Located in the high oak grasslands of southern Arizona, at an altitude of nearly 5000 feet, Heartland Guesthouse lies on Heartland Ranch near the long-ago community of Canelo between the west slope of the Huachuca Mountains and the Canelo Hills. It is 20 miles from Sonoita and 15 miles from Sierra Vista through Ft Huachuca.
In addition to the Local Attractions, Activities and Services listed later, all within 30-45 minutes of Heartland Guesthouse, this area is also a world-renowned location for birding and hiking. In fact, impressive birding can be done from the comfort of the Guesthouse dining table, and hiking trails abound just outside the Ranch's main gate.
Whether you are interested in birding, hiking, history, geography, wineries, excellent food, mining, caving, old Spanish Missions, the West, cowboys, horse riding or fine arts and crafts, you will find more than enough to fill your days either immediately surrounding the Guesthouse or within a 30-minute to 2-hour drive. Sonoita and Patagonia, with their wineries, restaurants, horse tours, shops and prime birding locations, are 30-45 minutes away. Sierra Vista, 45 minutes away through historic Fort Huachuca, is the 'Hummingbird Capital of the U.S.' and also boasts excellent hiking trails, historic sites and fabulous birding, especially at Ramsey Canyon Preserve and the San Pedro National Conservation Area. Tombstone, the 'Town Too Tough To Die', is less than 1 hour away. Bisbee, just over an hour away, was once a booming copper mining town. Today this charming, historic artists' colony with its excellent antique shops, restaurants and art galleries also treats visitors to Copper Queen Mine Tours and the Smithsonian Museum of Mining. Karchner Caverns, one of the most spectacular of the world's living caves, is just an hour from the Guesthouse. Tubac, with its art galleries, fine restaurants and historic Spanish Presidio, and Tumacacori National Park, once a Spanish Mission, draw visitors not only for their architectural and historic interest but also for their beautiful surroundings. A bit farther away, but well within day trip limits from the Guesthouse, are the restored John Slaughter Ranch, dating from the 1880's, and adjacent San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge with its gorgeous permanent and migratory birds; and San Xavier Mission, the 'White Dove of the Desert' whose incredible 17th-century murals were restored by the Sistine Chapel restorers. Old Tucson, a western movie set turned family adventure park, and the nearby Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, a world-class natural-setting zoological park, are also within a 2-hour drive of the Guesthouse. Heartland Guesthouse is truly ideally located for whatever your interests are, and the property manager delights in recommending 'The Best' experiences possible to our Guests.
Enjoy Heartland Guesthouse's superb Western hospitality for a truly memorable vacation!
