About Julie & Jory Kaplan

Jory & Julie Kaplan: Jory and I work in the medical field in Redding, CA. We escape to Ashland as often as we can to relax. We enjoy quiet time and travel with our children. We love to walk around Lithia Park and go to the theatre with our family. We cherish older homes and are very excited to own a 1900 Historic Ashland Home, and to share it with you.

Julie & Jory Kaplan purchased this house in 2011

Why Julie & Jory Kaplan chose Ashland, OR

We hope you enjoy our lovely Victorian Vacation home! This home has drawn our attention for years, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was called the 'Coleman-Mulit' home, and was built in 1900 by Mr. John Coleman.

The Register states, 'John Coleman purchased this lot from G.W. Gillette in 1899 and soon thereafter the local newspaper noted, 'John Coleman will immediately build on his Church Street lot. He plans a substantial residence and foundations are already underway.' {Ashland Tidings, 22-Jun-1899, 3:1} Coleman, operated a canning plant in Ashland with his brother. He sold this house in 1904. In 1906 Lloyd and Gertrude Mulit purchased the property, which they retained as their residence until 1924. The Coleman-Mulit House is a large two-story vernacular ell with a projecting front gable, accented by a full-height projecting bay. Modest Queen-Anne detailing is evident in the complex form, eave bracketry and the 'pent' roof'

What makes this house unique

Luxurious amenities throughout this home. Advantages of renting an entire home:: Unlike a B&B or hotel, you have an entire Victorian home to yourself! Cook in the full kitchen or walk around the corner to enjoy amazing restaurants and attractions.

Such a nice place to stay in Asland

  • 5 out of 5
After staying in Ashland vacation rentals in 10 different theatre district locations, the Victorian Secret rates among the best. Close to the shops, Shakespeare festival, and Lithia Park, you get back in your car out of choice not necessity. The rooms are nicer than pictured, charming and well appointed. The kitchen has everything one needs if cooking elaborate meals is your thing on vacation. The matress toppers are soft and luxurious although personally I like a very firm sleeping surface. And one other possible nitpick is getting in and out of the upstairs claw foot tub. I can imagine this could present a problem for an elderly guest, but fortunately there is a walk in shower downstairs. Overall, the Victorian Secret represents good value for the price, and I'm confident that staying here will enhance the quality of your experience in Ashland.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your kind review. We hope you can return when it is not so cold. After you left, the pipes froze and the entire town was in desperate need for plumbers! Our place got flooded in the kitchen and the shed. Luckily, we have Siskiyou Property Management on the job! Whew! They inspected our home, rescued it from danger, and repaired the pipes right away. Just wanted to let you know that you narrowly avoided some wet feet in the morning. ;-) Thank you again for being wonderful guests.

Wonderful

  • 5 out of 5
My wife and I go to Ashland, OR. twice a year for the plays and fresh air. We have stayed in many hotels and B&Bs. Our weekend at the Victorian Secret was incredible. It is a lovely, well appointed home with a wonderful balance of comfort and convenience. (Just one short block from downtown.) The owners’ attention to detail helped make this weekend special. The room colors and furnishings instilled calm and relaxation. This welcoming home also offered modern amenities. The tree shaded property came with gentle deer visitors.

Downtown Ashland with all the quaint shops, spectacular Lithia Park, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, were all truly a minute stroll away.

My wife and I highly recommend the Victorian Secret for a romantic getaway. Enjoy your visit. We surely did.

Owner's Response: We are so happy you enjoyed your stay, and experienced such relaxing calm. You two work so hard and really deserved the much-needed get-away.

We really loved the photo you texted us with the ice cream scooper. ;-) You two were absolutely wonderful guests/friends. Please return again and again. <3

Perfect House! Perfect Location!

  • 5 out of 5
We could not have had a more perfect place to stay for our 5 days in Ashland. The Victorian Secret is a beautiful, comfortable home with a great kitchen (we cooked most meals) ,nice places to sit and talk over the plays we had seen, comfy beds (though a little tall for us short people), and a very warm, hospitable owner to deal with.

The house was just as described: clean, beautifully decorated (fun artwork!), well equipped and very comfortable for 4 people---all wrapped up in a perfect location. I will definitely recommend this house to friends and relatives and we are already trying to pin down a date for next year's visit to Ashland.

This was our second visit to Ashland and once again we were very pleased with the performances that we saw (3 Shakespeares and "My Fair Lady" which had to be the best production that any of us had seen. Terrific!!! We had been concentrating on the Shakespeare plays, but now we plan to broaden our perspective because of the quality of that "oldie but goodie."

We didn't venture from Ashland on this trip---just enjoyed the nice shops, the 1st Friday Art Walk, walks in Lithia Park and even a local movie. We also enjoyed tasty dinners in Marconi's and Omar's, two local restaurants.

We loved watching the four deer that visited our yard frequently---it was fun to see them nibbling the chestnuts in the front yard and the apples from the backyard and just lolling around anyplace they wanted.

Thanks Julie and Jory. We'll be back.

Owner's Response: Hi Nana & Joel,
We are so pleased to hear that you had such a wonderful time. We love those deer too. They are such a nice family. The Fall is the best time for them because there is something for them to munch on in the front and the back yard.

Did you notice the step-stools to climb up in the beds? We put those there for easy climbing ;-) The memory foam topper does make the beds a bit tall, but you can remove them if you don't like memory foam, or find the beds to be too tall. Also, it seems that in the summer, sometimes memory foam gets too hot for some people. That's why we chose the toppers, so they can be peeled off if they are too hot.

We hope you return again and again. You were such wonderful guests!

Take care,
Julie & Jory

Time Stood Still

  • 5 out of 5
We stayed at The Victorian Secret last Fall for our anniversary. What a peaceful getaway, and a relaxing stay in Ashland. We delighted in the little details of the home, the amenities were wonderful and the coffee superb. We read the address on the bag and headed out for a walking adventure to find the coffee shop to buy some for home. Julie's art displayed throughout the home, is beautiful! The grounds, the furnishings, comfortable beds, bath and sitting areas, everything, just right...and the home is very clean and well maintained. So many little ways that Julie and Jory have poured their heart into making this a wonderful place to relax while time stands still.
