Sitting on a spit into the Mediterranean on Spain’s Costa del Azahar, Peniscola is known as the ‘City in the Sea’. The old town is absolutely stunning, surrounding the ancient fortress that protected the town during Spain’s more turbulent moments in history. Walking the streets of the old town is an absolute delight. The narrow streets bustle with activity, from the street stalls to the top class restaurants, and there are a huge number of sites to investigate. The castle is an excellent place to start your exploration of the old town, which juts out into the warm waters of the Mediterranean.
However, it is the beaches which really cause a stir with visitors. There are many miles of uninterrupted sand running away to the north of the town for 7km, much of which is lined with a smart new promenade. To the south of a Peniscola villa there is a further 1km of pristine, blue flag beach to enjoy. There will never be a problem finding a good spot on the beach on which to place your towel, and trips out into the Mediterranean are easily arranged from the harbour. During your stay in a privately owned Peniscola villa you can go deep sea fishing, scuba diving or try a huge variety of water sports, from sailing to windsurfing.
