Passengers can depart from various UK airports such as Gatwick (LGW), London Heathrow (LHR), Aberdeen (ABZ), Edinburgh (EDI), Leeds (LBA) and Manchester (MAN).
