Overview

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday apartment in Lauterbrunnen - Chalet Horner

British-Swiss owner, 45 years experience renting in Lauterbrunnen Valley

The chalet is in the middle of the village but set back from the street in its own 1/2 acre garden.

There are 3 hotels with restaurants 1/3 minutes walk from the chalet. The bus to Stechelberg/Schilthorn cable car is just accross the street.

A baker, butcher, dairy, Internet corner and laundrette are all within 1 minutes walk. On the way to the station are a Coop shop, banks and post office. The stations to Wengen/Kleine Scheidegg (famous for the longest men's World Cup downhill ski race) and to Murren are 4 minutes walk.

For the younger at heart, there is a pub/disco nearby.

All flats have a satellite TV and parking space. WiFi is available for a small fee.

Winter sports: skiing, snowboarding, cross-country, winter hiking, tobogganing, skating, and tandem paragliding.

Summer sports: hiking, mountain climbing, swimming, mountain biking, river rafting, fishing, windsurfing and paragliding.

Interlaken is 20 minutes away where there is the new Mystery Theme Park.

Winter Resort details: The Jungfrau Skipass covers both sides of the valley and also the Grindelwald ski lifts. Under the towering mountains of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau there are 125 miles of ski runs suitable for beginners to advanced skiers. Some slopes extend to 7 miles. There is a choice of 45 mountain railways, cablecars and skilifts. Also 60 miles of well-prepared hiking paths. There is a special pass for non-skiers.

Summer details: Lauterbrunnen is an excellent starting point for trips to the Jungfraujoch (the highest railway and restaurant in Europe) and Schilthorn. There are also many miles of well signposted hiking trails. It is 8 miles from Interlaken, the town between the lakes of Brienz and Thun. There is a swimming-pool, tennis courts and mini-golf in the village. There are organised tours to the mountain huts on the Alp to see how they make cheese. The village has local lace-makeing and a Pottery.

A James Bond breakfast is served on the top of the Schilthorn made famous by the film 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'.

The chalet is 8 miles from the newly opened 'Jungfrau Park' in Interlaken. This is a theme park to suit all ages.

General Information: Lauterbrunnen is also easily reached by train from Zürich and Geneva airports. There are special Swiss rail concessions that can be bought in your own country. The rail service is excellent and a car is not really necessary.

Most restaurants in the village serve local Swiss food (also international food). Night-life is available in Wengen and Interlaken. In summer there are local concerts of Yodeling, local brass band, traditional dancing, flag-throwing and Alpenhorn.

An ideal place to stay

  • 5 out of 5
My husband and I rented the studio apartment at Chalet Horner for three nights in late September and it was perfect - close to the train station, main street and the grocery store and yet it was tucked away. The bathroom was clean and modern. The bedroom/living area was quite large and the kitchen provided us with everything we needed. We ate all of our breakfasts at the flat and appreciated the toaster! Before heading out for the day, we would take a moment and sit on our private patio, sipping our coffee and being awed by views of waterfalls, scenic mountainsides and snowy peaks. We also ate two relaxing suppers there, letting us relax and save money. Since returning home, we have told all our friends that they must visit the Lauterbrunnen Valley and stay at Chalet Horner. Thank you, Teresa, for providing us with a wonderful place to stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the very nice review. I am so glad you enjoyed your stay. The chalet's big advantage is the position in the village and it has the only big garden in Lauterbrunnen.

Beautiful setting!

  • 5 out of 5
The studio apartment where my husband, adult daughter and I stayed had tremendous views of the falls and the lovely rose garden that Theresa, the owner, maintained. There was ample space for the three of us and our luggage. The furnishings are a bit dated, but we didn't spend much time in the room. That's not why we went to Lauterbrunnen. We hiked, traveled by train to different towns and enjoyed the beauty of the valley and the mountains. We ate our breakfast on the patio looking at the waterfalls.
Having the kitchenette was helpful, as we made dinner two of our four nights. We wanted to sample local cuisine and ate in Lauterbrunnen and Kleine Scheidegg the other nights. The grilled bratwurst sold at the butcher was delicious!
Everything you need is very centrally located. It was a short walk from the train station and convenient to the grocery store, laundromat and tourist info center.
Theresa greeted us upon our arrival and provided good advice for traveling to the "Top of Europe", as well as treats and a guidebook to reference.
With so much to see, we may have to return, and we would stay at Chalet Horner again.

Unbelievable View!

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed at Chalet Horner for 4 nights. As soon as you step off the train and walk up the street you see the magnificent mountains and waterfalls. Teresa welcomed us warmly upon our arrival even though we arrived an hour prior to when we told her we'd be coming. Teresa had a nice bowl of yummy snacks waiting in our room. We enjoyed being able to make our own meals in the kitchenette. Everything we needed was within walking distance so a car is not needed. By far, the best part of our trip was sitting on the balcony and just enjoying the unbelievable view. Quite an experience that we will not forget. We highly recommend staying at Chalet Horner if you want to visit this beautiful part of the world.

The perfect accomodation in a magical place!

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed at Chalet Horner for 4 nights. It is a cosy, comfortable and well maintained chalet!

Pros:
- the view! When you peer out of the windows, you can see Staubbach falls! You can sit out on the balcony and just admire the view while sipping on a hot chocolate!
- welcome pack of biscuits, swiss chocolates, coffee and teas is very thoughtful, especially after a long day of travelling!
- kitchenette including fridge and stove but no microwave. I enjoyed the freedom of preparing our own meals
- less than 5 mins walk to lauterbrunnen station
- various walking trails close to the chalet
- strong and fast wifi for a small fee

The chalet is highly recommended!! The view and little town is just magical! Lauterbrunnen is the perfect outdoor getaway. We were lucky to experience sunshine as well as snow during our stay there. We hope to return again in the future!

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay. Unfortunately this apartment only has a very small kitchenette so there is no room for a microwave. Where possible the apartments have microwaves.

Clean, Convenient, Kind and well stocked

  • 5 out of 5
The flat we rented was exactly what we needed. Two adults and 2 children fit well into the space, the adults in the bedroom, the children in a pull out sofa that was so comfortable we are planning on buying the same brand! The owner provided a few snacks and things which we appreciated such as some small butter packets and hot chocolate mixes. We cooked dinner in the flat which was a great savings to us. Theresa was helpful with suggestions and an extra converter and the directions she gave were easy to follow. We all highly recommend and the cost was very reasonable as well.

Great stay, beautiful location!!

  • 5 out of 5
Teresa and Chico(the cute puppy) are great hosts!! We had a the unit with 2 double beds and a sofa-pull out bed. The bed was comfortable and from our window we can see the famous waterfall! (I forgot the name, it starts with S) Teresa left us yummy chocolates and cheese and candy. I think we ate them all :)
There's a small charge for wifi, but it was well worth it for our 4 day stay.
The cows lived right beside us, for the first 20min we thought the cow bells were very cute. But after that it was getting loud. But that's what Swizerland is like!
On Friday evening, Teresa posted a sign on our door that there was a Folk Performance Night. Thanks to her, we had a really good time hearing Alp horns, traditional dancing and a demo on weaving. Very unique and definitely a highlight to our trip.
Thanks Teresa:)

Owner's Response: I am so glad you enjoyed your stay. Twice a year there are young cows in a field next door. They stay approximately 4 - 6 days each time so the disturbance is very short.
Chicco is always ready to greet guests and thinks everyone Comes to see him.
Hope to see you again once.
