About Ruth and Brian

Ruth and Brian met and fell in love and married in 2006, and in 2007 we went to Armona Island and fell in love all over again. We have not seen anywhere that offers such an easy going lifestyle combined with so much sun and good food and beach!

We go to Armona four or five times a year, and enjoy meeting our friends (every visit we add a few more). Summer is very popular and always books quickly, but we really enjoy out of season.

Even in winter we sunbath in our lovely beach garden, which is very sheltered and acts as a sun trap.

Time on Armona goes at a very different pace - usually we find by the end of the day we have been to at least two of the beaches, walked to the ferry terminal and the Atlantic, and either stocked up at a local shop or visited Olhao to enjoy the shops and the market.

We have found the night sky in Armona is so clear, so even after the barbeque is dying down we like to stroll along the path, go visit friends, or just watch the very last hints of sunset, when the sky can change colours for hours before night really starts.

In the summer, you can find us at the Atlantic beach bar, dancing to the music and have a caipirinha or two under the stars.

By November we have prepared the house for Winter, all ready for another year of fun starting with visitors for Christmas and New Years.

Ruth and Brian purchased this villa in 2007

Why Ruth and Brian chose Armona Island

Our villa is right in the heart of Armona Island - easy access to the ferry terminal, the bars and restaurants, and just a few metres away are the beaches. Because we have 4 bedrooms, our villa is popular with families (2 couples with kids, or grandparents, parents, and grandchildren).

We looked at a lot of houses on Armona, but our villa was the only one which was truly dual aspect.

The first rays of the sun fall into the front terrace, so that is a great place for your first cup of tea or coffee. Half of the terrace is covered, so that is where we usually enjoy our lunch. Half our crowd love the sun, the other half don't, so our extra long table is perfect because we set it where everyone gets the sun or shade they need.

Afternoons, the sun lands on our beach garden. This enclosed sandy area is great for children all year (a lovely mimosa tree provides partial shade). We watch the sun go down here, and also eat lunch here in winter as it is the perfect sun trap.

Evening meals are back on the terrace - everyone is too tired to want any more sun for a few hours at least! The outdoor kitchen and barbeque means the whole family (families) can be together for the last meal of the day.

Finally, we have kept the best of Portuguese style and colour, but replaced the beds, and bought leather furniture for the dining chairs and living room. The beds all have lovely memory foam toppers, so we get a peaceful nights sleep, with a cooling fan in each bedroom and the main living area for when the Armona sun really has been working hard all day.

What makes this villa unique

Apart from the dual aspect (perfect mornings, perfect evenings) mentioned in Why This Property, we would love our guests to also know that:

Armona Island has one long main path, and our house is just a few blocks off the path. This makes the house quieter, as it sits between the laguna beach and the main path.

The nearest shop is just 40 metres away, next to the playground. They have just expanded the shop, and now sell fish and meat as well as beer, wine, fresh fruit and vegetables.

We provide clean bed linen and towels and a little welcome pack of coffee, tea, milk, water, toilet paper and soap, so you have time to go straight to the beach.

Our new inflatable kayak still seats two people, but is quicker and even easier to paddle. We provide life jackets for both children and adults.

If you love to cook, our kitchen is fully equipped. Many Portuguese families visit and make themselves at home, cooking delicious soups with fresh vegetables and local seafood.

If you don't like to cook, we can recommend restaurants at both sides of the Island. The Atlantic side boasts European style food, but taking advantage of the fresh local fish and vegetables.

The ferry terminal has Portuguese restaurants, with cataplana and many local delicacies. There is also a pizza restaurant with a rooftop terrace looking across the island to the mainland and other islands.

Finally, our house is looked after by a lovely team who meet and greet you, and who are always delighted to help and advise you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We arrived well at home from beautiful Armona island - it was a very relaxing week - exactly what we needed.

Amazing - we live so close to the island but yet - life is so different here.

Many thanks for letting us use your beautiful and very well equipped house - my favorite place was your "rocking bench" on the terrace. We will for sure be back as we sincerely loved it.

thanks again and all the best for you

Excellent facilities in a wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Armona. The villa is wonderful, situated right in the centre of the island, close to the little shop and children's play area, and only a few steps away from the laguna beach. The villa is extremely well equipped, very well maintained, and was lovely and clean, with two excellent bathrooms and plenty of hot water. The outside shower was a bonus to get all the sand off after the day at the beach, and the kayak was great fun on the sheltered lagoon. Being off the main path the villa was lovely and quiet in the evening and the outside rocker was very relaxing with a chilled glass of wine in the evening. The only noise in the morning was that of the quad bike, which signalled the delivery of the fresh bread and croissants to the local shop, and off we would go ( in pyjamas) to pick up our breakfast supplies. The booking process was easy and efficient and the customer service we received was excellent. Thank you for a great holiday and I would recommend this property without hesitation.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your great comments!! Not everyone can visit our house, so we try extra hard to make sure everyone's stay really is special. And many thanks for rebooking so quickly for next year!

Lovely spacious villa superbly well equipped.

The island and this villa are wonderful! By far the best equipped villa we have stayed in with vast amounts of space. The bbq area was lovely and most of the time at the villa, apart from when sleeping, was spent around this area . Both the Atlantic beach and the " Ferry" beach had lovely sand and were never crowded. The only drawback with the Atlantic beach was the hike to the loo. The inland lake was a favourite place, mostly secluded, and the area between the lake and the lagoon was like a desert island. I recommend Carlos' restaurant by the ferry and the sardines and clams were special. Antonios, the last place before the walkway to the Atlantic beach was poor and the service awful! A "must see" is the fish and vegetable market in Olhao, brimming with activity and a great place to get stuff for the Barbie. On one occasion we bought swordfish steaks that were so big, we could only get them on the Barbie two at a time!! The taste was fantastic. We will always have very fond memories of Vivenda Marinho and Armona . Go and enjoy!

Owner's Response: Thanks James, so glad you enjoyed Armona! The food is great, and this summer the beach bar is offering drink service right to the sunbeds :) Ruth and I will be there soon! I will pass your comments on to all restaurants mentioned, and hope to post a "how to create fantastic squid & cuttlefish" video soon. All the best, Ruth and Brian

Having worked far too hard for the preceding couple of months, a week on Armona proved the perfect antidote. In October the island is still just about awake - one or two bars/restaurants are still open, and there are passengers for each of the three ferries that each day make the short trip to and from the mainland. The small supermarket was not open, but this is no great hardship given that the ritual of making the 15 minute ferry ride to shop in Olhau is so enjoyable. There is great fish to be had in Olhau's fish market, and the Pingo supermarket is good.

Armona itself is small and low-lying, and no motor vehicles are allowed. Again, this is no hardship as a stroll along the main drag of the 'inhabited' part of the island is a joy. Cacti and succulents stud the gardens of the mostly whitewashed villas, and the scent is seductive at certain times of day. At this time of year it is impossible not to relax - sleeping, eating, wandering to the Atlantic beach, or just stepping out to one of the bars for a beer.

The villa itself is very comfortable, and nicely appointed. For me, highpoints were a shaded garden to the front framed by bourgainvillea; the outdoor barbecue; great showers and - perhaps more esoterically - a good feeling to the place. More prosaically, it was beautifully clean and we were given excellent instructions and support in finding it - even to the point of being met on our arrival in Olhau and a water taxi secured for our trip to the island.

I shall go back to Armona without a shadow of a doubt, and if it should be in Autumn again I would be perfectly happy. We enjoyed plenty of sunshine, and the experience was quite magical. This villa is a base from which to enjoy all of these things.

Owner's Response: Thanks Chris - spring is magical as well. Ruth and I are going out in March and hoping to bring some friends to experience the Armona magic, and to prepare the house for the guests to follow.

one of our best holidays ever!

We had such a great time in this beautiful Villa on Armona Island!

Thank you so much Ruth and Brian for sharing it with us.

We love to remember our relaxing beachholiday, peaceful long walks ,sunbathing, visits to Olhao market and the barbecues , living like the locals but with all the comfort you could wish for including wireless internet access ( mostly for our sons) If this is what you look for, book this place - i am sure you will love it as much as we did!

We will be back soon !

Owner's Response: Thanks Carola! One of our plans for 2013 is to create an Armona Island recipe book, so people can really experience all the great food that Portugal has to offer from the comfort of our beach house. As for the wireless Internet, I am glad you used it! Not many homes on Armona have broadband mobile Internet, but for people who want complete isolation they can of course just turn it off ;-)

Portugal's best kept secret

From the moment we were dropped off by the taxi at the harbor town of Olhao only a 15 minute ride from Faro Airport, we knew we were in for a holiday never to be forgotten. We were met at the ferry by the key holder (Pam) and whilst we sipped a quick coffee at the kiosk there, were given a quick explanation of the house. The ferry journey to the island was a 20 minute ride hugging the coastline and a fascinating tour of its many traditional fisheries, which operate at low tide along the short route. The island looked beautiful from the boat and once we actually arrived at the jetty and hopped off, we walked through the island center, which included a few restaurants, cafes and a small shop for your essentials. Then up a short pathway which lead us through a wonderful variation of properties from the small beach hut to the larger houses situated on this lovely small island.

Once we found the house and opened the shutters we found it to be plenty spacious and nicely furnished and decorated. The three double bedrooms were big enough for us and the kids bunk room worked perfectly for them too. The two bathrooms were clean and modern and we never seemed to run out of hot water for the 6 showers each night and morning! The kitchen was well equipped with pots, pans and the like and everything we needed was close to hand. To be honest we spent most of our time cooking on the outdoor barbecue, which was easy to light and gave everything that lovely holiday taste. As we were two families with kids holidaying together we never felt like we were on top of each other and there was plenty of space to accommodate all 6 of us in comfort. When the sun got to hot the kids would come indoors and watch a DVD or read and we would sit under the canopy of the outdoor area. On the island there is a small tidal lagoon which would fill up overnight and warm gently throughout the day. The kids loved it, as the majority of it is only knee/thigh deep with only the very center being much more than 6 feet in depth. The house came with a two man canoe and our boys spent many hours drifting around on the lagoon whilst we relaxed on the little beaches situated around it. The other end of the island has the Atlantic beach, where the water is a little colder and the waves fun to jump through but watch the current. All in all we had a great holiday in a great house on a beautiful and quiet island, just what we needed, highly recommended. Thanks Ruth and Brian.

Owner's Response: Many thanks Franck! A great review very much appreciated, and also a really great guide to the island too! We will put this onto our website so people get a better idea of a visit to Armona Island from the holidaymakers view.

Wonderful island for relaxing.

The villa was great, well equiped with loads of indoor and outdoor space. There were only 5 of us but I do think if 8 were staying one bathroom may prove a bit of a problem.

Super kayak for use on the lagoon, great beaches and very friendly locals. The villa had everything you could possibly need and we will be returning!

The villa was so great we barbequed there everynight and saved a fortune on eating out.

Owner's Response: Wow! it's 2014 now, and so much has changed! Thanks for your review back in 2009! We did add that extra bathroom with walk in shower, and have installed fans in every room as well. Next year is the "year of the dishwasher"! Thanks again for your review - we have been on homeaway for so long now and really enjoy visiting Armona ourselves every few months :)

Armona Island is all Beach ;-)
Car: not necessary

Armona Island is in the heart of the Algarve.

This barrier island is car free, with a scattering of holiday cottages and just enough bars and restaurants to enjoy the local Portuguese lifestyle.

Armona is also part National Park, a pristine natural environment, with over 9 kilometres of beach.

Please note the map places the house on the right island, but we are much nearer the sea. We are only a few houses back!

Activities on Armona include:

* Deciding which beach you want to go to (there are beaches to suit every mood).

* Meeting friends and locals in the bars (Ferry end, Atlantic end, and middle)

* Enjoy local Portuguese cuisine and European food 5 restaurants

* Stocking up on food/beer/wine or buying the children a bucket and spade at one of the island shops

* If you have a bucket and spade, the side and Atlantic beaches are great for clamming

* Snorkelling is popular, or dive off the Armona wharf (at your own risk of course)

* Go kayaking – our villa includes a two seater inflatable kayak (for local fun)

* Island cruises and kayak hire (for longer distance trips and kayaking)

* Just relaxing – the pace of life is sooo much slower

* Catching up – if you really do need Internet, our villa has a Wifi hotspot

Nearby Olhao (10 minutes by Ferry) has many restaurants and shops, café bars, a few clubs, and a lovely marina. The Real Marina hotel sports two swimming pools, a great restaurant, and can also be used for a 'two location' holiday without having to go anywhere else.

For food shopping, there are supermarkets and two 'must see' indoor local markets on the waterfront, one specialising in fresh fish and the other supplying local meat, cheese and vegetables.

The Algarve is famous for watersports including swimming, waterskiing, snorklling, sailing, and generally 'messing around in boats'.

The Olhao ferry terminal connects to the other local islands as well as Armona, or for a few euros more splash out on a Water Taxi. Farol, Cullatra, and Deserta islands are just a short ride away.

Olhao is a major city, and has most amenities. You can also catch a bus to Faro, or a train to Faro, Lisbon, and even Seville.

Surrounding Olhao and Faro are numerous golf courses, and for those who can prise themselves away from Armona the whole Algarve is there to be explored.
