Half term in Pembrokeshire

  • 5 out of 5
We had the most fantastic week staying at the Old Rectory and Retreat. The house was brilliantly situated and well equipped. Newport the local village was just great - delicious restaurants, great pubs and shops; especially the butcher!... You could get everything you need there although Fishguard had a Tesco. Loads to do and stunning beaches close by especially Traith (you can see it from the house). Thoroughly recommend staying here - terrific value and nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

Owner's Response: After 14 years of offering my treasured Old Rectory and Retreat Cottage as a holiday destination it always fills me with joy to read the guest book and witness so many happy people having such a wonderful time in this precious place. All the regulars that have come back over a 10 year period notice the improvements each year and love this place as their home.
As a team we wish to give the best service and we seem to attract such great people such as this family. Sharing this beloved coastline, area, town and house is such a rewarding adventure.
It is only found by a discerning few. Indeed there are more coves, beaches and mountain paths than places to stay. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park will keep it that way.
We invite all new and returning guests to a warm welcome at our Old Rectory and Retreat Cottage that can accommodate a luxury Cottage for 2 or up to 14 in the Rectory, or larger group up to 18 in both properties.
Please email or call anytime for us to help you have a great time. Deanna, Colin and Gillie

Lovely house in fantastic location

  • 5 out of 5
We came here as a family - 7 adults, plus 8 yr old and 1 yr old, for a family anniversary.
The house was lovely with plenty of space and facilities for a large family group. The views in all directions are to die for. The garden is beautiful, great for children and very peaceful for adults. We had hoped to eat outside on the slate table and enjoy the views but sadly we were their before the summer actually arrived. Even though it was not sunny the weather was good enough for us to get out and about. We know the area well and came prepared for all types of weather! We enjoyed walking on the mountain behind the house, Carn Ingli, and the children loved playing on the beach and paddling.
My son ordered meat for a special meal from the local butcher in Newport and it was excellent.
We were particularly grateful to the local property manager. It was easy to contact her and get help/advice for small things and she was particularly helpful when one of our group was unwell and we were not sure whether we would be able to leave on time.
We wanted to stay in the Newport area and looked hard for a property which met our needs. The Rectory lived up to all our expectations.

An Amazing property in a magical place!

  • 5 out of 5
Our three generations (amounting to 21) had a glorious week at the Old Rectory and adjoining Cottage. We understand Deanna is an Architect and it shows! So many thoughtful and aesthetic touches. We really felt at home and with the large Welsh garden well, what could be better. We loved her website for the property www.go-wales.com. It is a beautiful site and informative and after our stay, proved to be accurate. For those who don't know Newport/Pembrokeshire, it is regarded one of the most special travel destinations in all of Wales. Look carefully at the website and especially the video because this is how it really is. Our family connected in ways rarely afforded us for this week. Thank you Deanna. Now we understand how you have had families coming year after year. We too will be back!

Owner's Response: Thank you for coming and sharing your experience with others.
Increasingly we have large interest groups and family reunions that use both properties. We also have responded by making it easier and more friendly for large groups to gather together.
Groups like having the whole acre of property to themselves with no neighbours except a few cows at times. We have a large elm table in The Old Rectory that sits 16 with 5 more in the adjoining kitchen area. To support this we have a generous supply of cooking equipment, a range, an Aga and 3 fridge freezers. There are over 21 place settings in the old Rectory so nobody has to move things between the properties.
So glad that you noticed extra aesthetic touches. It will be a pleasure to have you return.

Wild and Magical

  • 5 out of 5
Wow! This has been such a great escape for us. To get out of the city into this incredible wild landscape. We were really able to get calm here and take a breather from it all.
We adventured during the day, and spent evenings around the woodstove in your cosy inglenook. Walking along the cliffs just down the road was so invigorating. The coast path just keeps going. The ever changing lanscape, the sun and blustery wind. Everything is so wild here. The woods just up from your house are incredible too. There is a real sense of magic there. So many bluebells, little winding trees, and bubbling strems. im sure that there must be some elves living there. You have done an amazing job of preserving the charachter of this new place, but accommadating our modern needs. i can see why the national tourist board awarded you 4 stars. You have provided everything we need and more, at higher standards than we could have expected, but it has been so much more than that. It has been a real taste of the wild, and an escape to the magical. Thank You! We WILL be back.

Owner's Response: Thank you Susan for coming and appreciating the wild and magical nature of it all in that house and in that location. Yes, there are elves and fairies galore!. It is a very happy place steeped in myth, legend and tradition. Dylan Thomas had a lot of inspiration in these parts and many other writers and artists. It is very helpful for myself and other visitors to see your review, thank you for writing. Welcome back again. Deanna

Pembrokeshire is a place of magic, mystery & enchantment with wild landscapes, imbued with five-thousand years of deeply layered history and culture. From the Neolithics through to Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table, our area was of great spiritual significance to its early inhabitants, and an abundance of ancient monuments, relics, and sacred sites still surround us today.

A web of public footpaths take you right from our doorstep through incredible and varied landscapes. Explore fairy-tale wooded valleys, heather-clad open moorlands, the charged Bluestone outcrops of Carn-Ingli (Angel Mountain*), Newport's* Mile-long beach, and the wild windswept clifftops of the renowned Pembrokeshire coast path.

The medieval town of Newport remains in another era. The Norman church and castle stand proudly over the tightly winding streets, with family run shops and gnarly old pubs still bustling with true welsh charm.

Other Activities: The 180 mile long Pembrokeshire Coast Path offers superb hiking in pristine landscape.
