The town of Pescaglia lies in the countryside of the Lucca Province of northern Tuscany. Lying in the heart of the Province, in the Poggio Valley, the town is split into three sections, Castello del Poggio, Piazzanello or Villabuona. Pescaglia is a magnificent hideaway in the foothills of the woodland carpeted foothills of the eastern Apuan Alps, where peace and natural beauty will be a large feature of your holiday. There can be few places better suited to just getting away, relaxing and enjoying all that is best about rural Tuscany.
Waking up in a Pescaglia property, opening the curtains and watching the sun rising over the wooded hills is the ideal start to a day. There are more walking, mountain biking and horse riding tracks through the hills than you could possibly take on in a single holiday, with tracks dating back many centuries. Walking holidays in Pescaglia are sensational, and the heart cuisine and fine wines synonymous with the area are absolutely perfect after a long day exploring the hills. The Garfagnana National Park lies right on the doorstep of a Pescaglia holiday home, which is home to a huge variety of wildlife, and one of the few places where wolves still roam free in Europe. There are plenty of tours of the park.
Taking a self catering Pescaglia property is the only way to truly experience the area, allowing you to fish for your supper in the tributaries and rivers which gush along the valleys, and cook them with the finest of local vegetables, and a splash of wine. Alternatively, you can leave the cooking to the experts and savour the wild boar and authentic pizzas. You will never be short on cooking advice if you ask, and there are some excellent one, two and 5 day cooking courses to take too.
The stunning walled town of Lucca is just 20 minutes drive from a Pescaglia villa. The historic walled town is undoubtedly the largest tourist attraction in the area, with a vast wealth of cultural, artistic and historical attractions, as well as some excellent bars and restaurants in which to enjoy your evenings.
The town of Borgo a Mozzano is the closest town, just 15 minutes away. The Devil’s Bridge is well worth exploring, not only due to its bizarre construction, but also for the folklore which surrounds it. The Tuscan coast is only 45 minutes away too, meaning you can easily take a day on the fine golden sands of Viareggio from your self catering Pescaglia property.
The summer is delightfully warm in Pescaglia. Temperatures routinely hit 30˚C in July and August, although the crisp mountain air remains wonderfully fresh, helped by the breezes coming up from the coast. In winter, average monthly temperatures drop to around 5˚C.
Pisa Airport (PSA) is just 45 minutes by car from Pescaglia. There are frequent direct flights to Pisa from across the UK, mainly provided by Ryanair. The area is extremely rural, meaning that a hire car is strongly advised for getting the most out of your Pescaglia holiday.
