Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday apartment in Villefranche-sur-Mer - L'Artistes Tresor

Old town apartment near the beach, 2 beds, big terrace and view over the sea .

'Artistes Tresor' is a beautiful apartment in the heart of the old town with a large terrace and breathtaking sea view over the whole bay of Villefranche Sur Mer. Being in the best location in town makes it the perfect setting for a wonderful holiday. Enter the doorway of the house built in the 16th century and be uplifted by the view that is truly unforgettable. The local agent described the apartment, renovated by the artist owner, as 'giving the feeling of being in another poetic world'. Our guests return time and time again. Discover all that VIllefranche has to offer moments away. Great restaurants, the beach and sea a few minutes walk away and the village full of history and charm. The local shops are on the doorstep. With its micro-climate it is perfect here all year round. Without doubt this is one of the worlds most romantic and beautiful locations, within easy access of Nice airport. This is an old village apartment designed for comfort for all the family. Join us soon!

All Year Round: The location is perfect for a holiday any time of the year as the area has so much to offer and Villefranche benefits from a micro climate. Rue Obscure, which is one of the oldest streets in France runs under the apartment and is unchanged since the 14th century. Villefranche is the most charming and authentic town on the Cote d’Azur, nestled on the spectacular shores of the Bay of Villefranche, yet just minutes from Nice and Monaco. Still a genuine French fishing village with a wonderful local culture — yet also attracting a very interesting international group of visitors and residents, including students that attend the renowned French language institute called the Institut Français. This is a wonderful area for walkers with the coastal paths and the hills close by. For example there is a superb walk around Cap Ferrat (about eight miles). The American sixth fleet were stationed here during the second world war.

Villas and Gardens to visit: The unique micro climate has facilitated the development of world renowned gardens which are open to the public such as Villa & Jardin Ephrussi de Rothschild on Cap Ferrat, and Villa & Jardin Kerylos in Beaulieu sur Mer, both within walking distance. There are additional renowned gardens in the area of Menton.

Jean Cocteau Chapel and the Citadel: Jean Cocteau painted the interior of this most beautiful chapel on the waterfront. It has been recently restored to its former glory. Ville franche is a village full of art and artists.

Visit the ramparts of the Citadel and take the guided tour into the Sculpture Gallery and through the cobbled street of the old towns history. Visit the tourist office for details.

About Mattie Silman

I found myself in Villefranche in 2002 for the first time. I was enchanted from the outset and saw my apartment on the same day I arrived. I decided to sell my house in London to buy it and knew that I would have to share it from time to time in order to pay for this expensive impulse......It is the best thing I have ever done. I hope you love it as much as I do!

Mattie Silman purchased this apartment in 2003

Why Mattie Silman chose Villefranche-sur-Mer

I realised that the location and view of the sea was priceless. The uniqueness of the location and the age of the building is something that can't be replaced - it has evolved over hundreds of years. It truly is the best location in the South of France. It still retains it's charm due to the fact there are no big hotels around and about.

What makes this apartment unique

Being in a village is lovely with the sea a short walk away. It has everything. Restaurants, gorgeous walks, easy transport. I love to sit on my terrace watching the activity in the bay. The beautiful morning skies as the sun rises which you can see on my website. Watching the moon go down over Cap Ferrat. This is my great pleasure and relaxation in life. Sharing this with my guests keeps it all going.......

Guestbook comments from the manager

23rd July to the 30th July 2006

Just to let you know we had a fantastic time in Villefranche the best holiday we have had in a long time. The apartment and location was just superb and we would love to return next year. We went to Italy, Monte Carlo and obviously Nice. So if you could let me know what dates are available for next July that would be great. I really can’t say enough about the area and scenery. The children loved the beach and we just loved the history and the ability to travel so easy once there. So thanks again for all your help and for letting us stay at your beautiful apartment.

Best Regards, Richard Caul.

We had a wonderful time made all the memorable by your beautifully appointed apartment. It was fantastic, the apartment was very spacious for a family of five and well equipped. It was like a home away from home, and given our stay was over winter the apartment was very warm. The view from the living room and balcony was unforgettable. We spent many mornings having breakfast on the balcony, and made sure we we up early to see the amazing sunrises.

The location was so convenient surrounded by some lovely restaurants, a convenience shop on our doorstep, a lovely beach we were fortunate enough to have a memorable picnic on in the middle of winter, and the train station, our quick and easy link to Nice, Monte Carlo and Cannes being just a short walk away from the apartment. It was simply perfect.

I would also like to thank Heidi for her warm welcome and information that help us navigate the town and the apartment with ease, and to Sue for organising the airport transfers.

This is a beautiful apartment that we will be recommending to all our friends, we hope to have the opportunity to visit and stay in your apartment again. Many thanks Mattie for maintaining and sharing such a quality apartment.

Great property, perfect location

  • 5 of 5

Hi Mattie

Sorry I have been meaning to get back to you. We absolutely loved your apartment, it was just fantastic and the location superb. Most mornings we ran Cap Ferrat – a great start to the day. We spent a lot of time exploring by foot and walked into Eze one day. Trips to Nice, Montecarlo and Portofino were nice but we all loved coming back to Villefranche. Afternoons were spent by the beach and evenings wandering around town and trying out all the fabulous restaurants.

My 11 year old son had been learning French at school so he enjoyed walking down to the bakery and ordering. The butcher also gave him lollies when he ordered in French which was lovely.

One of our lasting memories will be the wonderful smells coming up onto the balcony from the restaurants below. We had the most amazing lamb shanks from the restaurant downstairs and had to go back a second night. The owner was surprised that people from New Zealand would be so keen on his lamb! Would love that recipe if he was ever to share it!

Kind regards/Carlene

P.S. Sue met us and spent time at the apartment with us advising how things worked and where to get things which was great.

Magical and Enchanting

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in the Old Town of Villefranche-sur-mer was a dreamy and enchanting experience, framed by the beautiful terrace of the apartment that captured the beauty during our stay. The apartment is clean, bright and comfortable; it invites you in and promises to make it very difficult to leave! While it is walking distance to Cap Ferrat and a 10 min train ride to Nice, we didn't want to leave the apartment which provided a relaxing atmosphere along with a stunning view of the bay of Villefranche. There are a number of nice restaurants in the village, and we cooked a number of meals and enjoyed them on the terrace under the full moon. Everything you need is provided for in the apartment, from comfort to utility and we are so grateful that our first stay in Villefranche was met with exquisite hospitality from Mattie and impeccable accommodations. We look forward to our return!

Owner's Response: Wonderful and we look forward to welcoming more guests in the future........ I have to say that October continues to be a magical month. Whilst other parts of the world are beginning winter Villefranche enjoys amazing sunny days with a full beach and the Mediterranean still warm enough for swimming. We are so fortunate with the micro climate down here. Thank you to all the lovely guests this year and hope to see more of you very soon, Mattie

beautiful town apartment hot and noisy in July

  • 3 of 5

I read many reviews before I booked this apartment so I was a bit surprised at not hearing about some of the draw backs we experienced. We just returned from a week's stay here and the town of Villefranche is well worth a visit. The apartment is located in the heart of the old section of this beautiful town and very well situated for the beach and the restaurants which we enjoyed! However there are some negatives about this apartment that should be considered if you are staying in July or when it is hot. There is no air conditioning in the back two bedrooms which are the main bedrooms in the apartment. This is also not the area of the apartment overlooking the water so there is no breeze and our room was quite hot despite the over head fan. We kept the windows open at night but it was quite noisy due to the street noise especially in the early morning hours and we had disrupted sleep as a result.

Other things we were disappointed about were not as major but worth describing. The owner delegates all contact to the property manager Sue who arranged to meet us to check in and out and she was available to do that. However don't expect any other supports, for example, she told us not to contact her during the week except for an emergency repair and she did not check in with us at all during our stay. Before we left the US I knew we were arriving early in the day before our room was available so I emailed her asking for options to arrange to check our luggage either at a train station in Nice or anywhere in Villefranche since otherwise we would be waiting all day for checking in. Sue was not helpful at all about problem-solving around this except to have us wait at a restaurant all morning for her. I also asked for advice about the trains and suggestions for rail passes for the week since we were going to use the train to go to Marseille and to make local day trips. I understand she is not a travel agent but I felt she could have done more than simply say she had no information about train passes. Also despite what others have said about items being left for others to use while that is true we had to purchase our own toilet paper and paper towels as there was one roll of each when we arrived. Finally there was some confusion with Mattie about paying in British pounds versus Euros as the emails I had with Mattie when booking had instructions to pay locally in Euros and when I arrived Sue expected the balance of the payment to be made in British pounds.

Owner's Response: I was very upset to read this review and hope that future prospective guests will read my other reviews before making a judgment. Our check in time is 4pm and the check out is 10am as published. We need time to prepare the apartment up to the high standard we offer. In all cases we try to accommodate our guests as we did in this case. These guests were on an early flight so Sue managed to organise getting them settled in at midday. This required them to wait in a local restaurant until she could get there. This early check in is quite a feat during high season. Unfortunately this does not seem to be appreciated by our guest. I appreciate that they were most likely jet lagged and tired. However, we made a huge effort to help and to get the cleaner early and settle them in as early as possible. Once in the apartment Sue ran through the details explaining everything the guest would need during their stay. She also asked the cleaner to turn off the vacuum cleaner so she could be heard whilst looking and showing them maps of the area. We are sorry but train passes are not something we know about…… I have asked Sue about the toilet rolls and she said that there were two in each bathroom and a roll of kitchen paper which is the normal amount we supply. We leave a generous supply so guests do not need to go shopping for basic items. However, as we are a self catering apartment we do not leave an endless supply of paper. We have air conditioning in the main part of the apartment and the terrace side bedroom. This is a protected village so it is not possible to put air con in the back bedrooms on the village side. However, I have never had a complaint about this before. This guest did not mention that there are excellent ceiling fans in those rooms. I installed new and more efficient ones this year. If the guest had contacted me I could have offered them some extra fans kept in store but unfortunately the guest did not contact me during their stay and I did not find out about these issues until this review was published. I take every complaint or issue a guest may have very seriously I would have bent over backwards in an effort to resolve them. As far as the issue with money was concerned I made it clear very many times that the amount was to be paid in sterling. As I said I hope that you will read the other reviews published here in order to make up your own mind. Thank you and I look forward to welcoming you.

Just a quick note to say thank you to Mattie, we rented the apartment in April, weather was fab and the apartment is a home from home, you literally have to turn up with you're clothes and nothing else (well some money would help). The appartment was spotless, There are DVDs washing machine tumble dryer etc etc. The view from the apartment is magical,we are familiar with the area but have not actually stayed in villfranche so we really enjoyed much more of the old town, meters from the entrance are bars restaurants bakers etc. The other great advantage is you don't need a car, the train station is only a 5 minute walk and from there you can explore nice Monaco Italy etc, the fares are very reasonable. I would also like to thank sue who is Mattie property manager, she was very helpful and even arranged a taxi for our departure at a reduced rate.

If the south of France is you're kind of place this is a little gem.

See you next year.

Owner's Response: Great to have up to date reviews from a new season to encourage new guests to come to Artistes Tresor. It's as special as ever and we look forward to seeing you soon! We are delighted when we get good feedback that echos all the things we love about this wonderful area! Mattie

Wonderful stay in Villefranche apartment!

  • 4 of 5

We spent a week in Villefranche staying in this beautiful apartment for a family holiday of 6 adults. All was as expected and it was a lovely quiet retreat at the end of a busy day sightseeing. Breakfast on the balcony overlooking the bay was a great way to start the day and a variety of fabulous restaurants almost on the doorstep made evening dining easy! Good support form local manager, arranging transport and advising on trips and restaurants. Easy travel around area by train or bus, even better on foot around Cap Ferrat or the footpath to Eze.

We will be back.

Car: not necessary

Villefranche is situated 4km from Nice Centre and 7km from Nice International airport. A well kept secret as it retains it's charm due to lack of major hotels nearby. You can happily spend all your time in the Village discovering it's wonderful history and why artists such as Jean Cocteau and Sommerset Maughan loved this area so much. In the 60's the music of the Rolling Stones could be heard across the bay from their villa on Cap Ferrat. Yet the village still retains it's authentic feeling. If you do wish to venture forth, the train which is 7 mins away runs all along the coast. Nice or Monaco are ten mins away or you can be in Italy (Ventimiglia) in 40 mins. The village of Eze is 20 mins by car or St Paul de Vence, Cannes and Antibes about 40 mins. A car is not essential and the walks here are fabulous. There is parking nearby. This is the best location on this fabulous coast by far. The French language Institute, Institut Francais, is a 10 minute walk away.

Other Activities: the area is full of art and history.

Ski: One and a half hours and you can be in the mountain snows if you love skiing in the winter.
