We rented the "Queen Anne" for a 10 day winter break in February 2015. It is in a great location (King William Historic District) within a few blocks of the Riverwalk. Many nice restaurants are within walking distance and the downtown loop of the Riverwalk is a 20 minute walk. The house has been worked on a great deal to bring it up to date, while maintaining its original charm.
On the negative side we arrived at the home to find two rear doors unlocked, food left in the refrigerator and dirty dishes in the dishwasher. Closer inspection revealed wet clothing (including personal items) in the washing machine, and a purse containing prescription medications in a bedroom closet.
Multiple attempts to contact the "owner" during our stay were futile. The email address we had received just days prior to our departure for SA proved to be no longer valid. The telephone number given was to a phone that was never answered on many attempts and offered no voice mail. We felt this was an unacceptable practice. Two separate neighbors identified themselves as "part-owners" of the house, but neither of their names were the same as the one on communications we had received via our VRBO booking of the house.
We were sorry we had not looked at the reviews of the property after we booked it three months prior. Reviews posted after we booked would have given a clue to problems we might encounter once we were in the house.
The house is quite spacious and nice. It's in a great neighborhood with many good restaurants in walking distance. The backyard is shared with other apartments and everyone seems to get their mail and service calls to the front door so it's not super private
Our stay was great. We arrived around 2PM on the day of our check-in date to find the owner, Kristin, cleaning up from the previous customer. She was so nice and courteous. Honestly, the house did not look dirty at all. She allowed us to move all of our stuff in and even left us alone for an hour to get ready before we went out on the town. She then came back to finish cleaning up while we where out. Overall the house was great! It was very large and clean and had a nice, eclectic feel. I would definitely recommend this home to anyone who wants to be close to downtown, but not in the middle of all of the hustle and bustle of downtown. I would rent again if I return to SA!
filthy...the carpet (especially in the master bedroom) was so dirty that my baby socks turned into gray within 2 mins stepping on it. There were cockroaches in the kitchen and backyard. Given it is an old house, I gave it benefit of doubt, but the owner might be able to change (or just throw away) the brownish carpets in the bedrooms.
Other than dirty, the house overall was located in a very convenient neighborhood, and the daughter of landlord was very friendly.
We came to San Antonio for our son's graduation from BMT at Lackland AFB. We decided it would be nice for him to hang out with us in a spacious place rather than have to hang out in a small hotel room.
PROS: 1)The owner was VERY nice to work with. 2)This home is adorable and spacious with tall ceilings. Our son loved having this space to stretch out, relax, and watch TV/sleep. 3)The location was only about a mile from the Riverwalk. Everything else seemed to be no more than 20 minutes away. 4)There's an amazing Mexican restaurant two blocks away, "Taco Haven".
CONS: 1)BRING EAR PLUGS if you want to sleep. The trains run ALL night long tooting their whistles throughout the night. 2)Some of the homes in the neighborhood have been updated but a lot have not. My son even made a comment about the neighborhood when we brought him there for the first time; a little embarrassing, but you forget about it once you drive up to this lovely looking home and go inside. 3) Although it is decorated nicely and seemed clean, we did notice that it really wasn't all that clean. The wood floors are a bit rough and I was a little concerned to walk barefooted. There was a layer of dust underneath the bed that you can't miss seeing; the fan blades were really dusty; the items on the shelves in the kitchen seemed a bit greasy/grimy; and the worst thing was finding cockroaches (or as the owner called them, "Waterbugs", which is the same thing). We didn't notice them until two days before we were scheduled to leave. We ended up leaving a day early because we couldn't handle the roaches; the owner was very understanding of our decision and had a call into an exterminator so hopefully that has been resolved. 4) There is a nice pond in the backyard but we didn't feel comfortable going outside since it is a shared area with the owners, but it was nice to look at. 5) We didn't feel secure in the home as there were some unsecured windows. The stairs in the house led up to a room that is closed off by plywood covering the opening. We didn't know if someone else lived in another portion of the house or not. The house was for sale and we happened to be home when a realtor dropped by to show potential buyers the house. Had we not been there, I have a feeling that they would have come through the house. The owner asked them to leave, which they did.
Although the owners were great to work with, if we were to come back to San Antonio, we would not choose to stay in this home again.
So surprised on how comfortable and charming this home was. Our daughter graduated Air Force bout camp and we wanted a home environment along with a family gathering place for 15 people. We had family on the front porch, living room watching football and in the backyard with the beautiful pond made for great photo opportunities. Highly recommend
