Pieve Fosciana, hidden in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, offers visitors the chance to leave the hustle and bustle of the city far behind and relax in beautiful green surroundings. Nestled on the side of a hill amidst fields and forest, visitors can get out and explore the countryside or relax next to their own private pool and simply admire the view from their holiday villa.
One of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of the surroundings is to get out and explore the area around Pieve Fosciana on foot, and there are lots of opportunities for walking in the Garfagnana National Park which surrounds Pieve Fosciana. The town is at the foothills of the Appenines, which also makes for several more challenging hikes around the area to take in the spectacular views across the Serchio Valley.
Visitors should also spend at least some time exploring the small town of Pieve Fosciana itself, which has several sights of cultural significance such as Saint Magno Church and the Tower of Silico. The small town was originally settled by the ancient Romans, and has ever since been dedicated to agriculture. While the town is not particularly lively, there are several great restaurants where visitors can sample local Tuscan dishes, including wonderful fresh pasta, all for far less than you would pay in the city.
If the tranquillity and isolation which comes with a holiday villa in Pieve Fosciana gets a little too much, the town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is only a 15 minute drive away. Here visitors will find several bars, cafes and restaurants where many happy afternoons can be spent gorging on local food and wine. The town also has a local market on Thursday mornings, which is an ideal place for self-catering visitors to stock up on fresh local produce.
The medieval town of Barga is also only 15km from Pieve Fosciana, with its beautiful Duomo or cathedral. The Opera Barga festival is the highlight of the town’s calendar, held bi-annually in July, with performances from local and sometimes world-renowned opera singers.
Pieve Fosciana benefits from a beautiful Mediterranean climate which sees dry summers and temperatures of up to 28C. Winters are also very mild, with temperatures still peaking at around 12C and less than 1 in 3 rainy days, which makes a holiday home in Pieve Fosciana a great place to escape the English winter.
Visitors to Pieve Fosciana may choose to fly into either Galileo Galilei Airport at Pisa (PSA) or Florence Airport (FLR). Pisa receives flights from many of the UK’s budget airlines such as easyJet several times weekly, while Florence receives those of the larger airlines such as bmi and other national airlines. Pisa is also slightly closer at 87km instead of 111km.
