About this property

Beach Front, Ocean Front Living, Affordable Price - Family Friendly

Pack your bags and treat yourself to total rest and relaxation at Casa Colibri (Humming Bird House) a lovely beach house situated at Costa Cumana one of Puerto Escondido's most exclusive communities.

This lovely architecturally designed home is literally on the golden sand beach which stretches for kilometers in either direction. Built for comfort and relaxation, Casa Colibri is beautifully decorated and landscaped, yet is family friendly. Call us today, its as simple as that!

Costa Cumana is an ecological beach resort just outside of Puerto Escondido.

Fronting directly on to the beach, Casa Colibri is the place to watch the waves, count the pelicans, enjoy the mantas that dance in the surf and 'ooh' and 'aah' at the dolphins and whales that make regular appearances. The beach is an active nesting area for turtles and if you are lucky you will get to see a 'nido' or turtle nursery as the baby turtle’s hatch and make their way to the sea.

Casa Colibri is a perfect rental for families with kids; girlfriends on 'retreat' or anyone who wants to escape the hustle & bustle of day-to-day life and soak up the sun, sleep in a hammock, sip margaritas in the pool or walk the beach at sunset. Our wonderful staff, Jaime, Flora and Mauricio will take great care of you!

Humming Bird House is great for families. The outdoor living space and dinning area allow you to soak up the heat whilst staying in the shade (and keeping an eye on your kids)! The kitchen is fully equipped and opens to the palapa so if you are cooking you can hang out with your friends & family. Our beautiful palapa is the heart of the home providing indoor/outdoor living. With a constant light breeze from the ocean, and two overhead fans this is a delightful space. Lounge on the comfy bancos, hang out in the hammock swing, watch the waves and count the dolphins!

The house comes with a large pool facing the beach, with a lovely shallow section perfect to hang out with babies and young children

The master bedroom is light and airy and sophisticated featuring a King-sized bed, lounge area and gorgeous onyx lighting . With an en-suite bathroom, plenty of closet space and a lovely private patio- which is perfect for morning coffee - this space is bound to please. Wake to the morning sun and sleep to the sound of the ocean. Patio doors open directly on to the ocean at the front and and on to the pool to the right.

The guest bedroom features two queen sized beds, a large closet and a safe. With its own private patio, and a great view of the beach, this is a relaxing space for your family or friends. With both air-conditioning and an overhead fan it is wonderfully cool on the those hot Mexican nights. The guest bathroom is cool and calming featuring plenty of cotton towels, and all the amenities you would expect.

The media or TV room is a multi-purpose space. By day it is a work space or TV room. There is a flat screen TV, Sky satellite, internet, DVD player, IPod Dock and space for two computers. With double doors at both ends, during the day you can open it up and make it part of the outdoors. At night it converts to another bedroom comfortably sleeping two adults and one child. With air-conditioning and an overhead fan this is a cool comfortable space at night.

All bedrooms have Sealy pillow top mattresses and 100% cotton sheets. Whilst the bedrooms and media room have air conditioning all of the rooms have ceilings fans - so you never get too hot! With two bedrooms in the main house (1 with a King, 1 with 2 Queen’s), a media room that can comfortably sleep two and a single bed that can be placed in any room as required there's space to spread out!

The kitchen is clean, bright, comfortable and functional - the owner is a foodie and always makes sure to leave the pantry with some of the basics you'll need for your stay - olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, sugar and some spices. Bottled water is provided, the fridge produces ice on demand, and there is a second fridge to hold all those important beverages you'll want to keep cold! Our housekeeper is a wonderful cook of local style food, she is available to cook at an extra cost, give us a call to find out more!

The pool deck provides both sun and shade. The pool is designed to be family friendly with a lovely shallow area for toddlers. The pool can be seen from everywhere in the palapa, so children can be in view but not underfoot. With sun loungers and hammocks and fabulous views of the ocean, this is where you'll spend much of your time soaking up the rays and enjoying a cold Corona.

The sunset bench is the perfect place to sit and sip aperos, snack on appies and watch the magnificent sunsets

Our staff is available during the day. Jaime takes care of the landscaping and pool, and Flora takes care of the house keeping, including your laundry, the dishes, and cleaning. They are both super sweet and helpful. There is a laundry room with a washer, dryer and iron - so no need to pack too much!

Our manager Mauricio is fluent in both English and Spanish and he and his team are available to ensure your stay is perfect offering first class concierge service. If you need something special, ask Mauricio he can help arrange:

Massages out on the patios
Manis and pedis
Yoga in the sun
Deep sea fishing

Lagoon kayaking tours

Whilst many people rarely leave the house, Casa Colibri is just 10 minutes from Zicatela beach and all that Puerto has to offer - surfing, deep sea fishing, bird watching, kayaking, and dolphin watching, sailing, and hiking.

Puerto is home to loads of good restaurants (everything from Japanese, Argentinean, Italian and of course Mexican) and oodles of fresh seafood. The local mercado is a lively authentic daily market with everything from food to flowers to artesania available; and the Adoquin and Zicatela offer up lots of shopping.

Whether you want to listen to the ocean waves at night, relax in the pool, entertain under the large palapa in the spacious living/dining room areas, enjoy the sun in the poolside lounge chairs, or watch the sunset over the ocean, Casa Colibri and owners Penny & Joe welcome you, your family and your friends to a vacation you won't forget!

Casa Colibri offers the perfect vacation mix – sunshine, sea, and sand in a luxurious, relaxing setting with all that Puerto has to offer just 10 minutes away. We invite you to come and discover this wonderful part of southern México. Welcome.

**During the winter months, often from November to the end of February the owners and their two small dogs, are in residence in the Casita Colibri on the back of the property. There is complete separation of the two spaces, and each has it's own pool. The owners are available and willing if asked to help guests plan activities and figure out how to get around, and to ensure all aspects of the house are in perfect working order, but are also happy to be completely ignored!

About the host

Host profile image
Penny & Joe have lived and worked all over the world. They are both educators and currently own and operate their own education business on Vancouver Island, Canada and in Miami, Florida . They first came to Puerto in 1995 and fell in love with the area. After searching high and low for a location to build their dream retirement home they found themselves back where they started in Puerto Escondido in 2008 and after buying land began building in 2010. It was really important to them to build a house that had enough space that visitors and renters could find privacy, but also wanted it to have the feeling of a home not a hotel. With elderly parents and grandchildren it had to be not only family friendly but easy to get around. Penny and Joe love escaping to the peace and quiet that Cumana offers, and particularly love being so close to nature – seeing turtles, dolphins, whales and rays up close on a regular basis is a real treat. They also love exploring the local area. Oaxaca is rich in culture and is the centre for artesania in Mexico. Equally important, particularly to Penny, is the food! She loves to cook and is enjoying exploring the markets and learning to cook with new ingredients. The abundance of fresh fruit, produce and seafood is a definite plus. The house is pet friendly – we wouldn’t dream of going anywhere without our two dogs Teddy and Cooper, who have come to love the beach and playing in the waves as much as we do. Penny & Joe both speak some Spanish and are working hard at improving their fluency. Their staff Jaime, Flora and manager Mauricio who take care of the house and guests have been great at helping them with this goal

Why they chose this property

Puerto Escondido (Hidden Port) is a unique location on the Pacific Coast in that it is an authentic Mexican town where tourism has developed slowly and organically. There are no ‘all you can eat’ inclusive resorts or high rise hotels. It is the destination of folks who are interested in the environmental activities the area has to offer (bird watching, hiking, climbing, kayaking etc), the surfing - Puerto has one of the most famous surf beaches in the world, the culture and the food. The town has all the fun amenities and activities you would want on vacation, but at the same time it is a relaxed and restorative place. We found Puerto in 1995 and are so happy to have a home here. There is so much to do, so many beautiful beaches and just enough foreigners with out feeling like you live in an expat enclave. There is a great mix of North Americans, Europeans and folks from across South America. It is great place to re-charge your batteries, but if you are up for adventure there are lots of places to visit from Oaxaca City to Hutaulco to the villages around Pinotepa Nacional or the coffee plantations in the Sierra mountains that frame Puerto. Oaxacan's also have to be the nicest people in all of Mexico!

What makes this property unique

The endless sea vistas, the peace and quiet, the privacy all make Casa Colibri unique. Enjoy a siesta on the patio, or stargazing at night.
