Overview

Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday villa in Fayence - Bastidon des Oliviers

5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, sleeps 10.

Bastidon des Oliviers is set in over an acre of terraced olive grove with a spectacular infinity pool, enjoying glorious views over the surrounding countryside. It is less than ten minutes walk from the hilltop village of Claviers, near Bargemon. A secluded location, yet within easy access of the Côte d’Azur resorts. It is one hour to Nice, St Tropez and the Gorges du Verdon. The nearest beaches at St Raphael and Frejus are 40 minutes away.

The large, split level property comprises a self-contained three bedroom villa on the upper level and an independent two bedroom apartment on the lower level, ideal for two families sharing. The villa and apartment can interconnect through the large utility room.

The main villa comprises, on the ground floor, a large living and dining room opening onto the main terrace, a fully fitted oak kitchen, a twin bedroom, a very spacious bathroom with a full size bath with shower and a washbasin, a separate WC and a shower room. On the upper floor there is an additional twin bedroom, a double bedroom and washroom with WC. The upper floor also opens onto a terrace with lovely views towards Claviers village.

On the lower level, the apartment comprises a spacious living and dining room with a curtained off archway through to a twin bedroom, a separate double bedroom, a kitchen fitted with oak units and a shower room with a shower cubicle, washbasin and WC.

The Villa Grounds: The property is set in its own terraced olive grove in a peaceful location, offering splendid views from all points over the surrounding hills and the villages of Claviers and Bargemon. The villa and grounds are South facing and enjoy maximum day long sunshine throughout the year.

A lovely silk tree provides natural shade for summer dining on the terrace in front of the villa, and there is also a covered patio in front of the apartment on the lower level. Both dining areas have gas barbecues and benefit from gorgeous views over the surrounding area.

The large overflow pool (11m x 4m), pool terrace and extensive private gardens are available for the enjoyment of all guests. The poolside is fully equipped with garden furniture and parasols. There is an attractive balustrade at each side of the pool and there is a child safety alarm for the pool. There is also a gate between the villa and the pool. Similarly there is a fence with a gate to the olive grove and terraced land.

A quiet road leads directly from the grounds to Claviers village, about a 10 minute walk away.

The Local Area: Claviers is located in a beautiful area of The Var, boasting some of the finest scenery Provence has to offer. The countryside is predominantly wooded hillsides dotted with picturesque, perched villages and interspersed with luxuriant valleys and deep gorges sparkling with fast flowing rivers and crystalline rock pools. The Claviers area has all of this, plus mile after mile of pine and olive groves, vineyards, châteaux and villages untouched by the passing of time. Quite incredible when you appreciate how close it is to the sophisticated coast.

There are numerous interesting nearby villages. Seillans and Bargemon have both been voted amongst the most attractive villages in France but in our view all the local villages are very attractive and worth a visit in their own right. Other villages include Callas, unspoilt and typical of the area, Fayence, the largest and busiest with a lovely viewpoint and famous gliding club and Chateaudouble, perched on the edge of it's gorge.

The Cote d'Azur: The Cote d'Azur has been known since the early nineteenth century as Europe’s leading playground. As a holiday destination it is unsurpassed in the world, offering a beautiful stretch of coastline backed by the jagged peaks of the Alps, superbly maintained top class resorts, magnificent promenades and gardens, as well as a plethora of historic towns and ancient hilltop villages amid fabulous countryside and with an exceptional climate, cuisine and wine. The coastline is an ever-changing series of glimmering bays interspersed with rugged rocky peninsulas and dramatic cliffs falling straight into the sea. The coastal towns are renowned the world over. Cannes is a 45 minute drive from the villa, Nice and St. Tropez one hour and St. Raphael 35 minutes.

The coastal drive on the from La Napoule to St. Raphael is full of dramatic scenery backed by the red craggy mountains of the Esterel National Park. It is here you will find our nearest coastal beaches (35-40 minutes drive).

About Jill McQueen

We (Jill and Ray) bought Les Chenes (property Ref 6350) as our permanent residence in 1994. We have been renting the property out as a holiday home since 2002 when we moved into another house which we had built near Seillans. We bought Bastidon des Oliviers (property ref 9397) in 1998 with a view to renting it out as a rental home. We live permanently near Seillans and actively manage our properties ourselves so they are always maintained to a high standard and we are on hand to solve any problems that may arise during the course of the rental season. When renting holiday homes for ourselves we have found that it can be a big advantage to have the owners on hand.

Jill McQueen purchased this villa in 1998

Why Jill McQueen chose Fayence

We fell in love with the area as soon as we first explored it as it is very beautiful, quieter than the coastal resorts and yet has easy access to the Cote d'Azur. It is just over half an hour's drive to the coast at St Raphael/Frejus. The main reason for our choice of Bastidon des Oliviers was the location of the villa within walking distance of the village of Claviers and the fabulous situation. The property is located in an acre and a half of terraced olive grove which has beautiful views over the surrounding hills and the villages of Claviers and Bargemon.

What makes this villa unique

The property is conveniently located for access to the village and yet is very secluded and quiet, which is not always the case for houses located within walking distance to the village. There are amazing views from both the villa and the apartment, which are quite separate, and the infinity pool is particularly spectacular. Looking in one direction you can see the village of Claviers and in the other, Bargemon. Our land is totally private with no overlooking houses and a quiet path leads from it to the village. Claviers is a lovely quiet village, virtually unchanged from it's medieval past and yet has all the conveniences you may require and a choice of bars and restaurants. Bargemon is a much larger village with a beautiful shaded square with numerous bars and restaurants.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time at the villa. We were not expecting so many hills. It was a challenge that we enjoyed. We visited les Gorges de Verdon on our bikes, leaving from Combs. We also visited a lot of the surroundings, Bargemon, Seillans, Mons, Ste-Maxime, etc. On the last Friday we ate at the restaurant Les Tables Rondes in Bargemon, and we enjoyed a nice meal. It worth recommending to your future guests. We did not know that part of France.

We enjoyed your property which is well equipped and even used the pool.

Beautiful

  • 5 out of 5
We hired the villa and the appartment together, and as a result enjoyed lots of space, complete privacy, and a beautiful sense of isolation and peace. The village is only a short walk (5-10 minutes) up the hill, and there is a bakery, a cafe and a pizzeria there. We had a fantastic time, as we were specifically looking for somewhere idealic, peaceful and private, and we got all that in spades. Very happy!!

wonderful holiday!

  • 5 out of 5
We have just spent an amazing week at this lovely villa and look forward to returning there sometime in the future. The villa is beautiful, roomy and well equipped, the pool is spectacular and the views from the terrace and the pool are amazing. We really appreciated the beauty and privacy of Bastidon des Oliviers and miss the marvellous pool and wandering into Claviers to collect our fresh breakfast from the boulangerie or to eat in the restaurant in the evening. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. The villa is well placed for visiting attractions and we had lovely days out at the Gorges du Verdon, Cannes and Monaco, we also spent wonderfully lazy days enjoying the pool and the terraces. All in all, a fabulous holiday - thank you very much Jill and Ray for sharing this lovely villa with us! J Chandler

Spring in Fayence

  • 5 out of 5
just returned from a fabulous holiday in Bastildon des Olivilers, four couples in the villa and apartment and it was great. There was plenty of room and an infinite supply of utensils. The area is beautiful, tranquil and superbly placed for both the countryside and coast. A wonderful holiday was enjoyed by all. Thanks.

Summer holidays 2009

  • 4 out of 5
We spent 2 weeks at the Bastidon des Oliviers in July 2009. We went with another family and so this house was perfect as it allowed us to holiday together but to have our own space as well. The house (for which I mean both villa and apartment) was very well stocked down to the little things like salt, cooking oil, washing up liquid, tea towels etc. We found the owners very helpful and pleasant both before and during our stay. The detailed rental agreement did scare us somewhat but I'm assuming the owners have had a bad experience with guests in the past and so wanted to ensure that every eventuality was covered. The property was very clean and someone came to clean and change sheets/towels half way through the holiday as well.
Fans were provided in all bedrooms but we did find it very hot at nightime on the top floor . Any chance of putting in airconditioning in these 2 rooms?
The detailed information left by the owners was useful but geared more towards an older age group, giving information on the best restaurants and local art galleries etc. Perhaps you could provide more information on activities for families with (young) children?
The pool was fantastic. Often we just spent the whole day at the villa just enjoying the children playing in the pool. My one comment here, though, would be to suggest that the owners fit a small fence and gate to the side of the house leading to the pool. This really wouldn't take much (and we managed to block it off by using 3 sunloungers turned on their side) but would offer much better peace of mind to people with young children. I appreciate that there is a pool alarm but we didn't want to rely on this.
The location of the house was lovely and was close to some beautiful villages. We ate in Claviers a few times which was nice but the restaurant owner (waitress?) wasn't at all friendly to us - not sure if it was the number of children we had with us (5) or the fact we were English but we definitely got a chilly reception. Thankfully everyone else we encountered on holiday was very friendly and we had some lovely days out at the St Cassien Lake.
Our local shop was the Proxi at Bargemon which was very well stocked and only a few minutes away by car. Bit shocked by the price of everything though (£12 for 3 ice-creams!) but I guess that's the South of France and a poor exchange rate for you. Overall a great holiday which we would recommend to others.

Owner's Response: We appreciate this thoughtful review and would just like to give our response to some points raised.
We have tried to make the Rental agreement as thorough as possible to protect both parties. It means our customers can be certain our properties will be well maintained and any problems dealt with rapidly.
We don't have any current plans to install air conditioning as normally the night temperatures are pleasant and it is sufficient to open the windows (leaving the shutters closed if customers prefer). We will, however, be installing a gate between the house and pool so children cannot just wander there at will.
The owner of one of the Claviers restaurants is indeed unfriendly (seemingly to most people!) but we think it is just her manner. The people in the other restaurant are very friendly and there are lots of local restaurants to choose from. Equally the local shop in Bargemon is more expensive than the larger supermarkets but it is generally well stocked and very convenient.
Finally it is a fair comment about our information as it is based on our own experiences. We'll bear this in mind when we next update it. The local tourist offices do provide a good range of brochures with activities for all ages.

Bastidon des Oliviers 9th-16th May 2009 The Villa

  • 4 out of 5
My son and I had no problem locating the property and the precise directions given by the owners allowed us to arrive ahead of schedule from Nice Airport. We also took their advice and 'stocked up' at the LeClerc supermarket on the way.
Initially the property may seem remote, because the many trees shield the nearby properties and offer great privacy. If you are looking for a quiet location this is ideal. The large well equipped terrace has lovely distant views of the two nearby villages Claviers and Bergamon, and once the early morning sun has cleared the trees it is bathed in sunshine until sunset. At least it was when we were there. The pool, at the rear of the Villa, was clean, large and gave great views over the valley. It was also visually private. However, at that time of year, I decided the water was too cold for the elderly.
The Villa itself ? Very spacious, comfortably furnished and provided everything we needed. Mind you once I have found the corkscrew I relax. I cooked every evening and enjoyed working in the kitchen, everything I needed was there. It is easy to serve meals/ snacks both inside and outside from the kitchen.
The bedrooms were of good size, light and airy, the ground floor bathroom was large and a shower and toilet were also at this level. Upstairs the bedrooms enjoyed a private balcony giving views over the valley. Perhaps a shower at this level could be considered. At least there is a toilet and wash basin for the over indulged.
The position of this Villa gives good access to many areas. The close villages of Claviers and Bergamon are both worth a visit, the latter, being larger has several shops including a small but well stocked supermarket.
During our stay we visited the Gorges du Verdon, Grasse and its nearby gorge, Nice, Cannes, St Tropez and travelled the length of the coast road between Nice and St Tropez. At that time of year, away from weekends, the roads were not too busy, but in summer the road to St Tropez should be avoided, but not St Tropez. Take the ferry from Ste-Maxime, it's frequent and takes you into the harbour. Go rub shoulders with the famous or let them rub shoulders with you, watch them consume their lobsters and pink champagne on their yachts, there's always a burger bar behind you.
So yes. we enjoyed our holiday at Bastidon des Oliviers, it allowed us to visit many places, to see many things and was always a lovely place to return to in the evening, even if I did choose to cook the meals myself

that elusive feeling

  • 5 out of 5
How to be efusive yet avoid the usual phrases? Impossible I fear,- wonderful villa, magnificent setting, clean and well maintained facilities, and an unforgettable holiday enjoyed by three generations, and a chorus of 'please can we come back next year?' . But perhaps most importantly, the elusive feeling that for a short time it really was ours.

Bastidon des Oliviers is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, less than ten minutes walk from the splendid hilltop village of Claviers, near Bargemon (voted “one of the most beautiful villages in France”). The property is set amongst terraced olive groves in over an acre of land on a hillside with a spectacular infinity pool, enjoying glorious views over the surrounding countryside. A fabulous secluded location, yet within easy access of the Cote d’Azur resorts, which can be quickly reached via the A8 motorway (20 minutes away). It is a 45 minute drive to Cannes or to the Gorges du Verdon, 1 hour to Nice airport or St. Tropez and 35 minutes to the nearest beaches at Fréjus or St. Raphael.

Claviers is located in a beautiful area of The Var (the “département”), boasting some of the finest scenery Provence has to offer. There are numerous interesting nearby villages. Seillans and Bargemon have both been voted amongst the most attractive villages in France but in our view all the local villages are very attractive and worth a visit in their own right. Amongst the nearest are Callas, unspoilt and typical of the area; Fayence, the largest and busiest with a lovely viewpoint and famous gliding club; Callian, ancient and very pretty; St. Cezaire, perched on a cliff edge, and Mons, nestled in the hills, with superb views over the Gorges de la Siagne and the coast. And, if you prefer swimming in a lake or want to indulge in watersports or fishing, Lake St. Cassien is just a short drive away or you can visit the impressive Lac de Ste. Croix at the entrance to the Gorges du Verdon. Most outdoor activites are available locally including hiking, climbing, canyoning, golf, tennis, gliding, non-motorised watersports on the lake and most watersports at the coast.
