Hale Huna('Hidden House')is a wonderful cottage on a hillside near the 'end of the road' on North Kauai. Located on a quiet cul-de-sac with only a few other local houses. Very private and peaceful (It is NOT on/near the highway like many Kauai rentals). Perfect for a meditative getaway or honeymoon cottage. Healing and restful.
Beautiful views of green mountains from backyard. Lush plant life, including mango, banana, avocado, papaya and lime trees. Outdoor shower sheltered by bamboo bushes. This is a small but charming and tastefully furnished plantation-style cottage with the feel of 'real' Hawaii. Within five minutes drive of gorgeous sandy beaches, incredible snorkeling at Tunnels, Ke'e and Lumahai Beaches and world class surf at Hanalei Bay.
The closest town is charming Hanalei, which has restaurants, a grocery store, a health food store, shops, bars and more. Hanalei Bay is famous for its large crescent beach, winter surfing and calm summer waters. The stunning Na Pali Coast is just minutes away (the mountains seen from the backyard are the back of the Pali's/Mountains).
The North Shore of Kauai is known for its lush, tropical, rainforest-like climate and vegetation and low key lifestyle. It's a fantastic place to relax, read, swim, hike, surf, snorkel, eat fresh fish and my favorite, just walking on the beach looking for shells. This is not a standard rental and is in a 'local' neighborhood, off of the beaten path, giving it a special and unique feeling of Old Hawaii.
We are a family of 4, who live in Avon, Colorado. We feel so blessed to be able to enjoy the contrasting beauty of the Colorado mountains and the tropics of Kauai. Our two sons feel pretty lucky that they get to ski at home and play in the ocean in Kauai.
Kristi Ferraro purchased this house in 2007
We always found ourselves being drawn back to the North Shore of Kauai, so we decided to take the plunge and buy a place. We couldn't believe that we found such a cute, vintage cottage. It truly feels like the Kauai I remembered from my first visit as a young kid in 1971.
We love eating the fruit from our yard and getting to know our local neighbors. We spend almost every day at the beach. We can hardly believe that some of the most dazzling places in the world are just a few miles from our cottage: Hanalei Bay, Tunnels Beach, the Napali coast, Ke'e Beach, the Kalalau Trail and Lumahai Beach.
a wonderful time here - I cannot recommend it more highly. we enjoyed the layout, the grapefruit tree in the front yard, the grill [which we used for fresh fish every night], the outdoor shower [hot and cold], the proximity to the beaches and the market, the proximity to great hiking, the quiet, the comfortable beds - in short, everything. we rented a car, which helped, as we toured the entire island. we left several Kauai books on the shelf including the hiking trails book. we were there in the 'rainy season' [early December] even though it barely rained - outstanding! even the bird watching in the backyard was fun. two big big thumbs up.
My husband and I celebrated his 60th birthday at Hale Huna - what a treat. The property is lovely, clean, beautifully maintained - and beyond special. It is very private - we were a little shy about trying the outside shower, but we did and never took another inside! If you want to visit a place that nurtures the soul this is it.
My wife and son (1.5 yo) had a wonderful week long stay at Hale Huna! Well kept, clean house with plenty of privacy. The home is tucked up in the hill and is on a wonderfully landscaped piece of property. The pictures do not do justice. There are 2 rooms plus a den that has an additional single bed. All the amenities are listed and everything is in great shape. Plenty of snorkel gear, coolers, chairs, umbrella etc. Highly recommend this property, it's the nicest house on the street and in a great location on the island!
The owners were easy to deal with and everything was excellent with this rental.
The three of us, all adults, really enjoyed staying at Hale Huna! The "Zen-Hawaiian" decor really made it a fantastic place to return after an adventure-filled day. We enjoyed using the boogie boards and snorkel gear, a bonus of not renting. One of my fondest memories is using the outdoor shower at night, star gazing and appreciating the lush tropical garden. Ahhh.
My only complaint is a small one, the beautiful wood counter tops must be kept dry to prevent discoloring. Otherwise, the property was very clean and exceeded expectation. A definite recommendation and probable return.
We just spent 10 nights at Hale Huna for our first visit to Hawaii on Kauai.
In some ways we don't want to post a review, since it's letting the world in on a secret we'd rather keep to ourselves. But we owe it to the owner, Kristi, who is preserving this beautiful plantation house in simple and authentic fashion. She was the most professional, responsive owner we've had the pleasure of communicating with in a long time. If you enjoy staying in a resort with valet service and a swimming pool for the kids, search elsewhere. But if you like staying in a place that feels like the summer home your favorite uncle used to invite you to visit when you were a kid, you're getting warmer. Hang out in the hammock chair and soak up the brilliant colors of the tropical vegetation surrounding the house. Shower off the salt outside and listen to a shama bird serenade you in the quiet. Enjoy comfortable beds, high-thread count sheets, soft towels, artistic lighting, well-appointed kitchen. Love to cook like we do? There's not much better in life then buying fresh mahi-mahi at Dolphin to grill up at Hale Huna. Garnish with fresh mango from a farmers market, while watching the evening light on the mountain ridge from the back yard. Oh, and 5 minutes to Lumahai, 7 minutes to Tunnels, 14 minutes to Kee.

From the moment we arrived we loved this cottage. It was in absolutely perfect condition, extremely clean with a private patio and beautiful yard. We were so impressed with the decor...extremely warm and beautiful. It didn't seem at all like a typical rental property, but rather a well-loved and cared for abode. Thankfully it was quiet, great for cooking, reading and simply enjoying. In fact each day we looked forward to coming "home" to the place and taking the spectacular (and unique for us) outdoor shower :)
The location for us was quite wonderful since we love the north shore of Kauai. We were able to see sunsets at the end of the road, hike the Napali Coast twice (it's only a few miles from the place and probably one of the most scenic hikes in the world!), enjoy the beaches, etc. When we were ready to have company it was only a short drive to Hanalei for dinner and Princeville and Kilauea for more
food and sight-seeing. It wasn't even a bother to drive to Lihue for the helicopter ride. Again, we always looked forward to going home. Even sleeping was perfect-great ventilation and tranquil.
In short, Loved our stay and would go back without hesitation!!!!
