St Savinien some 6 kilometres away is a small picturesque town on the banks of the Charente river with restaurants and bars as well as a supermarket and a variety of shops

Area.: The Charente-Maritime has approximately 2600 hours of sunshine a year. This compares with about 1600 hours of sunshine in Northern France. This area, in number of hours sunshine, is second only to the Riviera.

La Rochelle, for example, some 45 minutes drive away has everything you want for an interesting day out- sandy beaches, beautiful islands, historic architecture, vibrant restaurants and one of the greatest aquariums in Europe.

The Charente-Maritime is famous for its seafood. 50% of France's national consumption of Oysters is farmed in the region. Cognac, Pineau de Charente, Charentaise Butter, Melons(in season), and many cheeses are among the regions specialities.

The beautiful Charente river, some 4 km away, winds its way from beyond Angouleme through Cognac, Saintes and St Savinien and out to sea via Rochefort. The river was the main route, in days gone by, that Cognac was exported to the rest of the world. Now it provides wild life in abundance, fishing and boating with boats for hire at St Savinien and Port d'Envaux.

The clear night skies are ideal for stargazing and being in the countryside reduces the effect of light pollution

The historic towns of Saintes and St Jean d'Angely are 20 minutes away by car with Cognac 30 minutes further on.

The Charente River with its wonderful scenery and water activities is less than 3 miles away.

The famous Oyster beds can be reached within 30 minutes.

The Chateau at Roche-Courbon and the caves at Crazannes are within walking distance.

There are many Romanesque churches in the area within easy reach.

The old cosmopolitan town of La Rochelle, steeped in nautical history, with its many cafes, restaurants, and aquarium is reached in 40 minutes as are the charming isles of Ile de Re,Oleron and Aix.

Bordeaux vineyards are 1 hours drive while the centre of Bordeaux a further 30 minutes on.

Futuroscope near Poitiers is 2 hours drive from the house.

Rochefort.

Visit the Corderie Royal ( Rope Factory) and the Hermoine boatyard where they are building a replica of the vessel that once sailed between Boston and Rochefort in 1780.

Further afield.

Bordeaux 90 minutes drive offers a full day out sightseeing. Leave the car on the outskirts and use the excellent tram system for cheap travel to and from the city.

23-30 September 2008

A superb location, a beautifully decorated gite which you immediately feel at home in, our week-long stay was really great.Hazel and David were extremely friendly, the little hamlet is a lovely place to stay and within close reach of Ile d'Oleron beaches, Ile de Re, Saintes, Cognac, Rochefort, la Rochelle... so much to see and do, lots of culture on your doorstep from fortified villages like Bruage and Talmont to l'Hermione, a reconstructed frigate in Rochefort, watching kite surfing on Ile d'Oleron and lots of supping local seafood at 'La Cayenne' next to the oyster beds. This area has so much to offer and we would love to come back again! Last week in September 2008 and we had glorious bright weather almost all week, cold mornings but by lunchtime, hot enough to sunbathe and swim in the Atlantic! Book a gite here and you won't be disappointed. Katie and Paul

A welcome rest

  • 4 out of 5
We arrived to a very warm welcome from David and Hazel and settled very quickly to the cottage - it is compact - but well arranged. The cottage is off the beaten track and, yes, a car is very necessary! The area was welcomely quiet and you could spend fabulously sunny days just by the pool reading resting and dipping but there are probably more excursions than we explored. We found Ile D'Oleron an accessible seaside outing and had a couple of lovely lunches and beach days there. La Rochelle is a great town and good shopping as well as convivial atmosphere. Beware of trying to eat out in St Savinien, the nearest town which is really picturesque, but doesn't have much in the way of choice.
There was a lot of information in the cottage folder, some of it quite old, some good and we added to the pile!
We would recommend this cottage for a real getaway from the world - no TV/UK Radio etc and a chance to enjoy real French countryside. Thanks for the memories!

A relaxing location with excellent facilities, the pool is ideal for hot sunny days, and the coast is not too far by car. Ideal if you want a quiet rustic location. A car is essential but everything you need within a 5 min drive.
David and Hazel are excellent hosts and a have a great deal of knowledge and information on the surrounding area.
Have recommended it to all we know.

Cycle Routes, Coastline and Pineau-Charente

  • 5 out of 5
A lovely, quiet, rural location and a charming property. The owners were very welcoming, though we felt we had the place to ourselves - a perfect balance. They were also very flexible with dates and were generous in the rate they gave us for our stay.

Loads of local cycle routes and coastline within easy reach. A great Christmas escape and we really fell for the local Pineau-Charente.
