Yiannis Cottage is situated in a small village in W. Crete, set above Spilia's Myrtidiotissa Church, with it's magnificent painted interior. Indulge yourself around your own beautiful private Pool, listening to bird-song and enjoying the scent of fragrant flowers.

We would like to inform you about some changes we have made this year in

our property, in order to have better and higher quality stay.

We provided some space to young artists to express themselves through art.

We brought even closer the nature to you and your table with more fruits

and vegetables from our garden and fresh eggs from a new small hennery a

few meters away from the Cottage.. You can collect vegetables and eggs by yourself!!!

With respect to the architecture of the area we have upgraded the facilities of the Cottage giving more emphasis to a larger bathroom & shower area.

Yiannis Cottage is provided with the special sign of the Greek Tourist Organization (EOT-1354121504) which secures the quality level of all services, terms and conditions our guests have the privilege to enjoy during their stay.

Enjoy the pleasures of the local tavernas, or eat by your Pool on warm balmy evenings.

A short distance away from the Villa (100m away) is situated a Spring and the dense vegetation of extremely high Plane Trees, that are centuries old.

Under the trees is a very pleasant and locally run taverna offering traditional food.

Whether you are looking for a totally relaxing, or a more adventurous holiday, you will find that Yiannis Cottage is the perfect base.

Welcome pack.: A welcome pack will await you in the Cottage, consisting of traditional fresh organic products.

Wonderful time

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had a wonderful time at Yiannis cottage. From the moment we arrived until we left we were treated like one of the family without being intrusive always checking everything was ok and leaving us local fresh eggs for our breakfast. The cottage was perfect for us and we swam in our own private pool almost every day.

You have the real feel in being in a local village away from the main tourist areas. Most evenings we took the 5 mins drive to the sea front at Kolimbari where there is an excellent choice of restaurants for our evening meal.

Many thanks to Yiannis and Manolis for providing us with a first class holiday on the island of Crete.

4th Visit to Yiannis Cottage

  • 5 of 5

It is such a good holiday coming to Yiannis Cottage that we don't look anywhere else now. Yiannis and Katerina live next door and their small holding farm provided us with fresh eggs which made some superb omeletes. the fresh oranges that Yiannis brought us made the freshest Orange juice ever. we didn't see much of Manolis this time as we know our way round now but he is always there at the end of the phone for any help or enquiries.

The new walk in shower installed for this year is a lovely addition to the property.

If you come to stay our suggestions are sunset at a taverna on Fallasarna Beach and Waves on the Rock Taverna at Ravdoucha.

We had 2 exciting nights in the village taverna cheering Greece into the last 16 and disappointment when they went out. We are good friends now with the staff at the village taverna.

The airport was still fairly well organised despite the new terminal building work going on. this year didn't beat our record of 20 minutes from the plane wheels touching the runway to driving off in the hire car.

We will be back again in 2015 & our eldest son and his girlfriend are also hoping to visit next year.

Many thanks again Manolis, Yiannis & Katerina

I wish I lived here

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed 2.5 weeks at the cottage and we loved every minute of it. We wish we lived there. The yard is amazing and we spent every evening gazing at the mountains and the pool. Yiannis and family are very, very, VERY nice and are always around to help (they live nearby). They even bring you fresh-picked delicious things from the garden which we happily ate (as well as some olive oil and Raki). The house itself is pretty complete with plenty of chairs, beach chairs, beach umbrellas, towels, wifi, full kitchen, laundry, and plenty of cute things to look at. Cleaning is twice a week. If you stay longer than 14 days they include a rental car in the package.

You are very close to grocery stores and gas (1km). You are also close to so many amazing beaches (20 minutes to Falasarna, Balos, etc.), and many more beaches close by. There is hiking, caves, and cute towns to enjoy. So much fresh food.

On that note,(esp If you are driving) I would suggest the "gorge tavernas" in Deliana, and the neighborhood tavernas is also pretty good. The "dimitricara" (not sure how to spell) tavernas in Kolymbari is also nice (they make everything themselves even the wine and cheese), and we loved the salads at a place called something like "apetecha" (its on the waterfront) in Kissamos.

There is so much to do nearby. You could also just sit in the pool and be happy, too.

I would suggest this place to couples or small families, and I would HIGHLY recommend the cottage to anyone who would listen (especially couples).

A perfect place for 2

  • 5 of 5

First of all: We had two wonderful weeks at Yiannis cottage.

Everything was exactly as advertized - mostly even better. The cottage is well maintained, all rooms are air-conditioned. The well tended garden was full of flowers and offered sunny places for breakfast and shady trees for dinner.

We found the cottage to be a perfect starting point for our hiking trips and beach visits along the west coast. Manolis' recommendations led us to beautiful beaches (e.g. Falassarna) and excellent taverns for fish and traditional cretan cooking (our favourites: Gramvoussa tavern, Diktina). We were not able to visit all of his special places, as the private pool was a tempting place for lazy hours as well.

We like to thank Katerina, Yiannis and Manolis for the warm welcome and the cordial hospitality during our stay. It was a great pleasure to meet you.

Yiannis cottage is recommended for everybody looking for relaxing holidays in beautiful surroundings in a familiar atmosphere. You will not be disappointed.

Our second visit to Yianni's cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is our second visit to Yianni’s cottage in Spilia (see our review September 2011 by Glyn T) and once again we were delighted with our holiday choice.

Manolis, Yianni and Katerina made us so very welcome, and Yianni generously kept us supplied with his garden vegetables and fruit. When we arrived, the barrel of red wine, the bottle of raki, the bottle of olive oil, and the breakfast provisions were all waiting for us in the kitchen of this cosy cottage, and the welcoming swimming pool in the garden provided a cool refreshing dip.

If you are staying for 2 weeks or more, Manolis includes a small rental car as part of the package, and you are met at Chania airport by the rental company representative (note that the car has total comprehensive insurance meaning that you do not have to worry about any Excess in case of damage). A car is essential when staying in this small village. Bring your SatNav with Greek maps loaded. It really helps you to find your way around Crete.

We love the peace and quiet of Spilia and we love Yianni’s cottage. It’s an ideal location for both beach access and mountain walks, and the nearby fishing harbour of Kolymbari (10 minutes drive) has an excellent selection of tavernas. Our favourites are Edem and Kyma along the front. We found the very popular Palio Arhontiko to be expensive and non-traditional. If you are looking for a really traditional experience, drive up to Drakona in the mountains and visit Dounias Taverna. We recommend a round trip drive up through the gorge to Theriso, then round to Drakona (have lunch there) and back down to Chania. Beautiful scenery all the way. Also we can highly recommend a walk through the gorge of Deliana which is a short drive from Spilia, and is well sign-posted locally.

A stay at Yianni’s cottage provides everything that we require from a holiday. Together with the Cretan sunshine, what more could you want?

"It must be the most beautiful place in the world"

  • 5 of 5

This is what our 8 year old daughter said when she saw the place for the first time and when we were leaving after spending there 10 days she still hasn't changed her mind :) And the rest of us could easily agree with her.

The cottage is beautiful, quiet and very convenient. It has got everything what you need. The description is very accurate, the property was clean, well maintained, everything looked even better than on the pictures.

The cottage is situated in a small village away from the touristy places and yet close enough to major attractions so that getting there in a car is not a problem. Before you plan your sightseeing trips be sure to talk to Manolis (the owners' son) who told us about great places to see and restaurants that we would had never found without his help.

We would definately recommend this place!

Spila is located on the edge of the plain of Chania 2 km from Kolymvari, 22km from Chania city-centre and 35 km from the airport of Chania. The village is near the junction with the national road which allows access to Chania in less than 20 minutes. Close by, there are 1 small mini market and a bigger one (2 minutes drive) where you will find provisions; fresh bread, fruit and vegetables and indispensable articles. You can also order by phone and the owner of the mini market can bring anything you need at the Cottage!!!

The village of Spilia is named after the Cave of Ai-Yiannis Erimiti which is to be found in the west part of the village on the hill above the Villa (1 km away), on an impressive site of great historical importance and exceptional views of the olives groves, the sea and the White Mountains.

The Cave of St John the Hermit looks like an oblong arcade. Its length is about 135 meters and the scientists believe that it is essentially a prehistoric river bed.

The history of the cave is associated with the ascetic life of the hermit John, since he lived there – according to researchers – in the 6th century.

In charming Kolymvari (5 minutes by car) you will find the Iera Moni Gonias Monastery and the Orthodox Academy of Crete.

In the village there are many pleasant tavernas, restaurants and kafenions, a post office, a medical center, a supermarket and bank / ATM’s.

The area is famous for its fish, landed fresh daily from the harbour, the fragrant wine of the Kissamos area and the awarded olive oil with it’s low acidity rate.

Spilia village is ideally located for you to visit the most important coasts of Crete, the well-known Falassarna with the immense sandy beach, the ancient town and the enchanting lagoon of Elafonisi, attractions awarded by international organizations for their clearness and the multi coloured sand formations. In the wider area is set the beautiful lagoon of Balos at Gramvousa where you can enjoy all the tints of blue and green.

Night-life, beach bars, wind-surfing and other extreme sports can be found in abundance all in the Platanias area which is not far away.

The famous Samaria Gorge, other wonderful Gorges & walks in the countryside are a delight
