A perfect winter hideaway!!

  • 5 out of 5
From the moment we arrived at the drive of westlodge we knew it was going to be everything we hoped for.... a tucked away cottage with the most amazing views!
The pictures do not do the place as much justice as it deserves, it is BEAUTIFUL!! The Kitchen is huge with a lovely table for all 6 of us to sit around and enjoy a champagne New years eve meal, the bedrooms are lovely sizes, one with an enormous ensuite.
We have just got back today, and although the drive from Somerset was very long, the holiday was totally worth the wait.
We spent the week by the fire, eating and drinking whilst watching the snow fall, we built a snowman and went for a long walk in the best snow I have ever seen down to the Iced over river, we drove to loch ness and inverness but only left the house as we were feeling guilty for over-relaxing!!
This house is perfect for a winter get away, the owners were very good and quick to responding to my emails regading directions and weather updates, we hope to go back next year to see the house in sunshine and do some more exploring!
I would definatly reccommend Westlodge Cottage to anyone wanting a beautiful relaxing Scottish break, just be prepared in winter like we were... stock the car/bags with wellies, water-proof clothing, red wine and Champagne!!! Oh and some food maybe, although the co-op in the village has everything you need and very friendly staff!
See you next year Westlodge, thanks for a great week!!

Happy holidaying!!!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review, a pleasure to have such good people. Good to see you had a nice NewYear. Sorry to hear you had to leave one day early because of the snow. We can sort this out the next time you come :-)

Thanks again, Roland and Carla.

Beautiful house in a wonderful land

  • 5 out of 5
We enjoyed really much our stay in Westlodge Cottage. Charming place to live in, the house is spacious, clean with a fully furnished kitchen and everything you need to make you feel home. The countryside is beautiful and there are many things to see and to do if you like nature, Scottisch culture and history. Upon our arrival, we were welcomed by a deer, which would visited us regularly during the week. The children were so enchanted that they believed to be in a fairytale movie. Somehow I think we all did.
Roland and Carla were really helpful providing any answers and informations needed (for us notably fishing possibilities and contacts in the area). Also, the welcome present was a very nice gesture we deeply appreciate.
Definitely a must!

a house with a fascinatin charakter on a very fine ground. We felt like guestes and not as tourists.
Only one wish we have had- it would be fine for us, to have contact or a short meeting with the host family during our stay.

Wonderful, very well equipped and maintained lodge

  • 5 out of 5
What a place to stay. Of the many lodges we have visited in Scotland this was the best. It felt even better than at home. The wonderful welcome with fresh Salmon and a bottle of wine. The outside fireplace, the deer in the backyard. The comfortable and luxurious Bedrooms. The very nice and quiet environment. Extremely comfortable to stay here, while the real Scotland is always very close.

Wonderful Cottage in a Great Location

  • 5 out of 5
We spent a wonderful week at West Lodge Cottage in June. We chose this cottage when looking for a comfortable home in the country that would serve as our home base for exploring the northern highlands as well as researching some Ross roots in Tain. West Lodge cottage is situated in a beautiful location in the countryside. The gardens and views of the surrounding hills and Cromarty Firth are wonderful. We spent most of our days out exploring, but loved returning to our home away from home. We cooked in three nights in the very well stocked kitchen. There was a fairly well-stocked shop just a couple of miles down the road, which made getting whatever we needed easy.
Although the weather was very, we enjoyed one evening outside with a fire in the fire pit.
The three horses in the back field also came by for a visit each evening.
Although other guests spoke of seeing deer, we only saw one on our last evening.
During our week at the cottage, we explored the Black Isle, the east coast north to John O'Groats, took a day trip to Orkney, visited distilleries, and spent a day on Skye.
If you are looking to explore the highlands from a comfortable base this is a perfect cottage.

Wonderful house, wonderful place

  • 5 out of 5
The house is very nice and very well provided. The rooms are wide and confortable, the furniture is really nice. We enjoyed specially the fire place and the kitchen, very well equipped, even bone china mugs, with lots of light and very roomy.
There is a huge garden with a hut in a tree that my kids enjoyed a lot!! There is also wooden furniture in the garden, but it was too cold for us outside to enjoy sitting out (especially if you come from Spain in August!!)
Sorroundings peaceful and quiet, the only neighbour, 500m away, really friendly and helpful. The owners were very helpful and friendly also. Astonishing landscape, great walks in the surroundings. Close enough to Inverness, Loch Ness, Glenn Affric...
Cons: Perhaps too much stuff in the kitchen, we couldn´t find a place to store our food. The hot water in the downstairs bathroom runs very noisily.
Pros: Everything. We enjoyed a lot our stay there, I would return doubtless and maybe I will.

Whilst staying in the Highlands, there are various outdoor sporting activities, fly fishing, clay pigeon shooting, golf, walking, stalking in season and walked up grouse, pheasant and duck shooting.

Loved by millions throughout the world, Golf is a game that was born on the links land of eastern Scotland, for over 600 years the Scots have natured the game and today, as it has always done, gold is regarded as the game of the people.

The popularity of golf was so much so that during the mid-15th century when Scotland was preparing to defend itself against an English invasion, the population’s enthusiastic pursuit of golf led to the neglect of military training such as archery practice.

This unwanted distraction led to the Scottish parliament of King James II to ban golf, the ban lasted from 1457 until it was lifted in 1502.

Today Scotland is regarded as the home of golf and has almost 500 courses many of which are survivors from the very earliest.

Other Activities: shooting

Golf: Nairn Golf Club, this Traditional Scottish Golf Links Course was created form a wilderness of whins and heather and talents of professional and amateur alike. Nairn’s truly remarkable feature is that from every hole you can see the Moray Firth and the golden colouring and changing lights of the Black Isle. Even more extraordinary – only too easily you can strike the ball into the sea on every one of the first seven!

Tain Golf Club in Ross-shire, a traditional Scottish Highland links course designed by Old Tom Morris, situated 9 miles south of Dornoch and 31 miles north of Inverness. Our Championship length links enjoys spectacular views over mountains and sea and benefits from a sheltered climate, which allows favourable golfing conditions for most of the year. With our 3rd hole rated as one of the best 18 links holes in Scotland and our 17th acknowledged as one of the top 18 holes designed by Old Tom Morris, we believe that Tain offers one of the finest settings and challenges for a round of golf.

Inverness Golf Club, situated one mile from the city centre and only six miles from the airport, provides an excellent test of golf for all levels of player and a great alternative to the traditional links courses. Visiting golfers are most welcome to play the 6,256 yards par 69 course. There are two Bars and a Restaurant. Visitor locker rooms are available with shower facilities provided for both males and females. Handicap certificates are required.

Ski: Aviemore is the outdoor capital of the Cairngorms. It firstly developed as a ski resort and both the Cairngorm and Lecht areas have a range of pistes suitable for snowboarding and skiing. Being surrounded by the Monadhliath and Grampian mountains there are plenty of Munros, hillwalks, climbing opportunities and low level walks to suit all abilities. The rivers in the area provide excellent opportunities for kayaking and canoeing trips. There are a wealth of outdoor companies based in Aviemore for equipment hire or courses.
